  1. Yeah, I sort of went the other way, got 870 Express Synthetic with 18" smooth barrel cylinder bore for defense with buck/slugs, and picked up a spare 28" with RemChoke for possible hunting or clays. - OS
  2. I thought that was what you were referring to. However the law, as has been copied in this thread, does NOT support that. Again: "It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to deliver or cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce, to persons other than licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors, any package or other container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is being transported or shipped; ..." and "No person shall knowingly deliver or cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce to any person other than a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector, any package or other container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is being transported or shipped: " - OS
  3. Like foxes voting to stay out of the hen house - yeah, I'm sure that will pass. - OS
  4. I use Download Helper plugin for FireFox and GOM player, seems to play everything, including FLVs - OS
  5. Their rep as Skyy was so bad they changed name to Sccy. Shrewd. - OS
  6. Yep, same... Enjoyed it muchly, GREAT dinner and company. I TRIED to get to range, but was a wreck on Winfield Dunn, 30 min to go 2 miles made that a no go, so went back up to the flea market and Bass Pro to kill some time and try again, glad I came back for the supper. - OS
  7. Well, one of the main reasons you get cleaner using soap and water instead of water alone is that the soap grabs gunk in a colloidal suspension and emulsifies normally insoluble goop so that it will dissolve in the water. So start using soap when you shower, Mikey! - OS
  8. Well, one biggie is insulin. You can't store it for long, even with refrigeration, so you can't really stock up on it for any long term meltdown. - OS
  9. Well, it's amazing the dedication to the public the drivers' still maintain, even though all the internal bitterness. One of the hardest things when I left was saying bye to all the folks on the route I had gotten to know and care about. Also, to confuse matters further, FedEx Home Delivery is a division of Ground, but operate different days than Ground. Of course with both divisions, many contractor own several routes and hire drivers to cover them, who don't have the same deeply invested interest in service, and there are of course some occasional problems due to that. Matter of fact, FDX has encouraged this multiple route thing, as has helped to put a layer of "hiring" between management and contractor which has lessened FDX culpability in both labor and accident lawsuits. - OS
  10. Can't tell you about postings on many attractions, but the Tennessee Aquarium is said to have a small non-compliant one somewhere...I carried there (concealed) and never noticed. Loaded long guns are okay in car in TN with your permit BUT can't have one in the chamber. Any business can post a no carry sign but they are supposed to be of certain wording (or actually, "substantially similar" to the wording, a real gray area - a simple "no guns" type logo is not)....of course, well concealed carry avoids a multitude of worries about that sort of thing. Oh, law changed to allow carry in municipal public parks, but cities/counties can opt out of that - all Chattanooga parks are supposedly no carry zones, but are also supposed to be posted with exact wording, although there's a couple sections of greenway I walk when down there that have no signs at all. Hopefully, some actual residents of there will chime in, I only visit every 6 weeks or so. - OS
  11. Huge scam. The only "independent contracting" decisions the drivers' have now is where to purchase fuel and who to work on their trucks. X has paid out untold millions (perhaps billion or more, haven't kept up since I left) in settlements and legal fees over the last decade or so, defending their "contract model" to the bitter end, because they make out like bandits on it. They've had to modify their operations in several states. Terminated all individual contractor's in California rather than admit employee status, etc, etc. I imagine that sooner or later, "all will be one" in the sense of all being employees and all the divisions being branded same. Largest class action national lawsuit is hopefully finally nearing completion, something like 34 states' individual class suits have been consolidated for fact finding into federal court. I knew it was dirty when I got in, (although HOW dirty even surprised me) but knew I'd only be in for a few years tops, got what I needed out of it, and sold out. Actually enjoyed the work itself, although was brutal hours and workload to make a decent buck, with X basically determining how much you could make and how much hell they'd put you through to make it. Unlike me, many there are stuck, with huge investments, employees of their own, no way out since they have families to support, yet keep doing more for less, many treading water or failing outright. The Ground division has financially ruined many a life. Hope to see a little bonus when the suits are all settled. The Express division is almost as bad, even though they are employees. Since Fred has successfully kept the union out through decades of greasing the right palms in DC, the guys are something like $10/hr less top pay than UPS with much fewer bennies. That's if they "top out", which few are ever allowed to do. I understand the general anti-union bent on TGO, but if ever workers needed one, it is those in the various divisions of FedEx. FedEx is still classed as an "airline", and protected from unions under the archaic Railway Labor Act, while UPS is a "trucking company". They each of course conduct the same business in the same way. Only the pilots have a good way to go. Sigh...this is all just a touch of what goes on in Fred's empire, Sorry for the hugely off topic rant ... I feel better, was it good for you too? - OS

    FORE!

