I assure you, "marriage" or actually "pairing" was instituted long before there was any widely shared concept of "God". It was a tribal more, dictated by practicality of getting children to adulthood for survival of the group. Happened at the very onset of homo sapiens about 200,000 years ago, or we wouldn't be here. Though there was certainly a variety of social ritual involved with the mating depending on culture and time frame, injecting some sort of religious sanctity on top of it certainly didn't occur in any widespread way until Jewish culture, certainly less than 4,000 years ago (which was also the first real widespread belief in "one god instead of many"). "Marriage" has always been a social/civil ethic fomented from the logical end of group survival since Oog first conked Oona on the head and humped her. - OS

alcohol...carry, but not on person

Indeed. .04 is driving under influence for anyone driving a commercial vehicle, at least with a CDL. And CDL is revoked, first instance. - OS -
So only Christians could marry under your guidelines? Maybe let Jews in, too? - OS

Absolutely. Have said many times that this is another of the reasons we have lost a national ethos in the US. Folks have no vested interest, not even a sawbuck's worth. It's also the reason that it won't be your grandfather's Depression this time around. The "me" rather than "us" syndrome would cause great disruption this time around, including significant mortality rates. People will not stand in "bread lines" this time around, even if there are any. - OS

Immaterial now anyway, way too late for that. But great info, I knew nothing about that ruling. - OS

Yeah, but that's for visitors. TN is much the same, you must get a TN permit here after 6 months' residency, even though you may have an out of state permit. The Georgia Packing page, under Carrying Weapons/Long Version, says: "f. If you have a license to carry from a state that honors the Georgia Weapons Carry License, as long as you are not a resident of Georgia and you follow Georgia laws while you are here." I don't know myself, just quoting. I'd find the pertinent GA statues, myself. Another question is when does one become a GA resident? TN is immediate upon intention, some states have a time period, though. And you must get a GA DL before gun permit? Must you apply for permit in county of residence? What if you are staying somewhere temporarily etc. Must say that it seems counter-intuitive to me for GA to deny you to carry for 3 months or so having a valid permit from a state with which they have reciprocity. - OS

Tried it once with some folks in my youth. Kept thinking of all the whopper snapping turtles I'd seen. And also, like WD's reference, already had been spined and finned a good bit, too. Not for me. - OS

Ah thanks. Somehow this whole part of federal law wasn't really in my database. Now it is: Defense of Marriage Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - OS

Thanks for chiming in. What marriage act is that? Something in military regs? - OS

Yep. If SS had actually been run as the untouchable trust as designed instead of being dumped in the overall budget, the D.C. spending addiction would have been severely curtailed all these years, AND would undoubtedly have provided the pay out benefits on a revenue neutral basis. Actually, would probably be well in the black even after the baby boomers have all passed. - OS

Be realistic. The church is going to handle alimony, child support, division of property, etc when marriages fail? Anyway, wishing it so changes nothing. In the meantime, since marriage figures prominently in both state and federal code, the primary rights question remains: who is allowed to be married, and who is not? Matter of fact, and I don't know the answer, does the federal government recognize the same sex marriage that is now legal in 5 or 6 states for the purposes such as I mentioned in my earlier post? (Social Security survivor benefits, military spousal benefits, Medicare, being able to file taxes jointly, etc.) - OS

I have no idea of actual Georgia law but according to Georgia Gun Laws in Plain English on GeorgiaPacking.org other states' permits are only honored if you are not a Georgia resident. - OS
-
Well, well and good, but it would take federal legislation to accomplish that. As it is now, the federal government only recognizes marriage for consideration of the federal matters I listed. - OS

Only by gutting the big three: SS, Medicare/Medicaid, and military. Discretionary spending is less than 20% -- you could nuke all of that and still take a century to erase the debt. Hell, soon the interest on the debt alone will be equal to half of all discretionary spending. - OS
-
The debt can only EVER be paid off in one way: by inflating the USD so that creditors actually receive a small fraction of the original principal in actual monetary value. Obama and Geithner are working on that fast as they can. Expect dramatic results soon. - OS
-
It's a national equal rights issue, not just a local one. Marriage affects all kinds of federal matters, Social Security survivor benefits, military spousal benefits, Medicare, being able to file taxes jointly, etc. Forget moral, it's a real world issue. - OS

Outdoor ranges are best for newbies as many find the concussion and claustrophobic nature of indoor ranges disconcerting; actually, I do myself. However, OP says he needs to rent some guns. - OS

Well, TN allows you 6 months of residency before you must have a TN carry permit, in which time an out of state permit is okay, assuming it hasn't expired. Perhaps GA also has some buffer like that? - OS

http://handgunlaw.us does a good job of staying current. so does http://tennessee.gov/safety/handgun/reciprocity.htm but handgunlaw has more info in general. - OS

LexisNexis (michie.com) Has Changed
Oh Shoot replied to Oh Shoot's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Yeah, I don't either, thought it was sorta implied in the initial wording though: "Our new public access platform contains all of the content previously available, and offers improved presentation and research functionality that more closely resembles our flagship Lexis.com product." My prob is navigation: links on left don't open in a frame on right, simply replaces page, and there is no right click "open in new tab/page" either. Then when you go back, it skips back a whole level so you have to reopen entire title. EDIT: It behaves differently in IE and Firefox. In IE it goes back just the one step, goes back two in Firefox. - OS -
Technically, "reciprocity" and "recognition" are not the same. For carrying permission purposes however, they might as well be. Missouri is like TN in that they recognize all other state's permit, although there is not a formal agreement of reciprocity between the two states. - OS
