  1.   DOS comes to the rescue, I love it!   I used XCOPY in command prompt on a customer's crashed WIn box a couple of years ago to get off all the files on the drive of a certain type, something you simply can't easily do within Windows itself as easily even if it runs okay.   - OS
  2.   I'm thinking that most folks who will spend two bills on a 3rd party receiver are building a new gun from scratch rather than scavenging many parts from an old one.   I think you can now build a "10/22" without one Ruger part in it at all.   edit: hear that echo in here, Hozzie? ;)   - OS
  3.   I suspect some old timers at ATF giggle with how cowed a percentage of the gun community still is due to some of their strong arm tactics in the past.   And it does indicate to me a lingering culture of thuggery to not publicly admit settled law by the frigging Supreme Court until almost 20 frigging years after the fact. That's of course just my humble opinion, officer. ;)   - OS
  4.   Oh, I imagine it'll work out OK, but as you say, there's not a lot daily "hands on" anymore, mainly because it's not much needed and since members tend to single stuff out and notify mods, so it is largely self-policing, if somewhat delayed.   But yeah, to echo NRA37922, consistency is where rubber hits the road, and "equal enforcement" issues have certainly manifested in the past over even more clear cut policy (like just what extent constitutes a personal attack and etc).   But as I said, it's probably not that big a deal in way it'll work out,  but mainly just a question of exactly what's okay to start a thread with and what's not.   - OS
  5.   How can "no concrete guidelines", and "staff using their discretion in making judgment calls" be anything but "arbitrary"?   - OS
  6. Boy, it's just like day after Sandy Hook on the anti-gun hammering on MSNBC this afternoon, will continue on through prime time I'm sure.   Far as I know, the nut passed a background check in VA to get the shotgun, so I'm particularly sick of hearing about universal background check thing, and seems he may have not used an AR at all, or if he did, he didn't get it outside the building, so I'm sick of hearing about the assault weapon part too.   As we always knew, the yellowjacket nest is always there, just needs to be prodded at any time.   - OS
  7. Well, my initial take is that the guideline is largely hazier than the "no denigration of public figures by twisting their names around" directive (not enforced), or the original "no gouging in the Trading Post" proviso (dropped), but not quite as hazy as the "no proselytizing regarding religious matters" admonishment.   No offense, but saying "I can't give concrete guidelines, but we'll be asking staff to use their discretion in making these judgment calls"  sounds in the vein of Kathleen Sebelius making ongoing decisions about Obamacare, so I guess you'll have to pass the bill for us to find out what's in it. ;) ;)   - OS
  8. Well, that of course is entirely up to you, but:     My point was, if you have a pistol legal lower, and regardless of any other spare parts also have a complete AR rifle, you do have a "useful purpose other than to make an NFA firearm"  regarding the short barrel, as you have all the parts necessary to configure a legal pistol whether you actually wanted to make one or not.   There's nothing about "intent" in the rulings,  but merely what constitutes a legal assemblage of parts in close proximity. You have either made a NFA firearm or you have not.  If all pass possibility of legal usage test, then you're good. If not, you can be determined to have actually made an illegal NFA firearm, whether you actually physically did or not.   And yes, it's good not to treat this lightly, considering the possible penalty, no matter how remote. Full auto components aside, short barrel, stock, and vertical forward grip are the big three components one must consider in the AR realm.   - OS

  10.   Of course you can, as long as you have a lower that was not first built as a rifle and the other parts to make a pistol (which a built AR rifle would provide also). The "constructive possession" thing has been settled law for over 20 years -- basic tenet is simply that a part must have a (legal) "useful purpose other than to make an NFA firearm".   So as long as you have a way to use the barrel in a legal config, it's okay.     I don't get that. You can build your pistol exactly in the config you want your SBR, sans stock, and test and tweak it for reliability/performance beforehand.  And yes, including "rifle" buffer tube.  And still have it engraved before the stamp comes in. You can, of course, also have the stock in your possession too, as long as it also has a legal "useful purpose" on another firearm you have.   As far as AR pistols, full auto stuff aside, it always comes down to a stock or vertical forward grip. And even a VFG can be used on a pistol with a legal overall length of 26" or more. Of course one would be an idiot to be out and about with only a pistol and also a stock, or even with a pistol, rifle, and extra stock, that's just baiting the bear, a Kwik sort of thang.   But even at home, if all I owned was an AR pistol,  I wouldn't have a stock on my property at all, or a VFG if the thing was under 26".     - OS
