  1. Did they not have to do with ALL posts being lost on the 29th during certain time frame due to a backup restore? http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/tn-gun-owners-announcements/24938-server-problems-july-29-2009-read.html#post330278 - OS
  2. I think it's so they can put you in jail if you don't pay. Probably the highest crime stat in whole town. - OS
  3. They're open 24/7, really. - OS
  4. I watched on TV and that was correct. Joe Hultquist, who had asked for the standing count, even said "no one?", best I remember. You can watch the meeting at: Community Television of Knoxville | Community Access | Knoxville, TN or direct to the video itself: City Council - July 28, 2009 All the carry discussion happens at first of meeting, shortly after prayer and whatnot. - OS
  5. XD's are fine with any commercial ammo out there. They have supported chamber so they are less likely to KaBoom even from an excessively hot round that slipped by quality control than some other makes. Obviously, hand loads can be suspect, you have to really trust who made them, or yourself. I carry Golden Saber 124 gr. +p in both my XD9s and have shot maybe 200 rounds of it just to make sure it functions correctly in both these guns, my Kahr PM9, and even my Hi-Point 995 carbine. Have also done the same with some 124 gr. +p Gold Dot made by Georgia Arms that I bought a stash of. And yeah, +p is bound to take more a toll long term on your weapon. But unless you have really deep pockets you're not going to be shooting a couple hundred rounds per week of it at range. Besides, XD has lifetime warranty...if you're able to "wear your gun out" (I'm thinking 50K rounds as possible threshold) they'll put it back to factory specs. - OS
  6. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/tennessee-politics-legislation/24853-knox-city-council-meet-july-27th-urgent.html We've lost the last few posts there due to the TGO server glitches, though...a couple of them extensive. I'll try to recreate mine sometime this evening. - OS
  7. True. But if the gummit wanted to put in the effort, they could find out most of the guns I have bought, so in true tinfoil hat sense, they would sure know where to come and try to git 'em. - OS
  8. I agree...gun can be traced to at least first buyer, so at that point it really IS "registration" - so the only real difference is that subsequent FTF sales aren't "registered". That and the fact that there's not an extra fee for doing it. - OS
  9. Quick way to prove it's the router: when you lose connection, surf into it: http://192.168.1.1/ (this is just from your browser to the router, you aren't using the internet). Probably under STATUS heading, you'll see DHCP RELEASE button at bottom, click that. Then after it frees, click the DHCP RENEW next to it. If you're right back online, it's the router dropping things. You can try updating or just refreshing the firmware on the router, sometimes that helps. Go to Linksys and find firmware update, directions are there. - OS
  10. Good that some folks quoted OP, so he can't edit it away when he wakes up. - OS
  11. Bat, it's about 23 miles north from town. - OS
  12. Dizzie, I'm far from claiming to know much about sophisticated ballistics, but: +p is generally 50-100 feet per second faster than the same weight bullet fired from standard loading. For example, Remington offers 5 different 124 gr. 9mm loads. The standard ones are 1100-1125 fps. The +p one is 1180 fps In this case, the +p round is likely to do more damage than the standard ones. It's generally a good thing to use +p, say, in .38 special, because that's generally a good bit slower round in standard loading than some other calibers with about the same bullet weights. We're talking self-defense purposes here, not shooting for precision target purposes, etc. +p is a published standard for loading in some calibers (.38 special, 9mm, .45 acp) +p+ is "made up" - OS
  13. Something I never really thought about before: Lots of air guns/rifles shoot at 800-1000 fps. But they don't seem to be very human lethal (maybe in eye socket or temple at near contact distance). Well, lots of .38 and less calibers are only 750-900 fps, but a well placed shot or three will generally do it. So, what's the big diff? - OS
  14. I knew those Micro Eagles were heavier than a polymer gun, but just wow! - OS
  15. The latest at: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/handgun-carry-self-defense/24853-knox-city-council-meet-july-27th-urgent.html#post329909 Postponed to Aug 25th for vote, public "workshop" on Aug. 20. Mods, can we get these two threads merged, probably best to this forum here? - OS
  16. As intimated to me beforehand, action on the carry in parks was postponed at start of city council meeting. There is to be a "workshop" on the 20th of August, to allow supposedly extensive citizen input, and the final action on the regular meeting on the 25th. Joe Hultquist, who is against at least a blanket ban on carry in parks, asked the audience to stand who were FOR the ban and NO ONE stood. Asked for those AGAINST the ban and quite a few stood, guessing about 20 that I could see from the camera shot!! Good goin', y'all in attendance !! I will definitely be there on the 20th, since it sounds as if most everyone can be heard. I urge all other Knoxvillians to do same - it's doubly important, as it sounds as if Knox County council will follow this lead. - OS
  17. And this makes another good target for thieves, who know likelihood of finding guns in cars at such events is better than average. Just like posted restaurants. - OS
  18. Got non-committal responses from Barbara Pelot, Marilyn Roddy, and Joe Bailey. My specific councilman, Robert Booker, is only one who doesn't list email. Tried calling him, no answer and no answering machine, great. However, Joe Hultquist sent a very lucid and favorable response: "It's good to hear from you. I'm pretty much in agreement with you. I encourage you to come to the City Council meeting tonight if you can, even if you don't intend to speak. It is very important for there to be a good "head count" so that Council members can see for themselves that there are a lot of people who understand this issue and don't want such an (apparently) unnecessary restriction. I also encourage you to try to get others you know to attend in support of your position." I called Cindy Mitchell, the City Recorder, to see about getting on the speakers list, but she said it was full. Matter of fact, only allowing 3 on each side for this particular meeting. She thought that the matter might not even be heard this evening, but postponed, and that probably even if heard, an actual vote would be postponed. So, that being, I've decided not to attend this evening. You can see City Council live on channel 12 on Comcast, starting at 7, so I'll see what's up. I will definitely attend the next meeting (and I'll kick myself if the matter actually gets decided tonight.). All indications are that it's likely to be another really messy decision, with some parks, or parts of parks, being off limits due to ball fields or schools, or something or other. Bound to be a convoluted camel (a horse designed by committee). I am SO disappointed in the TN Legislature for their wimpy edition of this statute. A state law should be just that, a law that is the same state wide. - OS
  19. I may not can go, then. I haven't gone anywhere without gun in a year. And much longer than that with my beloved blades! - OS
  20. I guess you mean at entrance into the assembly room? Haven't been there since I've been carrying, but was never swept or anything just to get into the building to register a car or something. - OS
  21. Send it to the city council members as per above email addresses, they're the ones who vote. I sent email to them all, so far only one has responded, noncommittal response. I'm thinking I'll go down there tomorrow evening...if the speaker list isn't packed, maybe I'll even say something. Hmmm...can you carry in the City County Building? - OS
  22. I assumed this was a weekend report on normal Memphis weekend when I first opened it. - OS
  23. Of course, he must be vague - he's running for governor. - OS
  24. Just like the federal buildings you can't carry in either. - OS
  25. Isn't there something cheap can do, like put neat little strips of inner tube or something around the scope barrel? $30 for rings on a $150 rifle seems kinda pricey. - OS
