macgyver-isms and the gun hobby.
Oh Shoot replied to vujade's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Here's a "gunsmithing" one. The trigger cross pin in one of my 10/22's keeps creeping out to one side just enough to where trigger starts failing to reset. Polymer housing so I can't stake it. Tried locktitle, doesn't grab on the polymer. Don't really want to use epoxy or something. Friend suggested fingernail hardener. So far so good, looks like it's gonna work. - OS -
Question about selling an automatic knife on this forum
Oh Shoot replied to Joe86's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
Clearly you'd be in trouble in NYC where the cops reportedly try very hard to make knives open with wrist flips. Common sense would suggest that here, somebody would have to really have an axe to grind to sting ya for that, but I suppose anything is possible. Certainly no legal advice from moi. - OS -
Question about selling an automatic knife on this forum
Oh Shoot replied to Joe86's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
Just because it "can" wouldn't seem to matter as long as it "can" open "automatically" too. From 39-17-1301 ---------- "Switchblade knife" means any knife that has a blade which opens automatically by: (A) Hand pressure applied to a button or other device in the handle; or ( Operation of gravity or inertia ----------- So "gravity knives" like balisongs are considered switchblades here also. This pretty much follows the federal definition also; most states that ban them have almost same wording. The status of assisted openers has been clarified in federal statute and states have gone along with that also. I don't know of any state where assisted openers are considered illegal on that basis alone, although as always one could run into a LEO who doesn't understand or care about the distinction. - OS -
Reread, I used "milk toast" as describing the electorate, and Romney best suited to it. And good on you for the proper usage of the term, it's rare I blow it that badly here, and even rarer to get caught. My point was that the GOP needed something at least perceived as very different (yet somehow appealing to that non-polarized segment of the electorate) this time around to have a chance. Youth seemed like perhaps the most obvious effective tactic, at least for the top spot; with perhaps an older hand as veep (worked for BHO) and what better than a black female to counter the also perceived "diversity" of the Dems. Maybe there will be an October Surprise the GOP can unveil that will change everything, but failing that, BHO gets four more years (at least! ). Just too many negatives with Mitt, and Ryan can't change that. - OS

Class A Misdemeanor. Same for knuckles. - OS -
Well, If you don't want to strain your eyes, current made models won't say North Haven, CT on the barrels either, I don't reckon. Who has a Remlin, btw, do they show Ilion, NY? Mayfield, KY? - OS
-
Yes. Both my Marlin 336 and 1894 (in .357 mag) have a lot of play when open. Both made at the original Marlin factory. The 1894 has the most. I'd opine that the Remlins may not have the fit/finish that the older ones do, but even the Marlins made a number of years before the move from the New Haven plant had fallen off in this regard too, at least according the Marlinite hard core. On the other hand, they are still perfectly functional and minor cosmetic diffs are likely only noticeable by side by side comparison. Few lines of traditional rifles have the same degree of deep bluing of their ancestors. Hell, many are now "painted", not blued at all, like Ruger 10/22. Doesn't mean they're still not a fine rifle, and as good as it gets for the money. All lever guns will smooth out with use. Some folks sit around and rack them a thousand times while watching tube or whatever. The birch stocked 336("w" I guess) that Wally sells is a fine buy and the rifle should serve you well. A new 336W is the same rifle no matter where you buy it. You can study up on all this at MarlinOwners.com - OS

Dunno where you hear that, it's a finely textured G-10, seems fine to me. I only have black, but assume all the colors are same material? - OS

Man arrested for legally open carrying...
Oh Shoot replied to Murgatroy's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
He would have been breaking the law to have followed the LEOs order to cover the gun. Then he could have been arrested for a charge that would stick. Very likely more transpired, though. - OS -
Who is going to lead the ban on katanas
Oh Shoot replied to zapfbroad's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
That is correct, except it's "4 inches or under", not "under 4 inches". With exceptions for outdoor activities and whatnot. There is no bladed instrument that is illegal to own in TN. Even switchblades have built-in "curio, ornament or keepsake" exception. Which is why anyone can openly buy them at every gun show in TN. - OS -
That's why he's playing such a prominent role in the GOP push I suppose. Anything "Bush" is anathema, and Jeb knew it too, or was by gawd told. McCain's involvement will just remind the electorate that Mitt is the man who lost to the man who lost to Obama. I'm thinking none of the players that competed from Iowa on could win this time. None. Mitt is the likeliest for the overall milk toast electorate, but there's no magic there. At all. Maybe a total change, even a couple of "unknown" young folks, like a Rubio/Jindal, Rubio/Ryan, or something wacky like somebody/Rice, could have done it, "hope and change" from the other side. I predict a BHO victory, but not by a clear mandate, so we'll have the most divisive country since the 1860's. I'll predict a leftish swing in both Houses too by 2014, as the GOP will be seen as obstructionist as things don't improve, assuming they can get the have-nots to turn out. It'll also mean a Dem stranglehold on the presidency for the foreseeable future, since as things go more south, the Dem voter base increases. Until the money won't buy stuff. - OS

Have become quite enamored of my CS American Lawman. If I wanted under 3", I'd consider the Mini Lawman. Nothing stronger in folders than Demko's Tri-Ad lock. CS does AUS8 very well, too. Less than half your max budget. A nice American made option is the small Vantage series, uses Buck's legendary 420HC steel, the fine Sandvik 13C26, or S30V with GRN, PaperStone, Dymondwood,. or G10 grip. Priced dirt cheap to reasonable depending on steel/grip choice. The basic model is a real steal at around 20 clams, and the highest end model is only a little over half your budget. Disadvantage of sub 3-inchers: don't know of any that have full grip, which reduces how much force you can get on them for heavier cutting, even though most of the blades are well up for it. - OS

Russia has traditionally handled dissidents who got too much notice by putting them in asylums. This is the scary analogy. - OS -
Will steel cases speed up wear of chamber?
Oh Shoot replied to Luke E.'s topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Also conjecture, nothing exists but anecdotes. You can, of course, find anecdotal "evidence" to support damn near anything. And just for some more, the only case rim I've torn through myself was a steel .223 round, with a Mini14. Which likely would happen with brass case also vs. aluminum. - OS -
Illinois making progress one small county at a time...
Oh Shoot replied to zapfbroad's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Yeah, I don't think the IL state political machine is going to be much fazed by what a temporary DA espouses in Bloomington. - OS -
In case you change your mind about the post. Welcome back, have missed the fireworks. - OS

Oh Shoot replied to zapfbroad's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Not illegal to ship into TN in any way. Some places "interpret" TN law and refuse to ship much of anything here over 4" blade though, Like Sportsman's Guide. Includes machetes, but "kitchen" knife seems okay from their POV. - OS -
Carbine. Any standard carbine length will fit it. - OS

I still haven't found any ribs as good as Scruggs'. But they don't cater. Probably don't know what that means. - OS

Oh, I remember The Great Communist Water Fluoridation Plot type talk. I believe Cas Walker espoused that in his fight against doing it here in the 60's. - OS -
It's an unnecessary overlay on top of NICS, doing badly what not be done at all, a make work project for TBI at best, and a de facto state firearms tax - OS
