  1.   You'll see some of the smaller commercial ones now and then, like the Caldwell and Birchwood stuff.   Have seen a feller with some nice homemade heavy resetting ones too but not all the time.   - OS
  2. Um, not to be a bummer, but Spartacus and his army were totally destroyed, and the worst part was that it led to the generals that crushed it to become famous, and later emperors, ending the Roman Republic.   - OS
  3.   Dunno, they changed some stuff around not long ago, target size/distance, few other things I forget, maybe they're supposed to keep 'em now a documentation they ain't cheating or something.   - OS
  4.   Aw, just vote for Hidlebeest -- will give you extra griping rights until 2021 (at the least).   Hell, y'all might decide the election again down there, your vote could swing it!   - OS
  5.   Most already do it online, but still with paper 4473. This seems to be change to the e-form for the ones that don't do that already too, near as I can tell.   The mystery is why the delay at all. Guessing maybe syncing into central server or something, but can't tell from info so far.   - OS
  6. Lord knows we need it, eh? Atlantic storm season starting. Looks like will be quite damp all over the SE by next weekend.   /end good news   - OS
  7.   Actually, about 3 years and 5 months, brother. He's prez till Jan 20, 2017.   - OS
  8.   She performed on several local shows, but yeah, Cas' show was "biggest" one. She first sang on it at age 9!   - OS
  9. Btw, I kinda assume these are permits to purchase, which is required in CT, not permits to carry, but don't know for sure from the reporting.   Then again, you have to have a permit to purchase a long gun too, and they only mention handguns, so maybe these are for carry permits?   - OS
  10.   My guess is that very few folks who carry regularly stay with the same heater they started with, and many don't always carry the same one, either. Then there's also all the folks who carry two.   - OS
  11. CNN reports that through July 24, more than 200 people in Newtown have received new local pistol permits, surpassing the 171 new permits issued for all of last year.   CNN video included:   http://www.bizpacreview.com/2013/08/14/gun-grabbers-big-backfire-newtown-gun-sales-surge-since-shooting-81546   - OS
  12.   Well, since we are a majority Christian nation, at least on paper, I'd say that falls in the "other US interests", sure.   But mainly, Egypt has been a strategically important region for at least 3000 years, and that hasn't changed. In our modern times, and certainly since Israel formed in '48,  its relative non-alignment with anyone except partially to the US is one reason the Middle East has been as stable as it has been.   Given the land mass, population, and location,  if it enters a Syrian or Libyan type civil war, all bets are off, both during and after the dust settles.   - OS
  13.   Little problem regarding the Suez Canal there and the traditional stabilizing buffer for Israel, among other US interests.   - OS
  14.   The Web changed everything, but certainly not all for the better.   There are 56 million blogs on WordPress.com, most hosted for free.   - OS
  15.   It's just somebody's WordPress blog. Doesn't even identify himself.   - OS
  16.   No so bad really, it seems to have changed only in last 6 months or less.   - OS
  17.   David, all that stuff has changed. No breaks for any other states now. Same full drill for anyone moving here.   - OS
  18.   Illinois didn't do it, Dave, these were all federal charges.   Blago  too, he's doing time in CO.   The feds don't have all that great a conviction rate, but they seem to hold onto the ones that actually do get in their slammers.   - OS
  19.   Maybe, but the feds are pretty good about keeping their convicted folks in the slam. Ask Blago.   - OS
  20.   What's the question? Didn't get enough time, won't actually serve any of it, or what?   - OS
  21.   Spielberg at his entertaining best is just a big wide eyed movie fan kid, and he's said as much. There has always been a market for rip roaring pure entertainment and always will be -- message not needed. Jaws, ET, and the Indy flics will always stand within the pinnacle of that genre IMO.   Remember Duel? He burst on the scene with that low budget TV flick, but it so captured the imagination that it made him almost instantly famous, and gave him the clout to make and/or direct only what he wanted from there on, with very few hiccups along the way.   Oh, and btw speaking of stories, in Jaws, Quint's USS Indianapolis story within the story was quite the highlight I thought.   - OS
  22.   No, I just worked in the field, and have been ever the film buff. I just used "green screen" as generic term for special effects matting, the same principle seen with your local weatherman even today.   - OS
  23.   Yes, I conceded the budgetary reasons for Psycho being in the mix. However, the other three, not.   The Birds was filmed on color neg stock, not black and white. And looking further,  I can find nothing but anecdotal evidence that the film was ever actually released in black and white at all, including Hitch's supposed quote of it being "scarier".    So I'd say it's a confusion on the part of some regarding the black and white matting techniques that were used for the "green screen" special effects of the birds themselves, which was melded into the final color version.   As the editor sort of explains:   "Eventually the pair settled on what Hoffman calls a "coloring book" method. For every shot requiring birds, Hoffman made a black and white dupe. When the shot was completed, a color shot was substituted for the one in black and white. When the sequence was all in color, they knew it was complete. "With 412 outstanding shots to be kept track of, I'm amazed that the damn thing ever pulled together," Hoffman said."   So I'm highly skeptical now that the film was ever theatrically released in B/W at all, but only the Technicolor version.   I can find no clip or even still from the movie itself in B/W at all, except those from the B/W special effects layering.   Tech specs from IMDB:   Runtime 1 hr 59 min (119 min) Sound Mix Mono (Westrex Recording System) (uncredited) Color Color (Technicolor) Aspect Ratio 1.37 : 1 (negative ratio) 1.85 : 1 (intended ratio) Laboratory Technicolor, Hollywood (CA), USA (color by) (as Technicolor®) Film Length 3,280 m (Finland) 3,280 m (Sweden) Negative Format 35 mm Cinematographic Process Spherical Printed Film Format 35 mm   - OS
  24.   FFLs are specific by address. If you move your biz next door, you can't operate there until your FFL is updated to reflect the new address. I actually ran into prob with this personally regarding a glitch with Bill's Outpost when they moved.   The only place an FFL can transfer a firearm except from the specific address is at a gun show in same state.   - OS
