There hasn't been a 40% turn out of eligible voters even in the national midterm elections/primaries since 1972. Even presidential elections haven't hit 60% since 1968. Stupidity or apathy? Is apathy stupidity? Would the results really change if suddenly there were a 75% turnout in all elections, or would it tend to be even more liberal nowadays? - OS

Thanks, yeah I remember that now. - OS

That was a most excellent one hour special on him, btw, hope it's archived somewhere? His transition from liberal to conservative over his earlier years is quite the lesson, using logic rather than emotion, and especially seeing politics as he does, as the necessary engine from which a society either moves ahead or stagnates and fails. He's been a "power player" for quite some time on FOX. I imagine they'd give him his own show if he wanted it. - OS

All three of the common twists do fine on the 55 and 62. If you shot a lot of light fast bullets rather than the heavier ones, you'd almost certainly be better off with a 1:9, as most all "varmint" configs are. - OS

Whether they are "legal" or not, I have never seen statutorily compliant signage at a TN gun show. Never. Not once. Ah,so that really wasn't your point. "now this" had nothing to do with carry. What was the Kimber incident? Was it at a gunshow? Person carry it in there under a permit? - OS
-
Seems to me the gun seller is at the greatest fault. Besides the obvious of checking them first, guns are also supposed to be zip locked in such a fashion that they can't be cocked/fired. You can't expect everyone who wanders into a place with 10 thousand guns to be an exemplar of firearm handling safety. I doubt seriously the "anti-gunner" theory, especially if true that this was a tube fed rifle, and with extra rounds in it. - OS

You figure a routinely concealed handgun has a greater likelihood of going off at a gun show than a McDonald's? - OS

I've probably read everything Dolo has ever written, and get some verbal advice besides. :) Just never heard him state that one before. And I do know the general correspondence between twist and weight (actually length) in 5.56. That's why I was asking, as my understanding is there's pretty much equal reasons for some to select 1:7 and some 1:9. Though I don't understand why 1:8 isn't more common as a standard "do all" twist. - OS

Surely sounded like he was on phone to someone, seemed to be responding to what they said. I thought the background noise was TV or something. - OS

I don't understand, Vontar, that was somebody during a call, not a voice message. How did it get to your message center? - OS

Not grokking that either, especially if you want to shoot over 62gr bullets? I mean, whole 5.56 AR world is mostly 1:7 or 1:9, with a smattering of 1:8. - OS

6 People signed up for ACA on Day 1
Oh Shoot replied to Hozzie's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I've played with it since day one. Even when it's been up, it's been down. Two nights ago I was finally able to actually make an account that would actually let me log in. But trying to go through the drill (was gonna pretend I was 64 instead of 65), just an endless loop back to login screen. You CAN see the plans now, with no account at all. With the nag on every screen that one you almost certainly get your free Obama Bucks Subsidy, the actual price will be lower than what you see. Of course, last time I did that, you couldn't see any actual details of the plans at the different levels, so that was also mostly much ado about nothing, too. - OS -

'Fraid yer a preachin' to my choir thar feller. Anytime I let myself slip from role of stoic contemporary historian to that of patriot, it's numbingly damned depressing, but neither does my best objective mode exactly foster much serenity about the Great American Experiment either - which I do consider as a clearly failed one. I can only equate my relatively close attention to the macabre fascination of watching ants slowly but inexorably kill a scorpion. Oh "they call me a cockeyed optimist" Shoot -
Mmmm, let me guess: a significant push for no firearms on planes at all, no more legally declaring them in checked luggage, no firearms on airport property. Period. Amen. Selah. - OS

That was the early scuttlebutt with the huge cut to Medicare that Hussein had to have to help pay for ACA, but money got shuffled and seems no effect actually occurred. The 2014 official Evidence of Coverage has already been distributed, and 'bout the only diff I see is that advanced imaging (MRI, CAT, whatever) went from $150 to $200. Instead of the $1200 or so it would have cost me a year ago. A couple of other minor things actually went down, too. - OS

I've got UTG receiver extension/stock sets on 2 rifles, "tactical" endplates on three and high rise scope mounts on one. All been fine. Word seems to be Leapers/UTG took a pretty good quality leap some years back. ATI maybe not so much I think, and folks get the two confused? - OS

Well, I'm certainly not sure either, but look at the second part of your quote from the GFSZA: Which reads to me that TN would have to verify the qualifications of another state's permit holder, which of course it does not. And I really don't think the first part is intended to mean that any state "licenses" out of state folks. But of course it wouldn't worry you or me from carrying in vechicle on TN school grounds with a TN HCP. But I wouldn't feel quite as confident doing it in another state, assuming there was no other law against it. But it seems that it's a federal law not much prosecuted except perhaps in the most blatantly egregious circumstances, or would be a constant topic within the carry community, and I haven't seen a case mentioned with any otherwise legal carrier hammered with it. - OS -

FDR was first to recognize importance of not letting a crisis go to waste, long before Rahm Deadfish reiterated it. Most every liberal New Deal has proven over time to be a Bad Deal. - OS -

Always hard to judge that though, premiums going and up and bennies going down has been the norm for years now. I had BCBS for 21 years while at UT through '97, was always aces. You want to see how bad insurance situation has been over the last decade, I'll be happy to tell you what my experience was with individual policy options at age 47-65.. In a word, terrible, even for one in good health as I was and continued to be for the whole time. Now as official geezer, I'm with them again with Medicare Advantage, and so far, it's been like a gift from heaven, saves me 5.5K a year in premiums, and bennies are stellar. - OS

Blue Cross is a vendor on the federal exchange and on many if not most state exchanges also. I heard it said today that if you don't qualify for a ACA subsidy, you may well be able to get the same policy listed on site cheaper directly from the provider. This would suggest that the insurance companies are padding their price to some degree on the exchanges. Btw, you can see the plans on Healthcare.gov now without making an account or actually applying. Every page in the questions stresses the prices are without the subsidies that "most" will get, to try and reduce sticker shock I guess. - OS

Hasn't been mentioned in this thread, bu 39-17-1313 is totally at odds with the federal Gun Free School Zones Act, wherein the exception is only for a carry permit issued by the state in which the school resides. So going by the wording of the two laws, while a out of state permit holder could not be charged under TCA, he certainly could be under federal law. - OS -

Would those 5 Dems who voted nay have fallen on their swords for The Party if it was a sure pass in the House? Would two or three of the Republicans who voted aye gone the other way to prevent it? We'll never know. - OS
