  1.   Well, that statement denies the already mentioned defense to unlawful possession or carry of a weapon, listed in 39-17-1308 as being on a par with HCP:   "Incident to lawful hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, sport shooting or other lawful activity"   - OS
  2. Worth a special effort to Tivo RedEye anytime Penn is a guest. He can be flat out hilarious entertainment too.   - OS
  3. Federally, even true armor piercing handgun ammo is not illegal to possess. Just illegal to sell (to non govt agencies).   Not illegal in TN either -- just don't commit, or even attempt to commit,  any crimes with it here, as that's a separate felony charge. :)   - OS
  4.   I've been lucky I guess, got 3 rifles, one SW barrel and two with PSA's FN made ones, and pistol with whatever J&T uses, all with A2 blocks, and all four will shoot bottom rung .223 to NATO 5.56 no probs. And I do like not having to change settings or anything, so haven't much cared about any finer tuning to see if they might run a bit cleaner or whatever.   Even the pistol that I put the heavier buffer in didn't change what was already a reliable shooter with good ejection pattern, and not really sure it made any appreciable difference in feel, been meaning to swap buffers back and forth sometime to really see if I can tell a diff.   - OS
  5.   Convinces me ... but of course high school algebra dropped me from the honor roll a year in high school and I had to really book for the one math course I had to take in college while even the easy A type jocks breezed through it. :)   edit: but meant to still emphasize, that there are ARs that just won't run reliably as first configured, but will with a heavier buffer and/or spring, so the bolt unlock is just part of the equation between success and failure in the overall timing. Also throw in the fact that an extractor upgrade (heavier spring and possibly o-ring addition) will also "fix" some to run reliably also.   - OS
  6.   Oh, I had foxes right here in the back of the apt complex when I moved in. A natural little pocket of nature sandwiched in right here near town tween me and the interstate. Another apt complex seems to have finally zapped the foxes and possums, but up to about a year ago I still was seeing one extended family of racoons here and there, but they may have been finally eradicated by now.   Guess I can now always look forward to a new family of yotes though, seems. :)   - OS
  7.   Well, since the whole cycle takes less than what, .5 sec?,  seems anything that slows down the bolt unlocking at all would be "appreciable", even if just a few ms?     I certainly don't disagree that many if not most manufacturers produce over gassed guns, and the reason is obvious, as you have often said -- most overgassed guns will still run okay with any ammo while running closer to true spec can cause short stroking with weaker ammo.   And of course an adjustable gas block is the best way to tune an AR for various power loads, even if the gas port is in true spec to begin with, no argument with that at all.   But on the other hand, for real world average use, if the user problem is a gun so overgassed that he's damaging or even tearing through cartridge rims and throwing casings at 1:00, or overriding picking up the next round, and a heavier buffer and/or spring alleviates those problems, that really is a  simple and inexpensive "fix" as I see it. Even using heavier buffer for less perceived snap or "recoil" has a benefit too (I did it with my pistol, even though wasn't having any problems to begin with).   Yeah, I know you may still be accelerating wear even after doing that, and likely running the rifle dirtier than necessary, but you know, that's really splitting hairs at that point for the long term. And of course, anyone with an A2 sight base block is gonna have to do some significant work, whereas a buffer and/or spring change is a snap.   On a similar topic, does that adjustable gas tube you mentioned really work reliably, seems like the adjustment at that level would have to be incredibly precise?   - OS
  8.   Yup, can be quite the adventure, cheap thrills and all. :)   - OS
  9.   Seems to me a heavy buffer would have to delay unlocking just as a heavy slide on a blow back pistol does? Or a heavier spring would do same, seems?   Sure are lots of other folks who think so too, just for the record. :) :   https://www.google.com/search?q=ar+15+heavy+buffer+delay+unlock&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb   Including Windham Weaponry, who makes ARs?     http://www.windhamweaponry.com/shopexd.asp?id=275#ixzz32JGuVn4u   - OS
  10. Walking to Y today, big ol coyote not 15 yards off Sutherland Ave (significant 3 mile artery in Knoxville). It was where the 3 Mile Creek Greenway intersects. Fairly large area but well pent in by town and residential/commercial areas. Hell, it's only half a mile from Sutherland boundary to the Kingston Pike one (truly major artery, is also US Hwy 11). Close enough to me I might could have dropped him with my 3" Kahr, no kidding. Well, somebody who can shoot could have anyway. :)   Can't image how he could get here really, only way seems to be maybe by following rail road tracks in from the west somewhere. But I've also seen a couple of deer in this area before too and wondered how they got here either, figgered maybe they had swum across the river from somewhere and come through Sequoyah Hills maybe.   Nice looking critter really, good coat and not gaunt at all, full adult obviously, had to weigh 40 lbs or better. Probably some little yapper dogs and/or cats missing from the residential area near West High I'd wager.   He and I did an eye to eye, and he didn't even slink off till I walked toward him and closed the distance to maybe 10 yards. I walked around to another angle and could see him standing watching me from now about 40 yards away back in a cleared swatch on edge of trees as I left and walked on down the road.   - OS
  11.   No, not accurate at all.   Original Medicare Part A covers all in hospital expenses for the first 60 days of any stay (except private room, phone/TV if billed extra, etc), but with patient owed $1216 deductible per benefit period. After 60 days, Double Jeopardy starts, where the scores can really change.   Also, you can get much better Medicare coverage through a free Advantage plan too, without paying for a supplemental one, if it suits your health needs.   You should research a bit before these sweeping claims you're prone to make. Most of Congress is not made up of lawyers and doctors either:   http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/78726-doctors-against-guns/#entry1149559   - OS
