Yes, They are much louder with the shorter barrel as well as a lot more flash.

Well I don't know much about the AR side of it but in the AK the barrel length is relatively irrelevant. You get nearly the same ballistics at useful ranges no matter what barrel length as long as you stay with the x39. That being said I prefer nothing shorter than 10". Main reason is getting useful furniture below that length is a custom made project. There are a variety now of furniture, gas tubes, sights, ect that are designed around the "krink" and AKM (Draco/AK). I personally don't care for 5.56 or 5.45 in the shorter lengths because it really affects the ballistics once you get below 14" or so.

Tighten barrel nut with no vise?
Smith replied to TNMTBik3r's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
I've done it with by holding it between my knees as a vise using towels as pads and by standing on it and tightening it. Both of which I do not recommend unless you just have to have it done now. ;) Find a vice and do it right. -
Updated :: Mini Draco Install / Keymod Rail and SB15 Mounted
Smith replied to plank white's topic in Show and Tell
I'm not a fan of the mini's but that looks really nice. BTW - never buy anything direct from ACE. Carolina Shooters Supply, Bonesteel, and CNC Warrior are the only places I buy from anymore. -
Pops us right. The black finish us not the Tennifer. Tennifer is a salt nitride bath that impregnated the steel down below the surface. Even if you took all the black finish off the Tennifer world remain. Unless you actually remove metal down to an unsafe level you wouldn't effect the Tennifer. Cerakoting a Glock our any other Tennifer/Melonited gun simply adds an improved finish (over factory finish) to the treated components. BTW -Tennifer/Melonite has no color.

I can't say enough good things about the PPQ. Same size as the G19 with far better ergonomics and the best trigger in a DA striker fired gun I've ever felt. Even with other guns trigger jobs the PPQ is better IMO. As far as carry, the love I have for the PPQ has me looking at the Walther CCP. The CCP employs a recoil system much like the P7.

I think your spell check changed "reliable" to "rattle". Silly computers. ;)

Here the AR guys go trying to make their AR's like an AK again! Looks like a Saiga!

The true genius of Obama is that here many of his opponents sit still blaming, vilifying, and analyzing Bush as the source of all Obama's faults. He just may actually be the devil incarnate ;-) Every president inherits a unique world and I don't hold them responsible for what they inherit. However, they should be responsible for the decisions they make in response to that world.

Who has a bonesteel or stormwerkz folder?
Smith replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I have had quite a few Ace stocks and currently have a Bonesteel on my Vepr. The Bonesteel is far better than the Ace. It locks up nicer, tighter, and has a thinner profile. The Ace is very good and I have two of them currently on various AK's. I do like that they are shorter in OAL but will get a bit of wobble when they aren't tucked into the shoulder. I've never had any issues with the Ace stocks and wouldn't hesitate to use them, but the Bonesteel is a better setup all around. Tighter and more solid, but I do like the versatility of the Ace setup and ATM it has more stock options. Bonesteel is working on interchangeable stock options that will be nice, but not as adaptable as the Ace IMO. -
Well, I guess the irony is that I'm now a non-conformist/rebel. I refuse to get a tattoo or piercing simply because everyone seems to have them and it is the "in" thing to do. I figure anything I do to try to fit in with some culturally relevant issue or fad is controlling me and expressing a cultural message as opposed to expressing my individuality or will. I really feel for the guys (or gals) who got them to be non-conformist and have now been nearly negated by the culture they were trying to differentiate themselves from. I guess the age old principle of letting who you are be represented by your character and name is still the most true individualistic expression one can display.

any ak builders in Knoxville Morristown area?
Smith replied to csc8569's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Don't know of local guys that can personally walk you through but if Troy at InRange is taking work again, he can't be beat. Here are a couple links to jigs and tools you can use to do your own. Robert Forbus is local here in Nashville and you can get him on the phone and he will be a world of help. Essentially all you need in addition to the jigs is a 12 ton press (or better). Even a cheap one from Harbor Freight, a bolt cutter (for rivets), and welding set-up. http://ak-builder.com/ http://www.tothtool.com/ http://robertforbus.com/Kalashnikova_Tools.htm http://akbuildingtools.com/ Also AK builder has some helpful links than can walk you through most of it. ie http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=pages.view&page_id=13 -
I've always loved the look of the Rhineland wood. Made me want to get another gun just to have one of the SVD stocks. Very Nice!

