  1.   "Engaged in the business" of being a gunsmith, from USC:   " ... a person who devotes time, attention, and labor to engaging in such activity as a regular course of trade or business with the principal objective of livelihood and profit, but such term shall not include a person who makes occasional repairs of firearms, or who occasionally fits special barrels, stocks, or trigger mechanisms"   See my previous post for definition of "principal objective of livelihood and profit"   Can't say for sure regarding storing others' firearms if not "engaged in the business", but AFAIK it's not federally unlawful in and of itself any more than it is to keep one for a relative or friend or whatever.   - OS
  2. This style mount is the quick release itself. If you put some kind of quick release attachment on top, scope likely gets too high for good cheek weld/eye alignment, so you have to just use QD rings or QD PEPR type if you want side mount to stay in place. Of course, then you're limited to a see through type mount or you couldn't use the irons. My WASR with just a UTG mount, which I've found to be perfectly adequate, whole shebang comes off pert quick, return to zero seems plenty good enough. The newer "Pro" version of it claims to be see through also, so would give both options I guess: - OS
  3.   Nothing official to date AFAIK.   Widely reported that "a law office" said an AK and a 9mm pistol.  Also widely reported that the Reinhold (FBI agent in charge) said he got "at least some of them legally". All those stories point to NBC news as source but none of the links I follow actually show NBC saying that any more and can find no vid or direct quote from ABC or of a press conference where he did either. No pix of the weapons ever surfaced.   Whole thing has been played closer to the vest than any other shooting in recent memory.   - OS
  4. "Experts say the ramped-up visibility of terrorism after the deadly attacks in Paris has created a different climate for how authorities discuss such investigations."   "FBI spokeswoman Joyce McCants says the agency may have an update on the Chattanooga case this week."   Indeed, acknowledging the event as "terrorism" at this late date would seem to verify the first contention, basically that it's not reason but politics that determines such stuff.   Hell, maybe they'll "reevaluate" Fort Hood massacre. Still never acknowledged as terrorism, and took an act of Congress just to get folks the frigging Purple Heart.   - OS
  5. Mikey Gideon just HATES that guy. ;)   - OS
  6.   He can likely "sell it" the old fashioned 'Mericun way like with liquor licenses, building permits, inspections, easements, etc -- by simply greasing the right palm with the right amount.   - OS
  7.   Yup. They won't issue you one unless the locals give you a biz license to do it at the location you want to do it from.   - OS
  8. That may be how the agent put it, but it's not really correct.   That may be closer to it, as far as coming under scrutiny, but it's still not definitive, there's no number of guns or number of guns within a certain time limit that automatically defines unlawful behavior.   The test is simply whether you can be proven to be "engaged in the business" of doing so.   Per federal law, the definition of that is:   "...a person who devotes time, attention, and labor to dealing in firearms as a regular course of trade or business with the principal objective of livelihood and profit through the repetitive purchase and resale of firearms, but such term shall not include a person who makes occasional sales, exchanges, or purchases of firearms for the enhancement of a personal collection or for a hobby, or who sells all or part of his personal collection of firearms"   And principal objective of livelihood and profit is:   "...that the intent underlying the sale or disposition of firearms is predominantly one of obtaining livelihood and pecuniary gain, as opposed to other intents, such as improving or liquidating a personal firearms collection"   Hence, even buying a gun with the intent to sell it before even firing it is no conclusive test of either condition -- perfectly legit to grab a deal new or used on a firearm that you figure you can sell for more, to throw the bucks toward some other heater.  There is no length of time required for one to hold a firearm before selling it, whether transferred through an FFL or in personal transactions where legal. And as you say, whether you make a profit on any particular firearm is not the test either.   Of course, sure ... it's ultimately not your call whether you fit under the definition. If I did as much of it as I see some folks doing, especially with firearms they haven't held very long, I'd be pert careful to document where the funds went from each selling transaction.    As an aside, I wonder if the funds even have to go back into firearms at all to fit under "enhancing a personal collection or a hobby", though that may be the intent of that particular wording,  not sure.   - OS
  9. Anywhere you see their screen name that's hot linked. Takes you to their public profile, where "leave feedback" is one of the clickable boxes. Here's yours:
  10.   Perhaps they seek to get back their R&D cost at a faster rate for a while on a new caliber, dunno. I haven't noticed over when other calibers are added to an existing line.   Oh, and also, the .22 is the only one in the line that has the fiber optic front sight. I see they charge 62.50 for a combined rear and front fiber optic set, so that's part of it I guess. Also the only one that's offered with the groovy wood inset grip, and looks like it might be the rare Magellan Coihue found only in remote regions of Tierra Del Fuego. ;)   - OS
  11.   Oranges to oranges to be fair, MSRP for the .22, which is in stainless with adjustable sight,  is $50 more than stainless adjustable sight .357 models.   - OS
  12.   I used to edit for money, it's a tough habit to break. ;)   “Only God gets it right the first time and only a slob says, "Oh well, let it go, that's what copy editors are for.” ― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft   edit: added quote :)
