Tennessee gun free dining site works both ways:
wtl replied to Randall53's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
For some odd reason, @GunFreeDining just retweeted my tweet to them, as if they don't understand I was dissing them. Or, maybe they're wearing it as a badge of honor? Funny they haven't retweeted any other negative responses. -

Everyone should post to Facebook, Twitter etc thanking them for providing a convenient online database of eateries to avoid patronizing. If you see a fav restaurant on the list you should contact them and let them know because they were listed you won't be eating there. It really shouldn't take much effort to get restauranteurs to start harassing the site owners to remove their info. -

Feasibility of new FFL business in Gallatin / Hartsville / Lebanon area
wtl replied to wtl's topic in General Chat
It might be me, but $20 doesn't seem like a low fee.
Really? I've paid $30 and have seen people say they'd be glad to do business with shops charging $25. Other than anecdotally I haven't seriously researched transfer fees in this area yet. What do you pay? -
Imagine if they phrased in the other way around "50% of TN highway fatalities wearing seatbelts". It makes a completely different statement.
-
Ah, good point--makes much more sense if it's a rolling YTD comparison for both years as of the current point in the year. And the changing numbers for the previous year made me wonder the same thing about someone in an accident one year but not actually dying until the next.

I pass these digital signs along Vietnam Vets and i-65 once or twice a week. During rush hour they show traffic conditions, but most of the time they're showing something about highway death statistics. When I lived in Williamson county I didn't get up north much and didn't see them, but since moving to Castalian Springs I see them more frequently. While I was running back and forth prepping for the move in late 2013, the signs were showing total TN fatalities for 2012 and year to date for 2013. I think the first time I noticed them the death toll for 2012 (the prior year) was in the high 800's, like 880+ or somewhere around there. However, one day as I was driving, I actually saw the number jump up to 901 as I was driving by the sign. How in the world can the death toll for 2012 change in late 2013? Is this just inefficient government never having the real numbers timely, or what? Lately I've noticed the signs reporting the percentage of deaths where seatbelts were not worn. On a monday a couple weeks ago, as I passed the sign on Vietnam Veterans' Parkway, it reported 49% of TN high fatalities weren't wearing seatbelts. By the time I got to the next one on I-65 it was 50%. Two days later it was 51%. People must be dropping like flies! I guess if you really think about it though, if there are somewhere around 900 fatalities/year, then we're over 200 by now, so only ~2 deaths required to swing the percentage by a point. I just wonder about the bureaucracy behind these signs and the data they present. Doing a quick search it would seem the data comes from the department of safety and homeland security.

Feasibility of new FFL business in Gallatin / Hartsville / Lebanon area
wtl replied to wtl's topic in General Chat
Thanks for all the feedback! It won't need to be profitable anytime in the next few years--just looking for a good second business that might work in this location and create a tax advantage. There really isn't much that can be done in this location business-wise but I figured if I can attract some folks with low transfer fees and provide a personal touch, it might at least be a good way to meet local gun enthusiasts and folks looking to get into CCW. The HCP training could be iffy I agree--I've seen a sign at one of the Gallatin shops offering free HCP classes (I'm guessing it's with the purchase of a firearm?). But, if there is a lack of HCP classes in Hartsville and on into Trousdale county, that could be advantageous. At any rate I appreciate the responses and will continue my research... -
I'm looking for feedback from folks in my area about whether or not a FFL in Castalian Springs on Hartsville Pike (Hwy 25) between Gallatin and Hartsville Pike would be of any use to you. This would NOT be a gun store. I would do transfers at maybe $20, special orders if I can be competitive with local shops, and maybe the occasional bulk order of items in high demand to resell at attractive pricing locally or on gunbroker.com. If you were interested in a particular item you could contact me and I would see how inexpensively I could get it for you. Or if you had a used item I could try to find a buyer for you, or purchase it myself to resell. I would also potentially become certified to offer the HCP class and build a range for the shooting portion of the training. I would try to offer a decent price for the class-maybe in the $50 range. I think my unique approach to this would be to purchase 15-20 of the popular carry guns to have on hand so that folks attending the class can actually go hands on with a variety of options if they haven't made a decision on their EDC weapon. If they feel comfortable with one I can offer to sell them one at a (hopefully) decent price. I'd probably try to make at least one of the monthly classes a ladies only class with my wife involved and have a good selection of 380s and 9s that might be of interest to the ladies, so they can perhaps feel more comfortable without having to contend with us ornery males AND have the opportunity to try out a variety of weapons to decide what is most comfortable for them to shoot and carry. So basically I would be looking to become a personal broker and basic fundamentals trainer for people who are new or need their HCP. I would look to become an official vendor here on TGO as well to support the site and hopefully do some advertising. I know it can be tough to make money as an FFL, but luckily I already have a successful business, so I can afford to take a loss if I have to for awhile. I have two primary motivations for doing this: 1. Business diversification (my current business is IT/Technology related.) 2. I moved to the area in December (purchased a very unique foreclosure home) and there is a 20 acre tract of land that is largely behind my property. The owner of the property is considering building 2-3 duplexes on the land, which would probably impact our property value. I want to purchase the land, but am looking for a way to make it as tax-beneficial as possible, so I'm looking at putting a business on the property. It would be a great place for an outdoor range, but I don't want to be a nuisance, so having HCP classes a couple times a month with the related shooting should work and give me a place to do a little bit of my own shooting at the same time. I'm just beginning to formulate ideas, and I realize I'll need to check with the local gov to make sure I can even do this with the property. I'm just trying to get a feel for whether people in my vicinity that frequent TGO would think this would be of interest to the local community. Thanks for reading!

