I Don't Think GOP Can Beat the Press
Oh Shoot replied to Oh Shoot's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
The news divisions of NBC/CBS/ABC have often run at a deficit throughout the years, but the networks overall always make money, so they are subsidized from other parts of the operation. One may speculate that this is because they are actually in the Dems' pocket one way or another, or simply because they see it necessary to keep their news divisions no matter what to show overall public good will and "seriousness" of purpose. Even though 90% of what they big 3 present is purely fantasy/entertainment/sports, sports commanding the biggest overall revenues, last time I noticed. They are BIG, with a 75 year history of ingraining into the US culture, and will take a bit longer yet to be eroded to the point of failure, at least as far as their news divisions are concerned; entertainment and sports, probably never. The morning "news" shows have already transitioned to 50% pap, rather than news. Then again, much like the Democrat party itself, the worse things get, the more the traditional networks may thrive overall, in that more and more folks drop extended cable and go back to the basic packages, or at worst, rabbit ears. So they may actually grow overall in viewership in bad times, just like handouts from the political admin expand its voter base. - OS -
I've become convinced that there's just no way to beat BHO because there's just no way to beat the press. Can't find stats but I'd opine that at least 40% of likely voters get the majority of their "news" coverage from ABC/NBC/CBS. Add that to the rest of the built-in Dem base, and he becomes a lock. Though the big three have leaned left for decades, since they anointed BHO in '08, they've become so far left that you need binos to even see them clearly. I've been watching the daily 30 minute national indoctrinations a bit more lately, and a little more CNN too. It's really disheartening -- the constant leftish nudge has become a blatant sledgehammer. The only neutral coverage at all is for the non-political fluff pieces, bread and circuses. I'm not kidding when I say the majority of news coverage has become just an extension of the USA Progressive State. Very much like Itar-Tass in Mother Russia. While I do agree that the two party system has become joint tyranny, even the minor distinctions offered by what remains of conservatism are being successfully extinguished, and I see no foreseeable changes in that until The Big Pain that effects everyone, including the liberal talking heads. Moderators for the first debate have been announced, btw. Left and far left only. Watch the softballs they'll serve up. It'll be a miracle if Mitt will be able to rise above the script they'll lay out. - OS

That is the "blade". The statute doesn't say "sharpened part of blade" or "sharp edge" or "cutting edge" or some such. AFAIK, no state with a length law has such a definition. England does, however. - OS

Not "correcting" you at all, but that's the very first time I've ever heard such an interpretation of 1310. I would assume the intent of that law, is that one would have to possess the weapon in accordance with other statutes, which would mean loaded is fine in case of HCP holder, unloaded in case of non-HCP holder, but in neither case would one be guilty of carrying on school property, as long as the heater stays in the car. As a matter of fact, would assume that to be the case in 1309, too, except that it makes such a clear distinction between the "intent to go armed" paragraph and the almost identical one, but without that wording, and only in that one does it allow the adult non-student to stash a firearm. At any rate, I'm assuming that if one has to exit the vehicle to pick up their kid, obviously the gun must stay in the car, but I don't assume that under 1310 it has to be unloaded at any point at all under the intent of that statute. Now, if you to park your vehicle and go in for any other reason than simply retrieving your kid (like with having a confab with teacher or something), then I would think 1309 would take over, as 1310 is for the "sole purpose of delivering or picking up passengers". - OS

You'll need divine intervention for this one. - OS -
If I could afford it, I'd eat seafood most of the time. What is that I've outlined?

