  1. Yeah, I absolutely have not understood this thread in all it's different guises. It seems nuts to me to argue that a cop, a uniformed cop in particular, should EVER disarm under ANY circumstances (other than when drinking of course). Not only is he already dressed as a target, but he's going to risk his life for you if it comes down to that. Even while he's having lunch at O'Charley's, for c'sake. - OS
  2. Well, nobody's mentioned. It's not even a derringer! - OS
  3. It's far from being the same country that it was 85 years ago. Or even 35 years ago, although the economics in the 70's were just hiccups compared to the 30's.. Few have that "uncle in the county" to fall back on. Cities have majority of population, with 3 day food supplies. Whole moral ethos of the nation is different. We absolutely don't have the emergency infrastructure to manage distribution of food and services with our larger population. Etc, etc, etc. If we have depression like the 30's, well...suffice it to say, "Americans" today aren't going to stand in breadlines, even if there are breadlines. My guess, 25% unemployment and all bets are off. - OS
  4. I wondered once, too...mapquest shows two, and one is supposedly in McMinn County, between Niota and Sweetwater. But I grew up around there and never heard of it. Then again, though, I never heard of Tasso (near Cleveland), where Spuds is. - OS
  5. Derringers are dangerous. I should know, I own one! - OS
  6. Well, there's one on most every other major firearm site, why not here. Although it needs to be edited now and then by somebody. - OS
  7. (Abominable_Hillbilly): You're getting closer to just letting it all hang out, aren't you? (OhShoot): Not sure how to answer that. Is my fly open? Go ahead. We won't ride you too hard. Yeah, you will Obama isn't liberal. Not in any sense of the word. He's a statist and a leftist. A collectivist. Okay. Fine. I have no probs with that definition. Obama will still want a huge, obnoxious, overbearing government sticking its nose up our butts. Yep. Although Dubya increased size of fed gummit, by just about any measure, more than any Rep OR Dem certainly since FDR. Secondly, I dislike the preemptive apologia so many people like you are currently offering. "Obama probably won't do much because of the Bush legacy," etc. If you'll re-read, I said "I doubt he will be able to effect much good" and "has the ability to equal Dubya's debacle, but really is unlikely to exceed it." This is not BECAUSE of the Bush legacy, just compared TO it. Bush didn't cause what I see as the inevitable decline of quality of living, he just hastened it along. With executive order, Obama could do quite a bit, actually. Wreck the firearms community, for example. With his appointments to major federal agencies, he could set in motion programs and policies that would take generations to shake off. All true enough. But in total scheme of things, still unlikely to have overall detrimental impact on total population any worse than Bush. Of course, I'm quite concerned about the firearms issues - but it still remains to be seen exactly WHAT he'll be able to do about them. I was trying not to narrow my focus just to issues so pertinent to TGO (but probably should). Thirdly, I find it difficult to believe that you don't understand the terrible mess FDR created with his huge expansion of Federal power, and his failed attempts at a populist quick fix in the early 30's. I'm not lauding the whole thing, no. On the other hand, how is (as I see it) throwing away a trillion dollars of MY money to inefficient and corrupt financial institutions and failed industries a better plan? Call it what you like, but the government now is a "partner" in these endeavors, might as well go ahead and admit we're nationalizing them. You seem to consider yourself to be erudite. I don't believe I've ever expressed my self-estimation here, so I'll have to assume that's your evaluation! What is your defense of something like Smoot-Hawley? I'm not an economist. Finer points of protectionism, export/import trade balance, etc are beyond me. I'm not a historian. Hell, I'm not even a total news junkie. But, simplistically, seems if we can't compete in world wide economy, then we can't - means falling standard of living here. Only alternative is to produce everything we consume - which we can't. Or consume ONLY what we make - which also means falling standard of living here. Which all supports my main thesis that the population/resources upside-down pyramid has to topple. It's really an environmental issue at heart, but will be translated economically. Much quicker way for world population to crash, planet shrugging billions off like fleas. Not the Second Coming, not the end of the world, not the end of man. Just a correction. Soon? Dunno. But it will. Oops, did I get off track here in an already seriously off track thread? FDR prolonged the Great Depression. He didn't solve it. .. You could well be right. My only point there was that something similar might could stave off the Great Thinning here, if indeed this should be the beginning of it. For a while. FWIW, I offer none of this as a defense of the republicans. The two-party system has become tyranny, and the selection process of the American Idol President is long outdated, and indeed, not even constitutionally mandated. - OS