Were you relying to me? I purchased it used from a guy who sent his in right away. He just got it back yesterday and I bought it. So no they are not to my knowledge shipping new ones or giving dealers preference.

I'm getting closer to closing on a foreclosure home in Castalian Springs, about 8 miles east of Gallatin. I don't know anyone up that way and will be looking for someone to do some repair and upgrade work over time. Here's what I'll be looking to get done, probably over the course of a year, but some of it will be starting real soon after we move in. 1. Carpet and paint in a couple basement rooms. 2. Polish the concrete in the rest of the basement. 3. Drop ceiling in rest of basement, maybe dividing it into several rooms as well (basement area itself is over 3,600 square feet). 4. Replace linoleum in kitchen with tile. 5. Granite countertops in kitchen. 6. Tile master bathroom (currently carpet, home was built in the 80's). 7. At some point completely reconfigure and update the master bathroom. It may be done later at the end of the list, so I may just tile it initially. 8. In an upstairs bathroom, tile to replace linoleum and replace one piece bath/shower unit with something nicer--maybe a custom built tiled tub/shower. 9. Install small counter/sink in a half bath that is missing this currently (looks like it had something at one time, but not now.) 10. Retile a den (currently done in 4.25" white tile.) 11. Carpet and paint an upstairs bedroom that currently has green carpet and sky/cloud painted walls (was probably a play room.) 12. Correct crack and slight settlement of portion of concrete patio which also supports the deck, and fix deck railing (I think the settlement, although very slight, has contributed to destabilizing the deck railing--they cant outward and are not sturdy.) 13. Wrought iron gate across ~600 square foot of road frontage, and an electronic gate on the driveway (stone columns already exist where I want the gate.) 14. Paving of very long gravel driveway. It's probably a good 600 feet long itself. I figured I'd check and see if someone active in the 2A community and located in Sumner is in this line of work and would be interested. The house is big--9,000+ square feet once the basement is refinished (it apparently was finished previously but they took out the flooring and ceiling and never were able to complete the project). We're getting an incredibly good deal on it, but there are these items we'll need to do to get it where we want it.

I haven't sent mine in, mostly because I'm trying to close on a new home and will be moving (foreclosure so it's taking forever.) However, I did just purchase a post-recall XDs .45 yesterday so that when I get moved I can send my other 9 and .45 in and still have one to carry.

There are so many inequalities in our society that we must address, and quickly. It's time for all things abnormal to be recognized as just as legitimate, just as desirable, as things normal. Otherwise, how can every single citizen be happy? We need to take swift action to ensure the happiness of every individual in this country. To that end, let's all do our part and recognize that: Drunkenness is every bit as good and desirable as sobriety, even when driving. Buying stuff with other people's money (or just outright stealing it) is every bit as good and desirable as being self-sufficient. A diet of nothing but Coca-Cola and Twinkies is every bit as good and desirable as healthy, balanced eating. Malignant tumors are every bit as good and desirable as healthy organs. Laziness is every bit as good and desirable as hard work. Dependency is every bit as good and desirable as Independence. Communism is every bit as good and desirable as Democracy. Killing unborn babies is every bit as good and desirable as giving birth. Sex with any gender (or species for that matter), regardless of age, is every bit as good as the sex our bodies are actually designed for. Come on people, let's end all discrimination NOW! Utopia awaits!

They just started construction on this a couple days ago, at least that's what my wife said, and the orange road work signs were up that day. I guess she could be wrong but she said it's the widening of I65 to four lanes all the way to 840. She doesn't have any insider connections--just pays better attention to that stuff than I do.

