I have "lost" whole firearms for better part of a week, and I just live in an apartment! Course I'm 112 too, so.... - OS

Knox County Sherriffs Deputy chokes out handcuffed suspect.
Oh Shoot replied to 10-Ring's topic in General Chat
Again, I suppose there are binding policies in place about that. Pensions are basically just contracts, with terms specified. I know there was a flap about Baumgartner (the judge), so dunno if maybe some of the written policies were gray or what. Btw, his shenanigans affected other previous trials too. - OS -

Dunno what the rules are regarding behavior and pension. If you can be fired for cause and still collect pension under the rules, then so be it. If not, then JJ needs some heat. - OS -
Gillette et al gave up on double edged shaving when the patents ran out, unwilling to compete just in the non-proprietary razor blade market, though they still do in Russia. Indeed some of the better double edged blades in the world are made in the Gillette St. Petersburg factory in Russia. In the US, they just depend on the latest and greatest new patented design with propriety expensive blades. Shark must swim or die. - OS

Coming to realize how big an >4 inch blade really is
Oh Shoot replied to JAB's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
Yup, it really is a monster. I carry a Buck Stockman as my main utility blade, the ones the sheep sees :), but I do like the idea of having a whopper so that between the two can do 'bout anything a blade can do. I did chop a 3" or bigger limb off a tree with just the 4", but the XL will do the whole tree methinks. :) Seriously, grabbing that baby toward the end of the grip gives some serious swinging leverage for tree or thug. - OS -
Only thing I've gotten in last couple weeks was the "notification that support has ended" update and the malicious software checker, which looks like they're gonna keep dumping out. Far as I know, you can still go to update site and get XP updates for any machine not up to date with whatever they had before the end support date. - OS

Went back to double edged about 9 months ago. Settled in with Edwin Jagger, tried various bulk sample packs, bought bulk packs of my four favs: Crystal (Israeli), Astra (Russian), Wilkinson (German) and Personna Blue (US). While the Feather is no doubt a great blade, I find it almost a bit too sharp (but not necessary as smooth as some others) will go right through any kind of skin aberration rather than glide over it, so takes a bit more care. Also double or more the price my favs above. No super fav as to soap, been using Proraso for a while now, but have stash of Williams, Conk, and Arko which are plenty fine also. Finish with witch hazel. - OS

Yup, +4" is getting on up there for daily carry. I'm gonna try my 5.5" Voyager for a while, we'll see. (currently toting the 4" one on bottom, and that's an XD 4" Service model for comparison): - OS -
The idea here is to build confidence by having gun ready to fire with no round loaded, to prove it won't go off. Anyway, yes, rack the slide with no mag, then insert mag. Carry it same way then as you would if round were in chamber. - OS

Call Remington's service line and ask. All paperwork and even the box they sent it back in said Remington when I had them work on my HR .30-30 anyway. - OS
-
Carry it cocked without one in chamber. Check it every couple of days to see if it's still cocked. After x amount of time, you'll be convinced it ain't gonna fire unless the trigger is pulled, and you'll keep one in the chamber, as of course you should. - OS

KNS Push Button Takedown & Pivot Pins
Oh Shoot replied to molonlabetn's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
KNS pins work just fine. Only possible downside is that since they are not captive, could lose them when you take rifle down in the field. - OS -
Supply, Demand, Pricing and the future of rimfire shooting
Oh Shoot replied to graycrait's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Where are you "hearing" that? Certainly seems to be no shortage of Wolf imports from Russian and Ukraine and elsewhere. Or Tulammo, Herter's, Monarch, Red Army, etc. 'Course I expect any day to hear that BHO has shut down all of it from Russia to punish them. Which of course will punish American gun owners. - OS -
Supply, Demand, Pricing and the future of rimfire shooting
Oh Shoot replied to graycrait's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I know of no new bans on imported ammo under BHO's presidency except the recent zap on 5.45 7N6 surplus? Are there countries who used to export ammo to us that haven't been able to in the last 6 years or so? - OS -
I favor leather for IWB and OWB, but you can't beat the thinness of Kydex for pocket carry. The Desantis SuperFly is one of the bulkiest pocket holsters made. My Kahr: - OS

