  1. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev now confirmed as American citizen, ironically naturalized on 9/11/12.
  2.   Well, I'm sure if anyone refuses, they'll just surround the house until they get a quick search warrant.   Maybe the Gov has even imposed whatever their version of "emergency powers" MA has, might not be even be needed, who knows.   And of course "everything is illegal in Massachusetts" already anyway.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBdpINm9UBU     - OS
  3.   Sorry, I stay out of the military "dual residence" stuff re firearms, too nuanced for my widdle brain.   I'd probably not deal without seeing a TN DL, but that's just my feeling for my own comfort zone.   - OS
  4.   It's disheartening though, in the same way defending against terrorism is, in the sense that with long term onslaught we have to win every time, and they only need to win once to inflict big damage.   - OS
  5. Well, the situation up there has gone ape. Some kind of officer killed on or near MIT campus as per this thread. Now 4 miles a way (maybe due to chase from MIT, maybe not) big gunfight and bombs exploded. One suspect in custody one on the loose, police going door to door in neighborhood. Definitely footage of guy spread-eagled on street. Reports are going wild of course, reported that FBI said he's one of the bombers, now another has said he's not, etc. One witness even says he saw one of the guys with a pressure cooker, probably just some neighborhood nut, who knows. And simultaneous to all this, FBI releases more close up pictures, best yet, of the two suspected perps. Update: now saying that FBI says guy on right is definitely one captured, guy on left is one on the loose. Take with grain of salt at this point, seems. Who knows, I'm going to sleep, y'all carry on as you wake up to reports before me. :) - OS
  6.   MSNBC is second  to FOX during prime time. Know the enemy.   - OS
  7. This is perhaps best one of all on FBI site. Profile shot, and a pretty distinctive honker, unless it's false. - OS
  8.   If you don't have anyone nearer/cheaper, up north of you Bill's Outpost in Alcoa is $25+TICS.   - OS
  9.   Oh, he's a peck better than any of the progressives out there, and the GOP can always do worse (just look at our last two candidates).   I'm just advising caution. These political shooting stars that rise on the American Idol premise alone without much of a track record can simply become flash without substance.   Or substance that reveals itself to be far different than the packaging. I mean, even I didn't have any idea as to the extent of socio-fascism BHO would manifest, and pretty much right out of the gate, too. Hell, I almost voted for him in Dem primary in '07 just to help forestall Hillary, who I thought would be the worst imaginable scenario. Silly me.   - OS
  10.   Sure was that way when I came up here in '68. But seems has become the most upscale part and Yankee-ized part of the area now. Maybe a unfair assessment.   - OS
  11. Farragut? I've always considered that to be Knoxville's California suburb.
  12.   Old timer BATF agents must giggle when they see intimidated opinions like that.   I repeat:   There is no federal or TN law that prohibits private selling, trading, or gifting long guns or handguns between same state adult residents (18 years old) who are not prohibited from owning firearms.     - OS
  13.   Guys could be wearing Guy Fawkes masks far as I could make out from the official FBI pix.   They'll likely get 'em, but will probably be from acquaintances knowing something about their movements or other suspect activities.   - OS
  14.   Well, no,  it doesn't prove that one way or the other.   The truth is that we do not have majority rule in the nation, beyond the elections themselves, and thank gawd for that. The Constitution is supposed to be adhered to, regardless of public opinion. If the majority of the people want to change that Constitution,  there is a process to do it.   Also, Senators, as opposed to Representatives,  are supposed to represent the best interests of the individual states, and not necessarily the majority opinion of the states' residents. Sometimes those coincide, sometimes not.   One other thing is that the Senate really does show the square off in state by state Red/Blue since unlike the House, each state gets two senators rather than x number of Reps based on population -- every state gets the same amount of clout in the Senate.   - OS
  15.   And you can even give or loan a pistol/long gun to a minor, "for lawful sporting purposes", but you can't sell it to him.   - OS
  16.   Yep, appreciate the confirmation.   Technically, though, 70% hits don't necessarily equal 70 points.   35 shots out of 50 that count is 70% hits but if they're not all in the 7 ring, wouldn't add up to 70 points, so wouldn't suffice, right?   - OS

  18.     I should probably have added: "except ProMags".   - OS
  19. Now narrowed down to two perps they're looking for as per vid evidence.   Ya know, if the guys were sharp, they would have disguised themselves pretty well?   - OS
  20.   Don't think there are any other "levels", except whatever you put in there yourself?
  21. Great day to watch MSNBC.  They've really been able to concentrate on the gun vote from yesterday, combination of vitriolic attack on Senate and crying in their beer.   Loving it.   - OS
  22.   Yeah, that's actually correct, sorry  -- somehow Schumer's S 374 that started it all was abandoned and they shifted to Reid's S 649 before they made the deal to hear all the amendments at one time. They show as "related bills" on Library of Congress site.   I ain't gonna compare the texts of the two, guessing they are about the same as topic sections are.   Anybody more studious than moi who wants to:   S 374 "Fix Gun Checks Act of 2013" (Schumer) http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d113:s.37:   S 649 "Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013" (Reid) http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d113:SN00649:       - OS
  23.   Can't answer those questions as above my pay grade on US Senate Procedure. :)   Irony is that I was TN Lieutenant Governor in HI-Y in high school, presided for 4 days over our state wide assembly in actual senate chamber Nashville. And had to study Roberts Rules of Order and TN legislative rules for months to get through it -- the only thing I can tell you is that those rules have little if anything to do with how these chambers are actually run anymore on state level, and the federal level is in ionosphere of bizarre protocol, many of which happen because they "suspend the rules" by a simple voice vote in the first place.   Can tell you that everything voted on yesterday is still "on the table" through end of 113th Congress (ends Jan. 3, 2015 but practically of course on the last day of 2014). It's my understanding that if reintroduced, the special deal for voting made on them is reset, and they start over, with filibuster action still in play. If filibuster fails (or not even tried), they can be enacted with simply majority vote. Or they can suspend the rules and majority/minority leaders make damn near whatever deal they want, just like yesterday.   Only bills/amendments which fail on a vote on their actual enactment  must wait until the next Congress to be re-filed and go through the whole committee process, but these having been technically tabled via failure of cloture are still "live" during this session, however remote (or not) the chances that the voting structure might change before end of session for them to be brought back up.   - OS   edit: one thing wrong in my post 50, Lester.   The "core bill" started as Schumer's S 374 "Fix Gun Checks Act of 2013" but shifted over to Reid's S 649 "Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013" by the time of all the action.
  24.   Yeah, but all the amendments were to Shumer's bill, S. 374.   Can't see how Reid's S.649 would even hit the floor at this point.   edit: never mind, see my post below, Shumer's bill was indeed abandoned at some point and they used Reid's instead by the time of the voting.   - OS
  25. I've been plastered there a couple times, back when. Great historic dive.   Got a Tootsie's hat somewheres.   - OS
