Either way, two things are certain: it will probably not make much of a difference (zombie reference to come in a moment), considering that criminals don't really care about laws anyway and we'll still have Mayor Daley. Mayor Richard Daley today rejected the idea that the Supreme Court is likely to overturn the city's gun ban, but said that he will be ready to act quickly to put in place restrictions on gun ownership if it does. It's defeatist to prepare new gun laws ahead of the court's ruling, which should come before the body recesses at the end of June, Daley said. "You have to have confidence in the Supreme Court, Maybe they'll see the light of day," Daley said at a City Hall news conference. "Maybe one of them will have an incident and they'll change their mind over night, going to and from work." The mayor said if the court overturns the Chicago ban, as expected, he'll quickly present new legislation to the City Council. He also said that the handgun ban has been "very effective," but that's evidently not true, unless you consider that the violence in Chicago could get worse. Laws don't make things just disappear - even behaviors - and Chicago is a shining example of how gun laws don't seem to make guns disappear. This is particularly true when a city has a gun ban and that city is connected to cities without a gun ban, in other states such as Indiana, via public transportation. Think of it as a zombie situation. If the problem is zombies and your solution is to draw a line around yourself in the dirt and call it a "zombie free zone," you're probably not going to remain undead for very long, because the zombies don't really care that you've declared yourself a zombie free zone and will proceed accordingly. Same with criminals. The worst part of this situation is, of course, that you are left helpless because you used an ineffective method of protection. Now, this is not to say that guns are good. They're not. Ensuring people have the proper understanding and take the proper care of their firearms is essential, and exercise responsibility with power is only common sense. Reasonable restrictions are fine. A registry may be necessary. But outlawing guns puts law-abiding people at a significant disadvantage, because guns are dangerous. And if you don't believe me, or Mayor Daley - as one reporter dared - well, then, Mayor Daley would be happy to provide you with a demonstration. During the news conference, Daley reacted with the help of a prop when a reporter suggested the city's handgun ban has been ineffective, given the number of shootings that still occur in Chicago. "It's been very effective," Daley said, picking up a gun from the dozens displayed on a nearby table. "If I put this up your butt, you'll find out how effective it is. Who was the first? Only one I know is MidTennChip. Anyway, finally found the pertinent "State vs Souder", and indeed she was convicted of possession of switchblade. Found in her home. Although of Primary reason for charge and reason for the search to begin with was pot. Was appealed and confirmed. There were 4 counts involved, of which the switchblade was one. Sentenced to 11/29, concurrent for all charges. So question remains, was TCA same in 2005 as it is now in this matter? If so, did lawyer even argue the switchblade part as TCA at least now states, or just let it slide since she was gonna get the year regardless? Dunno. I'll say on the switchblade part, though, if TCA was same then, and she wanted to contest it, and if he didn't, it was either that it didn't matter and/or part of the best deal he could get her, or he was quite poor at the job. - OS