grace period for out of state ltch
Oh Shoot replied to none's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
You can get a TN permit immediately after establishing residence. You have 6 months after establishing residence before you must get a TN permit to continue to legally carry. - OS -
Not speaking for Dol, but It's all BATF. The only thing TCA seems to have a say on at all regarding anything non-NFA regarding length is that part of "handgun" definition is having a barrel of under 12 inches. Not that having one with barrel of 12" or over is illegal, and TCA doesn't mention just what it would like to call that. Guess could technically figure into HCP carry though. At any rate, a muzzle device doesn't figure into legal OAL unless permanently attached because it's not considered part of the barrel unless it is, and OAL length is measured to the end of the barrel. I've never found anything that has ever been ruled as contributing to the butt end of a firearm for OAL except a grip or stock. Dunno if that answered your exact question, though. - OS edit: oh, you asked for a link. Here's a BATF letter explaining how OAL is determined and measured (on page 3) http://home.comcast.net/~routedriver/pub/misc/OAL/OAL1.png http://home.comcast.net/~routedriver/pub/misc/OAL/OAL2.png http://home.comcast.net/~routedriver/pub/misc/OAL/OAL3.png

Well, re-reading the thing, I don't see that a maker would be prohibited from selling them over state lines also, subject to the normal federal regs. Not that it will stand if challenged by the fed anyway, but something not addressed in the law -- what's to keep the TN firearm owner from crossing state lines with his firearm that is supposed to "remain within the state". Does that then make the manufacturer culpable, or somehow the individual (though can't quite think of what the individual could be charged with federally). - OS

URGENT - Permit-less Car Carry in the Senate Tomorrow
Oh Shoot replied to wk05's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
He can carry it in lots of legal situations without a permit. There are 21 year old and up people who can not get a TN permit who can legally buy, possess, and carry firearms in certain situations too. I don't think ability to get a TN HCP could be determined as the qualifier in the statute. As always, my legal opinion is worth what you paid for it. - OS -
Never heard of them, still haven't after a Google. But whoever they are, if they want to get on the map quickly, they should start selling directly to the TN consumer under the TN Firearm Freedom Act! - OS

Yeah, I'm "AR guy" too, and they're all black, but have found I really like the AK also. Got hooked shooting a friend's over a while. And after being really pleased with the lowly WASRs accuracy, stocked up on some ammo, and it's sort of a policy of mine not to have a single gun in any caliber that I do stock, so, yeah, the sickness grows. :) - OS

Almost certainly corn snake. Exact colors and intensity of most all snakes can vary a good bit. - OS

So, wound up with a couple of new WASRs in last couple months. As most probably know they come with unfinished stocks, quite light in color. However, current series, at least my two (through Bud's and PSA, a month apart) did not have the plywood laminate butt stock, but solid wood ones, no pins through them or anything. Birch probably, but just guessing -- pretty nice looking though. I know, they're "just cheap AKs", but thought I should at least do something to the wood to seal it against moisture a bit at the least, so took all the furniture off, didn't do anything to existing wood 'cept rub all over with 0000 steel wool and rub down with alcohol. At any rate, left the first one in it's natural light color, thought tung oil would be nifty, but after reading up on it, actually takes months to do a true tung oil finish correctly, so cheated and used Formby's Tung Oil finish, 5 or 6 coats over 4 days.Perhaps made it just a touch more "golden" in tint, not sure. Put it on all surfaces, inside and out, even the hole through hand guard for the cleaning rod. Finished off with a couple of rounds of Kiwi Neutral paste shoe polish. Yeah, I guess the butt pad will leave a different ring on it as it ages, oh well. So the second one, thought maybe I'd actually make it a reddish tint, even picked up a used hand grip at gunshow with that in mind. So, after reading a bit, and being the slacker I am, opted to try mighty Kiwi Cordovan paste shoe polish. Just soused it on liberally, let sit for 20 min, buff with old sock, and do it again, about six coats. Turned out pretty nice, nice enough for me anyway. For whatever reason, the second one is significantly smoother to the touch, dunno exactly why, but guess it was that the stock itself must have been better sanded when I got it, as both got handled same way, and even the first one was finished with the shoe polish, so dunno. The slight lighting glare exaggerates it some, but it's true the upper and lower hand guards didn't fully take to it quite as well as the butt stock for whatever reason, but again oh well. Time will tell how it'll hold up. I note that folks who do this say it's really the carnauba wax that's the best, and Kiwi no longer uses that, but again again, oh well. :) - OS

The official name of the TN division has been Department of Safety & Homeland Security for a couple of years or more now. And yes, that means various funding from and integration with federal DHS. - OS edit: great minds think alike, eh Bubba? :)
