Tighten barrel nut with no vise?
TNMTBik3r replied to TNMTBik3r's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Hmm, I do have some c-clamps. Should have considered that earlier. If I can get the gas block off I may try using those clamps. My gas block is held on with hex screws and I just went through 30 wrenches and none fit. Need to find my other pouch of Allen wrenches and try them. I'm going to wait a couple days and ask another neighbor when he gets home if he has a vice. If not will try the c-clamps. -
Tighten barrel nut with no vise?
TNMTBik3r replied to TNMTBik3r's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
The gas tube does run through so not moving much but is noticeable. Had this upper a few months now and there has not been any movement before. I noticed it as soon as I grabbed the rifle out of the safe today. May pull the gas block/tube and try to tighten without a vice but don't have much confidence that will work to torque to spec. -
Shot one of my ARs yesterday, sitting here cleaning it today and noticed that my handguard had some play in it. After looking closer, realized that the entire barrel nut was rotating slightly and it feels like the barrel may even have some play (may just be my imagination, feels like it wiggles but no visible movement). This is a factory JSE upper that I have not noticed any issues with. Unfortunately I don't have a vise. And neither does my neighbor. I bought a Wheeler Armorers kit last week so have the upper clamp block, proper wrench, and torque wrench. Just don't have a vise to mount this in and tighten it properly. Would it be possible to tighten to spec without a vise? I don't think it would be but wanted to check with people who have built an upper before ( I have only built lowers). Best solution would be to just go buy a vise, but I don't really have a spot to mount it on my bench. Cannot wait to move and have more room to work on stuff.

Yep that's the one at Peytonsville. I drive by there tonight, but would have been nice to seen the blast earlier.

He can't wait! I may have to hunt over in that spot when he isn't here in town this season. That rub was fresh enough that bark was still piled up on the ground and not covered by any leaves.

I never found a great deal on un-lubed bullets but was fixing to order some from Rocky Mountain Reloading or SNS - both were $90/1k shipped. However, I was looking on a Facebook reloading group the other day and found a smoking deal on some lubed bullets. This is a full medium flat rate box after I combined the shipment - 2500 lubed/sized .452 bullets. Got these shipped for $30 per 500   These will last me a little while! Unsure if I will melt the lube and coat, powder coat over the lube, or shoot as is. May do a bit of all.

My brother in law wanted to go out this morning and take a look at the stands, he hasn't been able to hunt the past 2 years so is super excited to be back and for season to start. While looking at the area he has hunted before, we stumbled upon this rub 30 yards from the tree he climbs.

I had a lower from them that showed processing two months after I had it in my hands. They ship some small items in a couple days to a week, most lowers/uppers within 3 weeks is my experience.

Best low cost pistol AR stripped lower currently?
TNMTBik3r replied to Tobashadow's topic in Handguns
I have an Anderson lower, no issues with it. Seems to be on par with my PSA lowers. $50 out the door is a good deal. I also bought 3 PSA lowers when they were on sale for $49.99 weeks ago. I still have one sitting here I plan to build into a 6.8 rifle. -
Barnes bullets are longer than others because they are solid copper, so a 62gr may not stabilize the best in your barrel. My first 1:9 barrel was probably closer to 1:10 because the longer 62gr did not stabilize properly. If it was a short 60-65 grain it would stabilize.

I use the exact same data with no issues, using mid level powder charges. Everything I read said use the same data, but work up the load just to be safe.

Here ya go. I don't have a digital photo from that day, scanned in the print I have one time but very poor quality.

All about shot placement. 150-200 yards is about my max hunting range regardless of caliber even though I know I can reliably hit further targets with my 30-06. With my AR I plan to keep it within 100-120 yards but I have no fear about using the caliber on the small deer here in TN. A well placed shot and a reliable Nosler/Sierra/etc bullet will put them down every time.
-
TSX and TTSX are expensive but they work very well. Sierra 65gr GameKings are more accurate from both of my ARs or I would use Barnes.
-
I am using 60gr Nosler Partitions and 65gr Sierra Gamekings in mine. Also have 62gr Federal Fusions and 64gr Nosler bonded solid base bullets but do not get the same accuracy as with the first two bullets. They would be fine out to about 50 yards but after that the groups are too open for me to trust with either AR.

I have a Radical Firearms upper and very happy with it. If I wasn't building a pistol I would buy one of these.

Talking about injuries and antler growth, my very first deer was a nontypical 6 point when I was 9 years old. Had 4 points on one side and two on the other, with one of the two being a drop tine. While skinning him it looked like his leg had been broken and was still trying to heal - I remember it was a big knot and popped with any movement.

I wish I had a couple of different places to hunt. I hate hunting one place all the time, just haven't had luck finding a place and the available leases are too expensive. This spot is pretty reliable, I can take 4 or 5 pretty easily to fill the freezer (last year took 4 on 6 hunts). The ridge I primarily hunt is covered in acorns and hickory nuts, and now that this pear tree is producing the field should be really hot again. The past 3 years I have taken 8 pointers from the field without this food source so really excited about what may be drawn in.
-
I'm excited because the pear tree in the field corner I hunt is loaded with pears this year! Been bare the past 3 years, seems to only produce on a 3-4 year cycle. It is always a big hit, but I didn't see any on the ground yet last Saturday.

Look at DNZ products, they may have a mount. I remember when I bought a new mount for my 110 that they seemed to have something for every Savage model.

I have read good things but never ordered from them. Their name came up a few times when I was shopping for parts.

If you are still looking for a wrench, depending on what else you may need this seems like a great deal... http://www.cabelas.com/product/Wheeler-AR-Armorers-Master-Kit/1844414.uts?WTz_l=EML%3Bcat153203580 I am really thinking about grabbing this myself.

Alright so I decided why wait, went ahead and tried it. Tried just a spot on my finger, then found a leftover piece of kielbasa my daughter didn't eat and covered it in the hot sauce. I have to say this stuff is awesome! Very good flavor and just a low burn. Nothing like typical habanero sauce.
-
Sam,thanks again for the hot sauce. It arrived yesterday, haven't had a chance to try it yet but should be able to with tomorrow's dinner.

Well said Sam! Pretty much how i feel except I hate Macs... :). Had to support them in a Windows enterprise environment for too long.