  13.   I don't use it, but it's a setting in app on the phone, not in the TGO IP Board interface.
  14. ...   Doesn't affect the TapaTalk sigs, as they are added to body of post, not in forum signature field.   - OS
  15. Please. It's time. Turn off the damn "sent from my whiz bang phone by TapaTalk" sig line.   Pet peeve, irritating addition to reading a post, tired of seeing it.   thank you,   OS
  16.   CT is same as TN, a full POC for NICS, and puts more stringent conditions on gun purchases than just federal law. So does TN. It's just that theirs is already way more stringent than ours of course.   I guess it depends on how their state law is written as to what's necessary for changes in that area. Seems to me that here,  39-17-1316 would have to be amended to allow something like linking to the no-fly list as a condition, couldn't be done by EO.   Andrew Cuomo was ranting about that this morning, but seemed to say that they'd need to pass something through legislature to enable that rather than by EO. Which after SAFE I guess wouldn't be very difficult to ram through in a hurry.   Of course, so far, the feds haven't made the database available to the states, but I guess it will.   - OS
  17.   Seems right enough to me. Of course they still offer Single Six with and without the adjustable sights, they just don't identify them with different names, and they all come with both cylinders.   Obviously would be a plus to have the .22LR cylinder.   - OS
  18.   .357 rifle recoil is quite benign, certainly significantly less than a 20 gauge.   - OS
  19. In what "community" is this happening? Sounds like out in the county?   - OS
  20.   There was no link when Dave posted, only the stated scenario -- I saw it about same time and wondered the same.   - OS
  21.   Well, it has kept the prisons full.   Of course now, there's an effort to ease up on lots of the drug crime judicially. Which would make room in the prisons for us gun owners I guess.   - OS
  22. As I understand it, before the New Model, the Super model simply indicated adjustable rear sight. It was only designated as such in catalog, as the word "super" wasn't ever on the frame itself.   And yeah, the mag cylinder having the serial number would seem to indicate that it was either convertible model or that someone had it fitted with extra .22mag factory cylinder after the fact, as a .22mag only model apparently was always designated on the frame as such, and if that were the case the cylinder wouldn't probably have been marked at all.   - OS
  23. Far enough into the future, if we still have government, probably any of them. :ugh:   - OS
  24. Of course it is. Half of them don't understand that and the other half simply won't admit it, even after Manchin-Toomey (which was too lax for most liberals though)     There really are only a few things that are illegal: - Prohibited persons buying guns - Folks selling guns without a license who indeed really are in the business of doing it - Folks from other states buying or selling guns - Folks knowingly selling guns to prohibited persons/residents of another state/minors - Folks knowingly selling and/or receiving stolen firearms That's really about it, isn't it, except for NFA stuff which would have to be uber rare if it happens anywhere at all around gun shows. - OS
  25.   I also mentioned that the latest data is almost 20 years old, and wondered about applicability today.   Also, even then, I didn't see any data about length of time the respondents had been already served when interviewed, so  x number of cons they surveyed might have been already 10 years or more in stir, so dunno how contemporary that info was even then.   - OS
