  1. I am looking at the Tactikka Plus right now. It is only rated to 35 lumens, 4 LEDs with red filter. http://www.rei.com/product/709063/petzl-tactikka-plus-led-headlamp The Tikka Plus and XP models are higher lumen, but dedicated red LEDs and the stock photo appears to only be 1 red led which implies low output and not much of an upgrade from what i have.. Still looking online and watching for other suggestions but right now the Tactikka Plus is top on my list.
  2. Posting here instead of gear or hunting to maybe get more input. I realized today while walking in/out of the woods that my red headlamp is terrible. I have a cheap Energizer HDL33A2 led from Walmart that uses 2 red LEDs http://www.walmart.com/msharbor/ip/Energizer-HDL33A2E-Energizer-Pro-6-LED-Headlight/8111444 I have two issues with this lamp -i have to press the button 4 times to get to red, and the red output is weak (beam lights just a couple of feet in front of me). I searched on Google and found that Zebralight h31r or h51r seem to be about the best but they are discontinued and seem to be out of stock everywhere. So, does anyone have any recommendations for good red handlight? Red mode only, or multi mode but easy to switch straight to red. I don't want to spend too much as it will be mainly for hunting but also a backup general use handsfree light. The Petzl Tikka also appears very highly rated, any firsthand users here?
  3. I'm cheering for MSU now too. My brother attends there and my mom works on campus in the admin building.
  4. Just got home from hunting and turned it on. Saw last 5 minutes of 3rd quarter and some nice runs.
  5. I arrived late, 1:30. Passed 6 does on the neighbors corner lot when pulling in. Those were all I saw tonight, am undecided about going in the morning. I should have hunted the field line instead of the ridge I think.
  6. I have considered trying Omaha. I grew up on a farm so used to good beef, not store bought. But my parents moved and my few contacts quit raising or selling beef so I have been stuff with store bought. May try some from Omaha and see how it tastes, have heard good things before. Ideally i would find someone local and buy half a beef off them though.
  7. If you place any faith in the lunar tables, this afternoon right before sunset should be great. I look at the tables but don't rely on them. I plan on being back on the ridge line right after lunch.
  8. I went and didn't realize that freezing rain had hit the farm overnight until I got halfway to the stand. I went ahead and carefully climbed the ladder and sat anyways, but at 8:30 with no movement I climbed down and came home. It was flurrying a bit at the farm too but not my house -about 20 minutes apart. Will see what the weather is like and may head back this afternoon. I want to put 3 more I'm the freezer and with my work schedule I only get the weekends.
  9. I'm getting up in the morning to go. Weather shows about 30 degrees with 10% chance of precipitation and 13mph wind. Should be excellent hunting conditions, similar to Thanksgiving day when we saw a bunch moving. Hunting the ridge line again, if weather was worse tonight or if colder in the morning i would hunt the field but sticking to sheltered ridge and acorns tomorrow.
  10. If you can share, please let us know what happened. Important thing though is she is back!
  11. Terrible, I cannot even imagine what this must be like. I'm a ways away in Columbia but would be willing to help as needed. Thoughts go out to the entire family.
  12. I didn't get one either, went with a blem lower instead and wife restricted me to one triple digit item... One of these days I will pick up a Mosin and would love to get my grandfather's Garand from him.
  13. I have a red dot on my turkey gun but could not imagine trying to shoot a quick flying target with one. I suppose geese may not be too bad, but even with turkeys a fiber optic sight is quicker to acquire.
  14. That is a beautiful rifle. Congrats.
  15. I considered buying that but am being patient and waiting for the $399-$425 complete upper with BCG and CH that they have every few weeks. I missed out on a deal last week, think it was Wednesday when they had it. But I grabbed a blem PSA Magpul lower before they sold out.
  16. I wouldn't mind a set with 3 or 4 tines on each antler. I've been wanting to make my own antler lamp and convinced the wife I could make an antler wall sconce but I'm a couple antlers short and haven't seen a small 6 point to shoot yet this year.
  17. Great game! Loved seeing Bama get beat. Couldn't believe they tried that long FG, but I'm sure it was considered 'safe' - miss and go to OT or get lucky and win. I sure didn't see a 109 yard return coming.
  18. It has been a couple of years since i hunted over water (pond on a farm) but I typically saw deer drink between 7:30 and 9:00 am. I never saw any come drink in the afternoon, but there was water on the neighboring farm. IMO, better off hunting over food than trying over water.
  19. Gamestop and several other stores had BF4 on sale for black friday, $25. I picked it up for PS3 and wish I had gotten it sooner.
  20. I do pretty much all my shopping online, or I wait until late Friday afternoon to go out. I bought a PSA blem Magpul lower this morning (PSA had some great deals), and today around 4:00 will probably run out to town to look at a couple of stores. There was nothing I had to battle a crowd for so I just wait until the crowds are gone and then go in and still claim a couple of deals.
  21. Agree with Slappy, I love watching the world wake up around me in the morning. I will hunt either time, but I used to avoid afternoons for some reason I never really figured out. I tend to hunt woods in the morning and field edge in the afternoon is my only hunting pattern.
  22. Truck said 14 degrees for us this morning too. Went with my FIL and a friend out to the farm, I saw 4 deer and put two of them on the ground (does). Had a group of three walk up behind me at 7:00 and dropped one, was waiting and fixing to climb out of my stand to gut her when another doe came up in front of my at 7:50. Broadside shot at 60 yards, I couldn't pass on it. My FIL put a doe on the ground too so we had three to take care of today. It was a cold day but the deer were moving!
  23. I live I town, so do my processing in the garage. Have a hanger that go into my truck receiver and has a winch built-in to it. I bag the carcass and take it to the dump or throw it out in a field down the road if the dump is closed. Coyotes and the like dispose of it quick.
  24. Dropped a doe this morning, was back home by 7:30. Started out a as a busted hunt, first time heading to the farm i hunt with my father in law this year, walked out the ridge towards the ladder stand and....it was gone. I walked around for 20 minutes looking, knew i was in the right spot due to some landmarks, including a piece of tin sticking out of the ground that isn't going to move. Finally stopped and stood next to a tree waiting for daylight, still couldn't spot the stand so was debating heading to the stand over the field when i spied a doe walking up over the edge of the ridge. She stopped about 50 yards away and i dropped her, walked over to her and found the stand. FIL moved it to the opposite side of the ridge and wrapped camo netting all over it. :-)
