New Twist in the SIG Brace Debate
Oh Shoot replied to btq96r's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
Mad Max says that shouldering a brace changes the firearm to an SBR. All the "intent" stuff is non sequitur now according to him. He is not a lawyer btw. - OS -
There's a significant diff between the various PSA offerings however. Certainly the PSA "premium" stuff is as good as most anyone's. The PTAC less so. On the other hand, it seems quite adequate for most shooters' needs, and PSA is as I understand warranting it pretty much the same as any of their other stuff. - OS

Yeah, high cholesterol intake does not necessarily equal high cholesterol blood levels, and even those levels seem to be more concerning as regards to LDL and triglycerides rather than total volume. And even saturated fat is looking to be much less of a culprit than always assumed, and maybe no culprit at all. And carbs are increasingly being admitted as the biggest determent. Science and even gummit recommendation is coming around on all that finally. The long standing recommended "food pyramid" is increasing proving to be the best way to shorten your life. :) Basic deal with carbs is that our bodies aren't really optimized to use them, especially as major source of fuel. Remember, homo sapiens has been around about 200K years, and our bodies haven't significantly changed -- until less than 10K years ago with advent of agriculture, carbs were small % of the diet, and then only seasonal as gathering allowed. Indeed, studies into folks with severe grain allergies has led to the idea that the normal body sees carbs as an invasion to a certain extent, and produces histamines in various levels in reaction. Which is why many folks with allergies who low carb find that their overall allergy responses improve -- by taking away the "background radiation" histamine level, the overall histamine level is less when other allergic agents are encountered, often low enough to trigger no real response at all. I found this out right away with my ragweed response from Labor Day to first frost for example. As far as weight retention, carbs are notorious, as any excess not directly needed for conversion to glucose for energy is immediately stored as fat, while in the absence of excess carbs, excess fats and protein are largely excreted. And the claim that high protein intake damages the kidneys has been proven to be a myth too. The body uses intake in the order of: alcohol, carbohydrates, fat, and protein. Good thing about the alcohol, or you'd be drunk for days instead of hours. You can see the alcohol being used first as really as much defense mechanism as anything else, and to a certain extent at least, the preference for carbs first in the absence of alcohol, as if fat and protein were used first and if that intake were sufficient for energy level, every gram of carb consumed would store as body fat. - OS

No, big diff between ketosis and ketoacidosis. The latter is the diabetic condition due to insufficient insulin, and primarily involves type 1 diabetes, but seldom due to the insulin resistant/insufficiency for body mass state of type 2. I've done strict low carbing in the past, indeed lost 30 lbs back when about as quick as it went on when I first quit smoking, and didn't even watch calories. But can assure you that not all calories are equal. I can maintain weight on 2500 or more per day low carb or gain on 2000 or less high carb. I've tended to stay on the low carb side for many years, but haven't been a carb Nazi about it. However, I've started watching them more strictly again, as need to drop 20 or so pounds once again as I've crept up. All that said, I couldn't lose a pound per day if I consumed nothing but lettuce and water. :) But can easily lose a pound or a bit more per week for my body size by consuming around 2000 calories per day or even more, if I keep carbs to under 50 per day. And of course what carbs you do consume should have some additional benefits .. there's a big diff between what you get from say, various beans, and the relatively "empty" carbs of potatoes, pasta, and bread. And there are various other benefits of low carb diet also, but that's another story. My problem is that I like pretty much everything that humans eat! - OS

Hell, it's aggravated assault to show a firearm so as to cause fear. But we're already talking about a situation wherein you might well need to pop a cap -- I wasn't advising such unless one were indeed already in that level of threat. Only that the ultimate choice might not have to be made too. - OS

I'm 6'2", overweight at 225 or so, but certainly don't look defenseless either to most anyone I wouldn't think. But certainly, after the fact, your various ailments would almost certainly figure into the equation more than mine. And btw, contrary to the "don't ever pull a gun unless you pull the trigger" talk, you don't have to do that. It's clear that many incidents are defused all the time by the mere presentation of a firearm. Though of course you should be mentally prepared to use it if you pull it, doesn't mean that actually pulling the trigger is always necessary. - OS

Near as I can tell, even though I do have various physical issues, I'm in the top 25% or better health/shape wise for my age group (knock on wood). Nonetheless, I am 66.5 and simply nowhere near as lithe or strong as I was even ten years ago, let alone of course back when. Which is simply to say, there's no doubt in my mind that I'll have a reasonable fear of serious injury or death if I have to face a beating -- and can assure you I don't intend to take one. Let the chips fall where they may afterwards. - OS

Well, the district was just northern Texas, so theoretically any FFL in that district could sell handguns to out of state residents. Like any actually would, eh? Also though, federal law says sales have to conform with state laws, so anyone from a state whose state law forbids it couldn't anyway (and there are a number that do). - OS

