Hi. I picked up my first compound bow. It's used but it looks nice. Anyway, since the guy that had it is much taller than I am, I'm sure it can stand to be 're-adjusted' to fit me better. I've only shot it once and I don't know enough to see what's a 'good fit'. Anyway, what are some good archery places in Nashville? Also, how much does it typically cost to get a bow 'adjusted' to fit you? (i can see the pulleys have all these places the cables can go to). It's just a standard $400-$500 bow that you find new at Academy/Dicks. Where do you guys buy arrows? (best prices in town or online) thanks!

awesome tips here. I regret all those times i cleaned my rifle and 'exited the barrel and dragged the patch back in'.. among the other sins I'm sure I've done. I'm going to start doing a better job cleaning.

I have a Monarch Buckmaster, it's just below the Monarch in price. it's clear and I love it. It's on a savage 10fp. I got it from The Sportsman's Guide. I purchased their 1 year membership to get the discount and then the $10 off coupons. It came out to under $300. My dad has a Vortex from OpticsPlanet.net which we tried out on his new Savage the other day. It's looks great also.

Thanks Kenstaroni. silly question - how do you leave the hoppes in the barrel over night? Also, i've checked all the misc. stuff. Like it free floats of course. It's sitting on a McMillan stock. This is shooting on the bipod and my right hand to brace the rear.

i guess for folks with a savage 10fp - i'm curious if this is 'adequate' for accuracy out of this type of rifle using factory ammo or should I be upping my expectations (and training).

i have a used Savage 10fp - pre accutrigger but a very sweet trigger. it'll do .75 inch groups with Federal Gold Match 168. Slightly better with Hornady TAP 168. It hits below .5 once in a while when i really hold it steady. Best I've done (taken it out 3-4 times in the last year, with a box of 20 each trip - boy is ammo expensive)...is .45 inches. Scope is good. Nikon buckmasters. it's on well enough. No matter how much I clean (soak a patch in sweets 762 and run it back and forth for minutes (but under 15 minutes like the bottle says) and/or with Hoppes copper removal. use of brush. use of lots of patches, etc.), the rifling is still seen easily because it's full of a cooper tint. 1) does a barrel need to be absent of all cooper? or as long as you see the bore and the copper is just evident in the rifling, you are ok? 2) is there much accuracy to gain if i figure out how to get rid of all the cooper? 3) any other advise how to really get all the cooper out? thanks!

Me too, if I rack it slowly, it FTF sometimes. But if I just yank on the slide and let it fly - no issues.

I noticed my 10/22 (bought used with a butler creek folder stock) doesn't have a barrel band attached. It's only held by the take down screw. Is the barrel band needed? It has been shooting fine; I've just never noticed it until i started looking at the "post your 10/22" thread.

I'd like to attend an appleseed event. I've got (2) 22 rifles. A bubba-ed 10/22 (butler creek stock, cheap 4x scope, "muzzle brake", sling attached with an O ring, etc.) and a stock + 4x scope Marlin 60. I'm a tad more accurate with the Marlin 60 but from what I'm reading, removal mags are an advantage. Thus, I'm inclined to take the 10/22 especially since I've already got 4 reliable mags for it. I figure I'll bring the Marlin as a back up? Questions - 1. should I take out the cheap scope and just use iron sights? (I don't want to upgrade to the tech sights) 2. is the scope so helpful that maybe i need to upgrade it to something more decent? (the current scope is a 4x and it holds zero) 3. all internals of the 10/22 is stock. The gun has been reliable. But i've never done a 500 round straight shooting event either. Should I upgrade any of the parts? 4. will anyone make fun of my bubba-ed 10/22? (i bought it used so i don't have any of the stock parts and in it's own way, it does look kinda cool)

Aguila Match Rifle 22lr ammo thoughts?
vujade replied to jess01999's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
i haven't tried the aguila match but i did a little informal 22lr ammo testing the other day. Aguila High velocity 40gr did the best. If it's any indication of their match stuff... Average-ish groups of 5 were under an inch at 50 yards off a bubba-ed 10/22 with just the fore-end resting on an ammo can. The other end were the Federal bulk packs at 2-3 inches. -
how much $ was the Taurus?

Thanks for all the advice. I grew up in sunny California so it was common to keep dogs outside. I'm re-thinking it with the TN heat/cold. Would it be "fair" to have the dog sleep indoors with the family (a crate in a room) at night but then outside in the yard when we are off at work? I plan to build a little carport with a dog house so he/she can nap in comfort. As for exercise, at least once a day run/walk but I'm pretty sure my kid and I can do a AM then PM walk/run daily. and of course we have a decent enough yard to run around in.

With all the craziness going on (and increasing)...what do you all feel about a neighborhood watch? I'd like to organize one..at the minimum to feel like I'm doing something to fight back. Or are neighborhood watches just something for that...and they don't really work? any advice on how to get started? What i'd really like is someone from the law enforcement to start to meet with neighborhoods and talk to the people... what works, what doesn't, 2nd amendment rights, etc. Do LEO do that sort of thing?

oh and they work. I 'tested' the alarm by accident a couple of times when we first got it. they were calling me before I could even get to the control panel. one time when i said the wrong password by accident, they had sent the cops within a few minutes (sorry for the false alarm) so i know it works.

not with simplisafe but +1 with AdvancedTechAlarms. They are the ones endorsed by Dave Ramsey. As busy was they were when we purchased, they truly had hearts of teachers and wouldn't leave until my wife was comfortable with everything. they also don't have a contract. It's $10/month. You just have to buy the system (something like $400 and I think we added extra stuff) i did a cost analysis vs some other more well known places (like ADT) and it paid for itself after 10 months. They are locally owned/operated out of Middle TN also. (Fairview i think)

any advice as far as male vs female? we have a little kid so we'd like him/her gentle enough for the little one but we'd like him/her tough enough to scare bad guys. females do bleed so i'm leaning away from that. any other considerations?

wow. great advice. i'm going to try the (2) dog trick. hm. i wonder if that will work for guns also... and great idea for the 75 watt light bulb trick!

I think I've finally convinced the wife to have a dog. I'm thinking of a Doberman Pincher. (As a kid, we always had Dobermans or German Shepards) 1. Because of a myriad of things, the dog however may have to stay outside. Can dogs fair well with our hot/cold temps here? I do plan to walk/run him/her in the am and pm daily. I'm going to build a shed/enclosure as well as get a dog house. If it gets really hot/cold, I plan to have a crate in the house for him/her to stay. 2. Any advice on reputable sources for a Doberman here in Middle TN? thanks!

Can you carry a gun in the 6 flags parks? Or is there a drop off place for them? For Georgia or Kentucky. thanks!

+1 on the saiga 308; I have the 16' version not converted (yet?). I use it to pop off clay targets (sitting against the dirt, not flown into the air) at 50-100 yards. Easily done with iron sights. I also have an 8x russian scope mounted using the side rails. With the $75 dragonuv style stock (if you don't convert), there is a cheek weld piece that you can swivel up or to the side if you want to use iron sights or the scope. I love the rilfe. Strangely it seems more accurate using the cheap Russian ammo (monarch or bear) than the more 'expensive' stuff. (or maybe I'm just nervous when I'm firing at 75cents-$1 a shot)

oh. And my avatar is a shot I took of my Taurus Tracker. It's just fun. It's not as accurate as my Neos but I think it's just sexy (can you tell i like sexy guns?). It may be a little pricier at just under $400 for a 22 though but I'm happy with it.