Can anyone refer me to an HONEST mechanic near me in Donelson
Smith replied to BLACKVANDRIVER's topic in General Chat
Yeah, Car Doctor. He just did some work for me. Great guy and he's fair. You'll recognize him. He used to come in D&T when you worked there. -
Custom AK-74 Built by Bret of N.E.G. (Never Enough Guns)
Smith replied to Fitty%'s topic in General Chat
No. It's not magnified so it doesn't affect sight picture. The benefit is that you get a wider field of view because the optic body is not so close it blocks out the side field of view as much. The drawback is that it puts a little more weight out front and AK's tend to be a bit front heavy as is. -
Will Hayden (Sons of Guns) arrested for child molestaion "allegedly"
Smith replied to Lumber_Jack's topic in General Chat
It's all from the same original charge. The ex-girlfriend lost in a custody battle and this followed shortly after. After the first CPS charge went nowhere she filed again on the same charge with another department. The Marshall's were called due to the possibility of automatic weapons being on him. They also say the daughter is very upset and wants nothing to do with the mother. According to people who are close to the situation. -
I've got another one. You guys really should just switch to AK's and not worry about "spare parts"! :) PM me.

Love them. If I ever get any more AR's it's the only stock I'll run. Too simple to use anything else.

They are built in Radom Poland but not in the famed Radom plant. These are fine AK's once you get past the IO connection, built using polish AK specs but not polish military AK parts.
I believe this has some validity, but here is the deal. Unions destroyed the big 3 automakers, and the fact the reliability across the board couldn't compete with Toyota, Nissan, Honda. Also Chrysler and GM lost a lot of people when they stepped in the bed with the govt in regards to the bailout money, and the govt sold GM back to itself for pennies on the dollar compared to the tax dollars used to bail them out, and the fact a lot of people aren't comfortable with GM vehicles due to OnStar and the fact the govt. can have your vehicle disabled with a phone call. It was done in a high speed chase not long ago in Nashville with a new Camaro. Secondly, gun shops typically purchase from the same wholesalers that Wal-Mart, Cabellas, Bass Pro, etc. purchase from. Some retailers like BassPro, Cabellas, Gander Mountain are higher than your LGS, whereas Academy is typically cheaper. Money is tight now, and if Bud's can sell a Ruger P95 for 300.00 delivered, so should Guns and Leather, D&T, Nashville Armory, etc. I had a friend who was a LEO that had his FFL and sold out of his home and online. I got to see his Jerry's Sports Center wholesale catalog and seen how much markup are in guns. For example at the time a Taurus 85 at a LGS was running 269-329.99, it cost him to get one 177.65 new, blued. He sold them online for 249.00 as fast as he could get them. Now 100.00 don't seem like a lot of markup, but multiply that across multiple firearms, and the markup on the high dollar stuff was even greater, you could make a nice penny. Places like Buds is volume based sales, so that is why they don't have the markup as much. not to mention they have a huge store and LEO sales division, and large range. I just posted myself asking what happened to Academy of Self Protection in Joelton, and there is a sign in the window that says "RIP Academy of Self Protection, has the years they were open and says at the bottom gone due to the price point shopper". I take they are referencing people buying from Buds, KY Gun Company and others. The gun shops need to be more competitive in pricing, and be more than willing to match Buds and others prices or at least come within the transfer fee price calculated in, and a lot of LGS are not willing to do that.
Most can match price, but they can't match state sales tax. In TN that is huge. 9.25% is typically close to the profit margin, so they end up not making money absorbing an additional 9.25% in the cost, even with shipping and transfer. Internet sales tax would even the field and keep far more LGS in business as pointed out by Joelton's sign.
I've had dealers tell them the make and model over the phone when they call it in. Whoever they talk to might not type it in during the check on their end but it still sounds odd at the time.
That's because they run two separate checks that are not tied together except on the 4473 itself. The nics check runs one check on the buyer and a seperate check on the gun to verify it is not stolen or otherwise in the database for recovery. This is why they call the manufacturer, then distributor, then the dealer when they recover a criminally used gun to identify the original buyer. They don't know otherwise.

Middle class can not be defined because middle class is not a stagnate destination. The middle class is where people are in flux as they move between the bottom and top of the economic fields. You are in the middle class if you are working to move from a lower economic level to a higher level.