Yeah, I don't like indoor ranges much at all. Claustrophobic, highly concussive, bad air, all that. - OS

Well, that's all rather distressing. Guess I might just drop back to regular license if that's the case. Haven't needed it in 10 years, didn't even need it the last three years of my final gig with FedEx, as just did step van. Just thought I'd keep it, cause like ya never know, ya know? Renewed mine summer of '13, so medical card will expire this summer. As far as the "certified doctor", hasn't it always been that you had to go to one that was certified to do the DOT test anyway? They're the only ones who stock the cards. :) - OS
-
Never heard of "suspending" one, unless DOT suspended you for infractions. It's my understanding that if you want to drive a Class A (or B) vehicle period, you have to have current medical card, but maybe I'm been wrong about that all this time. - OS
-
Intrastate means you drive only in the state. Interstate means you cross state lines. If that's the question. Has something in the law changed? Meaning, you never before had to have current medical card just to keep CDL, only have to have one when you renew it, or of course if actually driving a vehicle that requires CDL. Guess I'll find out too, my med expires this summer. - OS

Last reports I've seen on TGO regarding Tactical Advantage was that it's still a real 180 from the rotten rep of the Coal Creek crew. - OS

The thing about the welfare state is that it has driven a huge amount of the economy underground, likely the largest % in history. These "rich poor" folks that everyone cites aren't living that way on the various doles alone. The ones that aren't stealing are indeed working at something or other, for untaxed income. So you've got a double whammy with the various gummits paying more out with less coming in. Half or more of the handymen, yard workers, mechanics, flea marketers, eBayers, etc in this country are working off the books to supplement their "real" income from the dole. Hell, even the drug dealers are working, just off the books. And of course the "gimmies" keep voting for the ones who promise the most to give them -- the worst things get from the absurd arithmetic of government largesse, the bigger the voter base for it, the vicious cycle of Big Brother Liberalism that strives to make everyone so frigging "equal" that you can't even see self-determinism and individual responsibility in the rear view mirror anymore. - OS

Not that simple. That was a district court ruling from a single judge only. Not sure a part of the USC can actually be demanded for repeal by Congress except by the Supremes? As I get it, the plaintiffs in the case only could now go to another state and buy a handgun from an FFL. As if they could find one that would do it. So it's sort of a case law benchmark, but how that may eventually transfer to actual law of the land short of SCOTUS decision I dunno. And if the gov doesn't appeal it, well...?? Maybe Chip will Chip In on this one. ;) - OS

Made me laugh too, just visualizing it. :) - OS

Some press them out pushing right size socket or iron bar or whatever down in there, but I believe some have split the mag tube doing that too! - OS

Oh I agree that if the Zeds were their only adversaries, I probably would have given up on it a good while ago. - OS

Hell, that's significantly less than the state wide average for both elections. (2012: 39.04, 2008: 41.7) - OS

Do you not have permanent alien status yet? (meaning, if you do, then you can indeed at least collect Social Security after 10 years worth of employment). - OS

Kinda tricky, Nicky, to print off them steel ones. ;) - OS

Knew most of that, but wasn't sure about carry permits. My comment about having "dual" residency was only in relation to acquiring guns under federal law. IOW, a guy whose home of record is in FL but stationed in TN can buy handguns from FFL in either state, or legally buy guns in personal sales from residents of either state. - OS

Where to buy muzzle crush/peel washer locally?
Oh Shoot replied to TripleDigitRide's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
The Pig doesn't need a crush washer, since it doesn't need to time to a certain orientation like say a birdcage flash hider. The only reason to use one is if you're anal enough to want the markings to line up in an exact certain place. - OS -
People (yeah, them), say it's because Remington doesn't want you to add an extension, but the real reason is that the dimples hold the newer style magazine spring retainer. The retainer is not even really needed for operation but allows you to carry the shotgun broken down without the spring coming out each time you unscrew the end cap. New style retainer (tube has dimples): Old style retainer (no dimples, just friction fit): - OS

I'd say it's more up to TNDOS than Uncle Sam, ie, whether they consider you a TN resident or not, and dunno if being stationed here makes that so, unless maybe you change your home of record or whatever. It does seem universally true that if permanently stationed in another state, you are federally a "resident" as far as being able to purchase firearms, but again dunno if that counts as same residency requirement for a TN HCP in the eyes of the state. There is also a clause about residents of others states who have permit from that state but who work here on a regular basis, but again dunno if military duty counts as "working here". Call and ask about the particulars is likely best way: Contact: Program Director, Lisa Knight 1150 Foster Avenue Nashville, TN 37243 (615) 251-8590 Report back, if you will, would like to know the details of what they say. - OS