  8. DUDE!! You've really done some body work since I seen you last! Good job! - OS
  9. I've actually thought of that, but then that means removing piece to stow out in open, and retrieving in open too. - OS
  10. It is a FEDERAL rule, not state. It is still not lawful to carry in TN state parks, or even city/county municipal ones, for that matter. - OS
  11. (re: Center Of Mass safe) Yeah, same. Admit that I haven't really USED it yet. Hopefully good enough for temporary stash during brief absence. As you mention, good cutter of some sort and it's gone, though. I should really find a way to bolt it somewhere, but in a small toy pickup very limited as to where. Maybe vertically behind seat, need to look into that. As to increased ripoffs, hey, of COURSE it will increase in "good" areas - that's where the goods are. If I were looking to thieve, I ain't gonna do it in the projects! - OS
  12. Well, given his body build and age, O oughtta be even more spry! - OS
  13. Appreciate your comments. I love this country too, even though I increasingly dislike it. There's a fine line between pessimism and realism - I try not to cross it, but may fail from time to time. - OS
  14. I'll calmly submit that Dubya's failings were almost equally those of commission and omission. Acting on equivalent of playground impulse and disregarding wise counsel. Pretty much a failure of the entire "wisdom to know the difference" part of the Serenity Prayer. I'd love to read historians' take on him in 25 years, but I'm unlikely to be around to do it, and I wouldn't bet the farm that the US will either, in any semblance of what we call sadly still call America even now. As far as O, I doubt he will be able to effect much good in this now inevitable decline, but like all those who hold the eerie power of the POTUS, he certainly has the ability to equal Dubya's debacle, but really is unlikely to exceed it. Our "democratic republic" has become so crooked and elitist, and our increasingly ineffectual role within the worldwide play of population vs. resources has devolved to such a point, that a POTUS now has little chance of overall significant positive impact, but a disproportionate ability for the opposite. Indeed, as much as I'd hate to see it, the "socialism" of a New Deal/WPA type effort might be the only thing that staves off a drastic thinning of our population in the near future. Unfortunately, in the 30's there was light at the end of the tunnel from that kind of effort, but I fear the tunnel now holds little difference at the other end. There's no more there there. And that's my take on the news from Lake Woebegone. Good night and good luck to all of us. - OS
  15. Bush: Misguided, far from conservative, and dumb = disaster, makes Carter look like presidential titan Obama: Liberal and smart, likely to move toward center = jury still out for some time. - OS
  16. I knew dirt. Dirt was a friend of mine. And you sir, are no dirt. Yep...buttin' out here too..keepin' good thoughts for the best. - OS
  17. Meaning, things go wrong and hard feelings can abound with repercussions finding the original do-gooder. Always in ways one can't foresee. Oh "old enough to know that Murphy was an optimist" Shoot
  18. You can get pretty darn good shared server services for that, but certainly for $400/yr. Tungie, you know, something like the Network Solutions deal, you can try them for 30 days w/ money back. Don't even have to transfer domain reg or anything. You probably know how to simulate beau coup simultaneous connections without ever opening site to the wild. On higher end, Mark, you can actually get dedicated server service (meaning, you own 'puter in rack you control remotely) with dedicated IP and etc for $100/month and up. Just depends on what the needs really are - and I certainly can't know that. The vBulletin engine that runs the forum is maybe $150/year, roughly, depending on purchase/lease/update options. - OS
  19. Okay, send me about 400 of them, I'll just cover the entire freakin thang... - OS
  20. If only his other attributes were a tenth as good, like speaking, thinking, vision, wisdom, etc etc. - OS

  22. I'll tell the arresting officer your opinion if I'm ever caught on the bike trail with my heater (not that I would actually carry one there, of course). I'll mention it to the TN Attorney General also, who has published an opinion that disagrees with your viewpoint, too. (although I agree with you) - OS

    Kahr P380

It's been delayed and delayed, which indicates probs to me. These small autos may well be more problematic than even the PM series. I love my Kahr PM9, but with all the various probs with various editions of Kahr models though the years, I would NOT jump in on the first of the .380's. I'd wager first shipments will be equivalent of a beta test. - OS
  24. Although I wouldn't put any gun related info on my cars (possibly get a thief's extra attention), I'll certainly grab one or more of these to help the cause. - OS
