  1. Haven't shot either of mine in a while, but Mike.357 had his (carbine). So I felt safe. :-) - OS
  2. Most of our members over there seem to feel that the safest thing about Oak Ridge IS when they leave it. - OS
  3. ... goin' to the Norris range with some of The Usual Suspects, including a rare appearance from hkusp40cal. I even took a nice summer shower along with me, which cooled things off nicely. - OS
  4. Our "two party" system became tyranny some time back, but this administration has added absolute lunacy on top of it. Hell, with the various boycotts and whatnot, and now this sort of thing from O, it's almost like AZ is being PUSHED to secede. I swear, it's as if Washington has been overtaken by the Pod People, it's become truly beyond the pale. - OS
  5. Me too. Well, with any luck and donations for a good lawyer, he could get flogged lightly with "temporary insanity" defense. - OS
  6. I tell you, some vet or distraught relative is eventually gonna come unglued at one of these protests and pop a cap or something at these Westboro loons, just wait and see. - OS
  7. OT Note: you could always edit your own post, not new, JFYI. - OS
  8. Cool, I actually mostly get that. Thanks. Btw, only real slight grump I seem to have right off, is the different pale orange color for "hot" topics, whether containing posts or not. Just a distraction for me, thinking that the two colors gray/blue for "no new posts" or "contains new posts" is plenty, can tell if a topic is "hot" by seeing multiple pages or looking at topic posts/views number. Might be just me. - OS
  9. You haven't really HAD an experience with a semi-auto until you've loaded and fired one, changed mags, etc. Really. Also there are 7 shot semi-autos actually thinner and as small or smaller than the smallest revolvers, if size is a prime issue. They have advantage of quicker reloading, unless you are a world class revolver handler. Of course, if you have found yourself in a close quarters gunfight where you have to reload, well, odds are you WON'T be reloading at all. See point 3 above. I think I can safely speak for others enough to say that those of us who carry semi-autos have put enough rounds through them, and especially tested enough of the specific rounds we carry for self defense, that we have complete confidence that they will run as well as any gun made. Of course I myself would not carry a gun that I didn't completely trust to go boom. And boom + 13 after that.Yes, on a bad round (one that doesn't fire) a revolver simply allows you to pull the trigger again. However, the odds of a misfire with commercial center fire ammo is very very very low. Even with low end "range" ammo, the misfire rate is so low as to be negligible and with quality personal defense ammo, so low as to be practically non-existent. And no, revolvers aren't foolproof, and CAN (very rarely) malfunction/jam. A common cause is shooting full power rounds with light bullet weights in an "airweight" (light, alloy) revolver, where the bullet comes unseated from the rest of the cartridge with recoil and jams against the cylinder casing, preventing cylinder rotation and firing the next round. Obviously, the simplest gun to operate is indeed a revolver, however. Firearms, like most things in life, are always a tradeoff. Capacity, caliber, functionality, personal ergonomics, etc. etc. Shoot a bunch of guns, find one that speaks to you and go with it. Likely it won't be your last one, anyway! I advise .38 special or larger in revolver (you'd carry .38 +p) and 9mm or larger in semi-auto. Personally,I love revolvers, shot my Blackhawk .357 at the range today, and also have a Ruger SP101. But for various reasons I carry an XD 9mm Sub Compact (see avatar) or a Kahr PM9 in the pocket. Welcome aboard TGO. - OS
  10. Yep, always use cardboard box too. Helps disguise it from potential theft, if nothing else. You can make one out of other boxes, just cut them to shape and tape the crap out of it, doesn't have to be neat. - OS
  11. I'm pretty intrigued with that graphic on the top period, from design/coding standpoint. I see it's made with 3 .png files, but the middle one, and the middle one only, resizes depending on window width ... never seen that before to my knowledge, will have to see if I can figger from code how that works. 'Preciate your long hours, as always, David! - OS
  12. 12 rounds at each of those distances Last 12 rounds is at instructor's choice. - OS
  13. Well, the requirements actually don't compute, period. You shoot 48 rounds and need 70%. That means you need 33.6 hits. I guess the .6 could be one that is pretty close. - OS
  14. Yes. This is federal law. He can even get a TN HCP. This under TN law. - OS
  15. Oh, I dunno. You could make an equally persuasive argument that laws that address basic human behavior like murder and theft are not morally based at all, since they go back much further back than even Hebrew law. Every society that we know of had them, and similar ones like property ownership, marriage, etc, likely because they were proven to be the most practical way to keep a society intact AS a society, regardless of the governing style. Indeed, the very first real civilization we know of, Sumer, had basic similar laws, and they didn't even have a culturally consistent set of Gods, but rather each village had their own. And yet even there, fairly consistent laws became universal. In that sense, laws did not emerge from morality, but rather, morality emerged from the evolution of the best practical ways for individuals to behave in order to form a society that was safer than living as isolated smaller units. - OS
  16. Multiple replies VERY handy for getting local folks together to shoot, which some of here do pretty much weekly. - OS
  17. I have asked the same question. Definition of a federal building from federal code: "The term "Federal facility" means a building or part thereof owned or leased by the Federal Government, where Federal employees are regularly present for the purpose of performing their official duties." I guess a "federal employees" are "regularly present" to clean up the bathrooms? Then again, maybe this is contracted out to non-federal company. Who knows? Weapons laws are grayer than most. - OS
  18. Well, good point. I wonder if "a person's place of business" " has ever been defined? Like, owner, manager, or in extended connotation, even just an employee? The "owner" probably is not present very often at many, if not most, businesses. It's not in the definitions part of the weapons statute, but may be defined elsewhere in TCA, dunno. But regardless, the extended concept of a person " who is the employee or agent of the owner of the premises with responsibility for protecting persons or property; " is gone. - OS
  19. Ah, good catch. I wasn't paying any attention 10 years and more ago. - OS
  20. Carry in federal buildings has not changed, still banned. Federal buildings may or may not have postings. Post offices generally don't, for example. - OS
  21. Correct. "39-17-1305. Possession of firearm where alcoholic beverages are served" has been entirely deleted. - OS
  22. Never heard of a "verbal declaration" in any statute. - OS
  23. Yeah, still a small presence, but to my knowledge would be carrying international shipments -- they filed bankruptcy on US operations good while back, and stated they were shutting it all down. Maybe they still have contract work here, I don't really know. Haven't received or seen DHL as an option from anyplace in couple years now, myself. Kinda hard to tell from quick look at their website, but it seems to only mention international. - OS
  24. Yeah, they've come north like the fire ants. Nah, definitely venomous. Bushmaster, I'd recognize one anywhere. So to OP, keep an eye out for them murderous panthers, too. - OS