Ah so, thnx, "rigger" should have clued me, duh. I'd feel a little over-tacticooled wearing that around -- unless I carried some rope too, I guess. Beltman Bullhide has done very well for me. - OS -

What exactly does the secondary triangular dealie on model's left side accomplish? Can't find explanation on BH' site or anywhere else. -
Some people can look at an ID for a few seconds and remember everything on it, at least long enough to have a chance to write it down. No sense limiting the paranoia. - OS

After Weiner stepped on his own goober, she has become the most personally irritating person in Washington, even worse than Pelosi. Though her politics are loathsome, she'd grate on my nerves in a personal sense if she were a conservative Republican, she's that bad. Doesn't look like even an outside chance to unseat her though, population is a Dem wet dream: "Florida's new 20th district voting age population is 48.9% non-Hispanic Blacks (includes multirace), 29.5% non-Hispanic Whites (single race), 17.4% Hispanic (excludes Hispanic Blacks), 1.2% Hispanic Blacks (includes multirace), and 3.1% other races (non-Hispanic)" - OS -
The statute that allows non-student adult to keep gun in auto does not require HCP, doesn't even mention it. That, and the fact that it is not in the almost identical paragraph that mentions "intent to go armed", would seem to indicate the firearm must be in unloaded condition. Which means that ammo must be well separated. In other words, the HCP makes no difference in 39-17-1309. Matter of fact, it doesn't in 39-17-1310 either (pickup/dropoff passengers) as far as charge of carrying on school property is concerned, only that you'd be guilty of unlawful carry period under another statute assuming the gun was loaded. Btw, probably terms of employment at TN colleges probably include no firearms (certainly it is a cause for termination at UT, can't remember is ammo is mentioned specifically also) -- so if somehow push ever came to shove, you could be fired for the gun in the car even if not guilty of breaking any TN statutes. Guess that would be determined by your status, relations with superiors, politics, etc, like most jobs. You live on campus as an employee? If so, no advice. With a gun in the house, you'd be legal under 1308 but illegal under 1309, a interesting gray area perhaps, but I'd imagine that the latter prevails. I don't know if students get criminally charged for having guns in their dorm rooms, or just expelled. I guess whatever legal precedent there is for that, you could be treated the same. Short take is, I don't see any good things happening if you're caught with gun in car or residence. Or maybe just caught with ammo, from the school's point of view at least, though if you kept everything in the car only, ammo and gun well separated, you shouldn't be subject to criminal charge as I understand the statute. Last edit: This is not legal advice. - OS

I'll often stick in a vote for the XD in these type threads: Have three original XD 9 models. - I shoot them better than any other semi I own. - I can shoot a Glock about as well using sights, but Glocks don't point as well for me. - I like the tactile/visual LCI and cocked indicators. - I like the grip safety, another margin of safety when reholstering, and it's practically a contortionist's act to grip the gun to fire without activating it, takes much less pressure than the average 1911 even. - The subbie model 13+1 capacity seems like magic - OS

After calling Monday with no info forthcoming, and phone call promised, called back today (Wed), said "issued yesterday". For me at least, it's the same ole dysfunctional process as it was 4 years ago. Will be 3.5 months since I got acknowledgement letter, and seems if I had never called it would never have been issued. - OS

Haven't killed anything except fish since my 20's, but most folks I see opine seem to think .44 mag is fine within say 100 yards, maybe another 25 or so more with Hornady Leverevolution. - OS

Yep, supply has not kept up with demand for quite a few years. You can always find Marlin .30-30 and often .44 just at Wally's for way under MSRP, but any .357 generally goes for MSRP at the least. Hell, even used ones sometimes do. 'Bout the only place I see new ones available is on GunBroker, where they get a premium. - OS

Breaking: Paul Ryan chosen as Romney VP
Oh Shoot replied to plank white's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
He's giving the keynoter at the GOP convention. So he's yet the darling of the party, which never care's whether a pol's actual practice conflicts with GOP stated principles, as long as he's worth votes. - OS -
So I called yesterday. Gal couldn't give any reason why it hadn't been issued, said would have to refer it to someone else. Supposed to call me. Nada yet. I'm always on the outer edges of life's bell curves though. Original permit took right at 3 months, seems only phone calls and emails shook it loose even then. - OS

I admit your right to your own semantics. - OS

All states have held their primaries. However messy (or likely not) the convention could be, the GOP candidate is nonetheless a foregone conclusion, short of his croaking or something. In which case it still won't be RP. - OS