Much depends on type of ball, too. None are wound anymore, but there are still 2 piece, 3 piece, and 4 piece, all with various properties of each layer. The cheapest are still just 2 piece, with a large solid core and cover. Those generally split into various pieces if you hit close to center, even a lawnmower will carve em in half. - OS
  13. Can you ask them to lend me a few hundred grand? I promise to pay it back. Welcome aboard. - OS
  14. Wow, thanks for that. I HAVE been guilty of that. - OS
  15. Oh, I don't have any plans to hunt anymore...I've spent mucho time in outdoors in the past, have seen many deer in the wild (although I've seen more in the last 25 years in what I called suburbia when I was kid!). Used to damn near trip over boar in Tellico while squirrel hunting, etc. Too many hobbies now, and fishing used to be my primary outdoor passion anyway, gonna get back into that soon as possible. This was mainly question as to how folks shoot at longer distances (non-bench) and figgered you hunters were the likeliest guys to ask. If I need wild game, I can start with all the doves (and pigeons - let's call them squab, yum!) that are a few feet away from my back deck right here in town. Only need a handful of birdseed and my BB gun! Yes, thanks for comment, and I'm fully aware of that. I certainly didn't buy the gun because of the scope. Grabbed it because it was actually $30 cheaper than I could get it at WalMart without a scope. I'll shoot some more, iron and scope, and see. Probably just need to work on breath control and stance first - I never really spent any real time shooting at 100 yards or more. Of course my nervous system is probably not first rate anyway ... (besides normal age, I'm one of those guys who doesn't really remember the 60's-70's all that well). - OS
  16. My word...I can't buy a meal like that fresh from their shop and cook it myself for two/three times that price... Place may actually be overrun now that you've posted that! Looking forward to meeting everyone I've not met (which is most of you coming, sounds like)...always great to put faces with screen names...thanks for instigating this whole thang. I'll see whoever at the range unless any of us hook up before that. - OS (Mac)
  17. Yep. Doubly so at FedEx Ground and Home Delivery. The package handlers aren't even full time employees, just temps who mostly give about 4% of a shyte. On the other hand, once the driver actually gets it, it will likely get better care than through any other service, FedEx Express OR UPS, since contractors are generally held personally financially responsible for damage/lost claims. (FedEx Ground and Home Delivery guys are not employees, but contractors). Of course, except for actually lost shipments, unless you are a volume company shipper, most all claims for damages are initially denied. That's SOP for all divisions of FredX. In the case of Ground, it's particularly dirty in that regard, as X might eventually pay customer for "market value" of the items if the customer has the tenacity to jump through all the hoops, while taking the full max insured amount from contractor's settlement and pocketing the difference. - OS
  18. Infowars has put out continuing "alerts" regarding proposed legislation that was killed a year or two in the past. Source of much of the "have you heard about this!" tiresome postings on every gun board. - OS
  19. Well, that's a little bit of comfort, thanks. I don't expect to be deer hunting, unless it's after The Meltdown, just curious to gauge my (lack of) handheld marksmanship. - OS
  20. Well, I dunno, but the Marlinites say they do a a few inches or better at 200 yards with conventional shells, and better than that with the Hornady LE stuff. I was just shooting Rem CoreLockt 170 gr. I probably should have, John, if I'd only known...I should know to ask you about ANY gun first! ...just got the ole uncontrollable urge at Dick's couple of weeks ago. It's the cheapo 336A, which Marlin doesn't even show onsite any more, although seems same as 336W, except it has the end barrel "cap" instead of barrel band.Truly no name scope came with it, doesn't even say "Marlin" or even "made in China" on it. (3-9 x 32). After rebate, $325 for whole thang. Mac
  21. Was shooting my new .30-30 Marlin today. I never deer hunted growing up, just small game/birds. This is my only larger caliber rifle, and with newly tweaked cheapo scope, was putting all in 8" plate at 120 yards. I'd say with practice and a little more scope tweaking, maybe can cut down to 4-5" circle. BUT this was shooting off rest. Not solid bipod, but just little soft rest on top of ammo can, sitting down. Offhand, standing up, even steadying with strap wrapped around arm, I was lucky to hit the plate 1 out of 5. I know that probably half the deer shots in TN are taken at 50 yards or less, but how do y'all make longer ones? Offhand, or with those long stick bipods, or what? How do most of your shoot from ground blinds and/or tree stands? Just offhand? Maybe I've just gotten beau coup unsteady in my advanced years, dunno. - OS
  22. I'm not worried about testing anything. The couple of times I've had to send a gun back to a manufacturer, I've boxed it up, paid/printed an online UPS sticker, and dropped it at a UPS store. How about companies that TELL you to claim the gun is "parts" in their shipping instructions? If it were illegal, don't you think BATF might have had a word with them by now? - OS
  23. You don't think it's significant that the majority of folks who post here who said they called after 3-4 weeks, have been told that their permit was "just issued", or "was issued yesterday", or "will be issued today"? - OS
  24. Um..the law IS the statutes. The ATF is um...well, let's just say they are supposed to enforce the law and not write it. I can't find "B 8". If you mean a FAQ, the ATF has played fast and loose with actual law forever. Their long going statement in some FAQ or other on their site (which I can't find right now) regarding notification to carrier is just wrong, simple as that. It's one of those "everybody knows because ATF says". At any rate, if you can copy/paste just what you're referring to above, would make it helpful in understanding your point. - OS