  11.   Yup. If you want to get really technical about it, there is no length barrel specified for handgun under federal law, only the "fired with one hand thing", which no AR "pistol" is already.   So in that sense, as long as the stock is the last thing that goes on it after the barrel is added,  a "pistol" is built first with any AR config.   This is one  of those rules that might come into play if they already wanted to lean on you for something else; and they'd pretty much have to go back to manufacturer/distributor to determine what the original config was.   This came about from SCOTUS ruling in the Thompson Contender case in 1992, along with clarification of the "constructive possession" thing too.   So it's been settled law for over 20 years. But what many would say is keeping in with its typical bully form though, ATF only published their own grudging official ruling reflecting all that in summer of 2011.   - OS
  12.   Yep, MSNBC has of course hit it hot and heavy all of prime time. And a secondary rant on violent video games, to which he was addicted also, seems.   Btw, now it seems he used his own access card, still had legitimate access. Which is quickly turning into a background security check fail, since turns out he has had two arrests for gun related incidents.   Still no confirmation why he was discharged from Naval reserve, and there are also unconfirmed reports he has lost his job as subcontractor with Hewlitt Packard, so if that's true it's a double security fail, as shouldn't have had access.   - OS
  13.   It's my understanding that federal recall elections would have to dictated by federal election laws, and they have never been enacted, though it was first proposed in debates over the original Constitution.   - OS
  14.   TripeDigit has it correct.   1. We don't have registration in TN   2. As far as the 4473, since 8/2008, all lowers are to be transferred as "other firearm" on question 18 and "receiver" on question 29. Even if it is a complete lower, even if it has a stock on it, even if it's some kind of receiver that can only be built as a rifle.  It can't be a "long gun" or a "handgun" without a barreled upper on it. Note there are still some idiot FFLs around, so it's good to check 4473 to be sure, as they fill that part out after you fill out your part.   3. Federally, a virgin lower may be built as rifle or pistol. If it is built as a pistol first, it can go back and forth between pistol and rifle. If it begins life as a rifle, it must forever stay a rifle. This applies to used lowers also, btw, whether you know their history or not.   And incidentally, I'll probably use the TGO lower to replace the plastic fantastic Omni I have on my AR pistol.   - OS
  15. Well, they may feel the need something else in the works ... it's only a matter of time before Lincoln and/or Reedus want to move on. Rather doubt the series could survive without both of them, especially Daryl. Reedus probably most likely to leave, since he was already more in demand on the big screen than Lincoln.   - OS
  16. Biden's to blame after all, he told everybody to get a shotgun.   - OS
  17. Anybody pinged SMKW about it yet?   - OS
  18.   Just never really find one unless you buy a non-Ruger one. And most of those cost about as much as a whole basic carbine.   No matter how you modify a 10/22, who winds up with an spare receiver only? Especially since it is the actual firearm.   - OS
  19. There's not many factory parts you can get for any Mini, have to send them in.   But as far as I know, they'll still work on all series if it comes to it.   - OS
  20.   Now now -- looks just like a penis, only smaller. ;)  Regardless of extent of excitement though, it stays pretty much same distance from neck cause mine don't point straight up!   - OS
  21.   Yep, and apparently he breached it with just a Biden approved double barrel shotgun and a stolen access card.   - OS
  22. Interesting looking blade for sure.   How long is that thang -- looks like as a neck knife if would hang down to my goober! ;)   - OS
  23. Only horror stories I've heard about Ruger service, at least on TGO, was   - someone's saga about a refinish job that took forever and wasn't up to snuff when it was finally done.   - Dolomite's multiple disappoints with a Talo version couldn't get refinished and some other hassles with service there mostly regarding disinformation regarding threaded barrel and whatnot.   - OS
  24.   Dunno. Texas landlord mentioned he had gone to a Buddhist temple for a while. They're generally pretty peaceful folks.   Brooklyn native, wound up in Fort Worth due to Navy reserve, discharged in 2011.. Still unclear whether he was military contractor or civilian employee. Charged with illegally discharging firearm in 2010, went through apartment ceiling and almost hit upstairs neighbor, he said accidental while cleaning. Etc.   And half of all that may not be correct, you know how this stuff evolves.   - OS
  25.   $800 or less for a nice serviceable mid range config, and you can come out with a generally better rifle than complete ones in same general price retail.  Component prices are getting pretty close to pre Sandy Hook, just not as widely available just anywhere at any time.   You can finish up lower with parts kit for about $60 and a serviceable buffer tube/stock assembly for about the same.   Then simplest way is to find a complete upper and just slap it on. Palmetto State Armory is always a good place to catch a sale on solid mid range stuff with quite good FN made barrels. Changing to quad rails isn't too expensive for basic handguard config, can get pricy for free floated though. Dunno about that 16" rail though, basic mounting lengths are 6.5" for carbine, 8.6" for middy, and 12" for rifle. Mid length gas system my fav, very nice for several reasons.   Anyway you wind up saving at least a couple hundred bucks going this route from buying a complete new rifle with same specs.   Irony has always been that even if you don't want to install a single spring or pin, you can generally save a c note or more by merely buying a complete lower and a complete upper rather than exact same complete rifle from same vendor and simply mate them.   - OS