Spring Hill's Wal-Mart just opened Wednesday, so we're way ahead of you. (I have a Franklin address but I'm really in the Thompson Station area.) It's clean and shiny for now. I'm guessing that won't last long. They did have about the cheapest price I've seen locally on .45acp at $43 and change for WWB 230gr FMJ. I like Fairview--considered it when shopping for a house recently. Looks like I'm probably going up north to Sumner County though where I found a stunning deal on a foreclosure.

And here's where you can check the regional MLS: http://www.realtracs.com

250K will probably get you more in Columbia (Maury) than Spring Hill (Williamson) but Spring Hill is nicer IMO. Fairview is more rural with fewer amenities but you may be able to get acreage in your price range depending on the number of bedrooms you need. I'd pick Fairview over Columbia for the commute. It's an easy drive down 100 and 96 or maybe 840 to Carter's Creek depending on where you end up in Fairview and where the office is in Franklin.

Local Lubricant Manufacture in Middle TN
wtl replied to jhc77's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
+1 for IGG. I used it to clean/lube all my guns. Great stuff. -
It does have a Wilson Combat guide rod and nice rubberized hogue grips.
-
Thanks for the advice! Is your $800 out the door factoring in the modifications made? I know the guide rod and grips probably amount to no more than about $50 or so, but am unsure what the trigger job is worth. It's definitely an interesting trigger--barely any pull required, a true hair trigger. (Which probably means it'll be mostly a range gun or perhaps for competition if I ever get into that.)

I'm looking to get my first 1911, (everything else I own is 9mm polymer), and my favorite LGS has a great condition used Springfield Armory A-1 Loaded (http://springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=4) with the following modifications: 1. Wilson Combat guide rod. 2. Hogue rubber grips (unsure of exact model but they are very grippy and fit my hand really well--slightly indented where the fingers go). 3. Trigger job. The owner handed it to me and told me to dry fire it, and I was surprised by the hair trigger--barely any pressure required to fire. I don't know who did the trigger job. LGS wants $799. The gun seems to be in great shape, and it seems like a good deal, but I'd like a second (and third, fourth etc.) opinion, seeing as I have no experience purchasing/appraising a 1911.

I love my VersaCarry. I carry the XDS so the grip safety and safe handling allay any worries I might have about the body side trigger exposure. I loaded up with snap caps and tried purposefully to cause a trigger pull with all sorts of motion along the belt, take off and put back on, and couldn't make it happen even with the grip safety disengaged. I also have a CBST and FirearmHolster.com IWB but I can't get used to them because the VersaCarry is so much more comfortable. They are up for sale now. The barrel retention rod is not going to break, and even if it did the diameter is slightly smaller than the caliber and won't get stuck in the barrel. Even if you are so paranoid you don't believe me, how hard is it to break down the weapon and push it out with a punch or screwdriver? If you've seen the videos where they turn the VersaCarry with gun upside down and the VersaCarry retains the gun, the retention has nothing to do with the diameter of the barrel retention rod. The retention rod is angled toward the side of the VersaCarry and it's the pressure of the retention rod against the side of the barrel that retains the gun. It's really quite impressive. You insert the barrel at a 45 degree angle onto the retention rod and then align the gun parallel to the VersaCarry to push the barrel retention rod away from the side of the VersaCarry, which allows the gun to be pushed into place. Essentially the barrel retention rod is pushing against the side of the barrel to retain the gun. Draw is easy and fast too. Personally it's the most comfortable carry method I have found so far. There is a spot at about 3:30 on my hip where I hardly feel the gun even though the rear of the slide and grip is against my skin (I typically carry in jeans and a t-shirt.) At this location on my hip I've even driven for several hours straight with no discomfort.

Does anyone know a good home inspector up in the Gallatin area who can also recommend remedies? I think most home inspectors probably just note problems and that's about it. I made an offer on the property, but it's contingent on the home inspection, and there are three issues I need to have someone really competent look over and advise me on: 1. There is a roof leak around a chimney--probably the flashing and an easy fix. 2. There are areas of moisture along the front of the house in the basement, which seem to correspond to the downspouts which run underground. I figure the lines are backed up and causing overflow against the foundation--in which case the fix should be fairly easy as well. 3. Huge deck on back of house has the railing canting outward a bit, which appears could be due to settling of the concrete patio below (cracked) pulling the columns down a bit, although the desk seems level. Maybe an easy fix or may need to figure out how to boost the columns and then fill in concrete to re-level the patio. Other than the above the house seems in really good shape, and at 50 cents on the dollar (foreclosure) will be a good investment and a nice place to live.