  12. Okay, even though it won't affect me being on Medicare Advantage (which will have its own separate problems as time goes on), I read up on it a bit more. And yes, you and the article you quoted are at least partially right, in that there is a chance of a significant change with the "reference pricing" thing.   Seems this article from New Republic puts it most cogently, at least for me.   http://www.newrepublic.com/article/117812/reference-pricing-obamacare-consumer-protection-weakened   First, though, seems no ACA administered policy can be affected by it, the yearly out of pocket max will still apply, period. But yeah, looks like at least with elective surgery, the consumer with certain policies could have to do a bit more research before choosing the provider.   I see that there is a comment period through Aug 1, so we'll just have to see how it shakes out.   I would imagine that there will have to be some sort of mandatory notification built in to the process if it becomes official policy though -- meaning if it shakes out that indeed a provider which accepts your insurance can then charge you more than the insurance pays, you'd know beforehand, so if Vandy indeed would charge you over and beyond your insurance, you'd know that going in. It isn't gonna help these health providers' bottom line for the extra effort to bill for services that they'd seldom collect on, after all, which would be the case with the majority of the rank and file who were surprised with the charge.   I'd also posit that for fairly obvious reasons, emergency services won't be allowed to be run under the same guidelines, whatever those turn out to be exactly.   - OS
  13.   That's how insurance has always worked. The insurance company pays x for x procedure and the health care facility either accepts a certain insurance and agrees to accept that fee or they do not. However, the "billing you for the excess" part is bunk AFAIK.   Matter of fact, for the last 10 years before I assumed official geezer status, the ONLY thing my insurance did for me was that I paid the insurance rate instead of the walk-in price (often close to half the price) since I never hit the 5K deductible to where insurance would pay for anything at all. So they had to charge me the insurance rate, as it's part of the contract when they accept a certain insurance.   You never notice the "write off" or "allowed charge" on a medical bill? That's the difference between what the provider would charge an uninsured person vs an insured one they accept.   Of course, you'll pay out of pocket for whatever deductible and/or a certain % more until you hit the yearly total out of pocket. Which is nothing new either.   In short, what's new here,  except that the insurance companies/Medicare are paying less as time goes on, and of course gummit intervention in making a more universal contract among insurers who agree to participate in ACA.   What's new are some of the author's claims, but I think he's simply quite uninformed on medical health insurance facts and don't believe some of his statements are accurate at all. If a health provider accepts your insurance for the needed procedures, it also accepts the fee structure that your insurance will pay for them,  and doesn't "bill you for the extra".   And sure, it could be that you won't be able to get your bypass done at Vandy, if Vandy doesn't accept your insurance. But if they do, they'll do it for the price agreed upon in the contract.   Now, if anything has changed regarding what I've said above, I'd like to see documentation, as sure, I could be wrong -- there's probably no way to overestimate the devastation that ObamaCare is gonna have, but I don't see this as part of it.   - OS
  14.   Probably? It's a clear cut subscriber selling site. Sign up, design your shirt, and sell it off same site. English obviously not required.   - OS

  16.   Series of commercials Holiday Inn ran for years, maybe couple dozen or more of different ones. Looking for quick link to some, found one I'd never actually seen:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlCLuIwuVgQ   Lots more:   http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=i+did+stay+at+a+holiday+inn+express+last+night   - OS
  17.   You always say that, but it's not accurate. Federal law only requires that you do not "know or have reasonable cause to believe" that the transfer would be illegal on any of those grounds. Important distinction.   That's why sting operations do not nab folks for merely selling without asking for identification, because it is simply not required. If they want to get a seller, they preface the deal with:   "hey, I'm from Alabama, but ...." "hey, I've got a bit of legal trouble right now,  so I can't buy from an FFL, but ...." "hey, I'm only 17, but ..."   THEN you "know or have reasonable cause to believe" and are culpable.   That being said, I myself would ask to see ID if I didn't know the person, and did, with the whopping one gun I think I've ever sold that way. :)   - OS
  18.   As partially obsessed with knives as I've long been, it's odd that I really don't care about having a nice auto, conventional or OTF. I guess all the nice assisted openers sort of stood in for them or something, and actually for whatever minor reasons, even an AO has rarely been my choice for daily carry either.   - OS
  19. It's odd, I don't care for a VFG or AFG on a rifle at all, but somehow the vertical one just feels right on my shortie: - OS
  20. So did anyone actually go?

  22.   I liked my AR pistol before, but with the brace, I love it.   Two things make it even nicer: the KAK buffer tube and a more upright grip like the MOE K2, amazing ergonomic improvement for the short pull.   But that's a sweet looking build for sure. Even though it's in the wrong forum. :)   - OS
  23.   Been  several threads on it here. I piddled with it a couple times, only went 3 tires high. My boss back then would go 6 or 7. Lots of spuds and very easy harvest! ;)   Not much to it really, just keep filling up around the green top and whatever you cover turns into root system with taters.  'Bout only decision is whether to start actual plant in ground or in first tire (in ground was my boss' choice, obviously anchors the plant better, so you still have to dig a little bit to get them all). Also, you'll likely need to water them some, as the soil of course dries out quicker in the stacked tires.   Lots of folks around the country do it, very handy if you have limited garden space.  And sure, spuds grow here just fine:   https://www.google.com/search?q=grow+potatoes+in+tires&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb   - OS
  24. A beaut.   You know you can use a standard VFG instead of the AFG on that config if you wanted to, right?   edit: check that, looks like you are using conventional length buffer tube, even that 11.5 barrel might be just a hair short of 26" over all length, not sure?   - OS
  25.   Yep, price some of the HKs, SIGs, full size Beretta, etc.   Glock seems to have the knack for keeping supply/demand pretty well balanced , even including all the LEA trade-in's in the picture. Never really a serious shortage but also never so much of a glut that Glock drops the price much to dealers.   - OS
