  1. Wow, great! - where did E's original face shot come from? Anyway, it remains to be seen whether ATF will even attempt to actually enforce this opinion at all. They only have to prosecute one person to make the point, but then they open it up to courts, all the way to the top. I still say they won't risk it. Reversing the original opinion that these type braces are indeed stocks is the clear cut way to prevent them from being used for shoulder fire. - OS
  2.   After parsing, can see that Ron's comment was:   ".... I am a new resident in TN and was appalled when I found out that by carrying in a posted place made me a felon...."   Which of course is wrong.   - OS
  3.   Usually a $500 deductible, though, eh?   - OS
  4. I've got some Geco .223. Seems like very good stuff, matter of fact specs claim it's about as hot as .223 gets loaded, have no reason to doubt it.   Have also shot RWS in 9mm, and it was fine (although steel jacket bullet), so my take is that so far Switzerland is producing purt good stuff for export.   - OS
  5. I've seen no shortage of all kinds of bulk .357 mag online over the last year, at about same price as pre-Sandy Hook, plus normal inflation.   Trick is as always to buy it before you need it, take advantage of sales, free shipping, coupons, whatever.     - OS
  6.   As long as one can buy any product at retail price and make even 10% profit, maybe even 5%, , it won't stop.   Hell, if you could pop by Wally's or wherever every morning and buy inkjet carts or whatever and easily peddle them for a profit, folks would do that too, eh?   - OS
  7.   Toyed with that, actually took and did quite well on LSAT once upon a time about 8 or 9 years after college, but didn't get into UT the year I needed to go if I was gonna do it, due to low GPA in undergrad and more folks than usual that were accepted at more lofty places staying in state due to economic turndown. Maybe I'd have liked it if could have found right niche, dunno. Didn't really have a burning desire to do it, probably could have gotten in somewhere else out of town. Wasn't in position to try the next year.   I pretty much treated college as just an inconvenience the last 3 years, even dropped out for a year, worked and partied and coasted on a first year 3.9 for a mighty final 2.6. :) Easy to do in liberal arts, didn't have to even show up in half the classes all that often. GPA bit me that one time, though.   Several of my better friends were lawyers back when.  Really.   /thus endeth the Shyster Saga ;)   - OS
  8.   Thanks for clarification. I was going on the only hours of operation statement I ever found regarding NICS from 2009, assumed it stayed the same, and didn't know TICS was allowed to deviate. Or maybe NICS has changed also?   http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2009/11/fbi-announces-nics-background-check-holiday-schedules/   Only shows shorter hours for Thanksgiving Day, only day closed is Christmas, and even extended hours on Black Friday.   - OS
  9.   Their endowment base is huge, much like a university's. Depending on how my dotage goes, I might leave 'em a little something myself. ;)   - OS
  10.   Bro, it's a novelette. 45 year work history was combo of brawn and brain,  adequate to good with all of it, sadly never found my true calling, whatever it was.   - OS
  11.   Yes, there is a form you need to file with ATF for approval to cross state lines with an NFA firearm. Is is not required for silencers, though.   Dolomite can fill in the details.   - OS
  12.   I split the diff between frugality and altruism. Odds are the NRA will get more membership bucks from me this way than if I periodically renew till I croak.   - OS
  13. I've looked into that as was considering SBRing what started as a pistol. It's my understanding that as long as it has a short barrel on it, or even if you have the short barrel with you, it stays an SBR even without a stock.   Though you could take it out of NFA purview by putting it in GCA condition with 16" barrel and stock and not possessing the short barrel, it can't go back to GCA pistol condition by simply removing the stock.   This seems to be an exception to the "first a pistol, can be rifle, or back to pistol" for normal GCA firearms, as you have created a new discrete rifle by SBRing it, and if "first a rifle, must stay a rifle."   (note: this exact question is not answered in the ATF FAQs, but seems to be the situation when you read all the others)     Sorry, but I know that's not so. You can take it out of NFA purview, temporarily or permanently, without notifying ATF at all. It is "recommended" to do so, but not required.   "Q: Is it necessary to send notification to ATF and receive acknowledgement that the SBR or SBS has been removed from the purview of the NFA before it may be sold as a GCA firearm?     There is no requirement for the possessor of a registered NFA firearm to notify ATF that the firearm has been removed from the purview of the NFA. However, ATF recommends the possessor notify the NFA Branch of such changes in writing so that the possessor is not mistakenly identified as the owner if the firearm is later used in a crime. If, at the time of transfer, the firearm does not meet the definition of a SBR, it should be transferred without filing the NFA transfer application and without payment of the transfer tax."   "Q: Who is responsible for notifying the NFA Branch when I transfer the GCA firearm to a FFL or another individual?     There is no requirement that the transferor or transferee of a GCA firearm notify the NFA branch of a transfer or that either party determine whether the firearm was previously registered under the NFA. There is no also no requirement for the registrant or possessor of a NFA firearm to notify ATF of the removal of features that caused the firearm to be subject to the NFA; however, ATF recommends the owner notify the NFA Branch in writing if a firearm is permanently removed from the NFA."   https://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/national-firearms-act-short-barreled-rifles-shotguns.html#atf-notification       - OS
  14.   AFAIK, NICS is open every day but xmas day, and TICS has to keep same days/hours.   - OS
  15.   If done as FOPA describes, we do. I've not seen any of the "horror story stops" where the people were abiding by it.   It would be good I guess to more precisely exempt various stops in the journey, though.   - OS
  16.   I'd have to live to the unlikely age of 91 before I "save money" on just doing 5 year extensions at the current rate of 100 clams each. I throw them some bucks now and then in addition to the membership fee, and this was just mostly another way to do that.   And of course to get the uber groovy wheeled tote, which I'll need just to make it to the car with stuff should I indeed live that long still ambulatory. ;)   - OS
  17.   Maybe he deserved it.   - OS
  18.   I dunno. Sounds like shooting a pistol with more than one hand will soon be illegal, so you may go under Leavenworth using both hands and yer pecker too!   - OS
  19.   Used ones are going quite cheap indeed on arfcom EE, many bundled with various buffer tube assemblies too.   - OS
  20. Seems this is just for existing members, and I guess all of us get notice in mail, but thought I'd mention it. Haven't bought any guns in a while, so found myself flush enough to have no excuse for finally doing it. :) A "$129 value rolling duffel" comes with it, which is bound to be worth at least 25 clams or more, too. ;) Online link: https://www.nra2015.org/ - OS
  21. Btw, TGO David, can't find the thread, but just a nod to your post about some sort of blanket announcement from ATF regarding the brace -- turned out to be pretty much spot on.   - OS
  22.   I imagine lots of vids and still pix are disappearing from all over the web, eh?   Of course, just how is this new "mandate" supposed to be disseminated to all the folks who have purchased them? "Ignorance of the law is no excuse", but of course the law has not changed.   This is not even an official "ruling", and indeed the last one of those on ATF rulings page is from July 2013, but of course there have been any number of newer ones, including one already in 2015 (regarding 80% lowers).   What responsibility do the makers and retailers of the various braces have to communicate this to new buyers. Do they have any responsibility to try and communicate this to previous buyers?   Etc.   Maybe some activist will show up outside Max's office building in Martinsburg and shoulder his braced pistol for a while to see if he gets arrested to get this thing rolling. ;)   - OS
  23.   Probably will significantly affect sales of AR and AK pistols period. Don't know how many folks I've seen post on forums that the brace was only reason they bought or built one.   - OS
  24.   This guy Kingery may turn out to be a real pariah for them. I wonder if he is favorite of Todd Jones,  Obama's hand picked director from the outside,   - OS
  25.   Methinks it is likely just ironic coincidence.   I'm wondering if ATF even wants to go there by prosecuting anyone. Last time that sort of thing happened led to the Thompson decision by SCOTUS, where ATF lost significant leeway for prosecution.   I'm still thinking ATF will be content to just continue its tradition of intimidation via the FUD route.   - OS
