There are plenty of scorpions, the small pretty much solid brown ones, around Watts Bar Lake and Ocoee River/Parksville Lake, two of my stomping grounds growing up. I got popped by one (stepped on it barefoot) as a kid. Not too much worse than a wasp sting, except it hurt for a couple of hours instead of just a few min. But then, I'm not allergic to any of the common stingeroos, have been pegged by yellowjackets 20 or 30 at a time, stuff like that, no probs. - OS

A burl in wood is abnormal growth pattern/rings due to that area of the tree being distressed in some way and the wood continuing to grow around the "wound", from insects, constriction, fungus, whatever. A burl pattern also sometimes happens where a limb joins a tree, although this isn't how the term is usually used. - OS

Few subjects regarding self defense are ever totally black and white. I can think of any number of scenarios for drawing a weapon but not using it. Indeed there are times when DRAWING a weapon but not showing it would be prudent, and there are times when SHOWING it (but not shooting) could save your ass. Indeed, 3 times in my life, the latter tactic worked for moi. - OS

Well, I agree to a certain extent. The trade off with Kahrs, especially the PM series, is to get the incredibly compact size in 9mm, .40, and .45, there must be less "slop" (tech term). And yes, they must be kept cleaned and lubed. I've often said that a Kahr is not for a gun slob or a new shooter that isn't going to be fairly religious about firearm maintenance. There's no reason why a Kahr won't do 10,000 rounds or better before springs or something or other need to be changed out (and any number do), but it's not a Glock or XD that will generally reliably function regardless of neglect. It is not a "combat" or even "duty" firearm. - OS
