I've been running a Frigidaire brand dehumidifier I got at Sam's for ~2-3 years in a garage that is large enough to hold three cars. The rating of the unit is not large enough for the volume, but it seems to work fine. I set it to 45%. Even in the summer, it doesn't get close to running full time, so I assume it's fighting a winning battle. If I heard it running all the time, I'd add a second unit. I recommend sitting the unit on something to raise it up then put a hose on it to drain down to a 5 gallon bucket or run a hose to the outside. The built-in bucket will fill up QUICK in the summer. I prefer emptying a 5 gallon bucket since I am able to see how much water it is pulling from the air. If it drains to the outside, I really can't tell how well it's working.

Preferred gun safe retailer in Memphis?
S&WForty replied to S&WForty's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Give Bo a call at Town & Country, they have a good selection of safes and will treat you fairly.
I dug out an email a friend had sent me months ago. He had told me the same! When I bought my safe, I told Bo you referred him, too. I got the Liberty Fatboy, Jr. with electronic lock. It fit my Plan B closet perfectly. My Plan A closet door facing is so narrow nothing was going to fit through it. It's a strange feeling having my guns and ammo together. Previously, they were hidden separately from each other. The peace of mind factor sure is nice. -

Disarmed in a traffic stop
S&WForty replied to tennessee01tacoma's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
My little data point... I got pulled over for a warning on Thanksgiving. I fumbled trying to give the officer my HCP with my DL. He said leave the HCP in my wallet then asked if I was armed and where. I said "right hip," and he said, "just keep your hands on the wheel while we talk." MPD. Dolomite's post(#13) above makes a lot of sense. I rather the firearm not be handled, but anyone can snap. If they want it removed, I can't blame them. I'm glad my officer chose to handle it the way he did. -
If you're worried about theft of your laptop ( and rightfully so ) what I suggest is to use something like truecrypt to encrypt the hard drive. That will make it virtually impossible for anybody to get the data off your drive. You'll be prompted for a password at bootup and without that password you cant get into anything.
Does that software slow a machine down very much? Can you pick and choose what file types are encrypted? Or by file location?

That's cool! My dad could use that LiveDVD option as nasty as his PC gets from my step mother and sister's surfing. I have to reload the O/S about once a year for him. They clog it up with crap that bad.

Thanks for the replies. My only concern is if a thief got my laptop, what identity-theft type stuff could they pull from the browsers.
-
Thank you both for the links!

If someone uses IE or Firefox's private browsing option for all online banking/bill-pay website sites, can a computer savvy thief still hack into those sites somehow, or does the private browsing really leave no trail on the PC? I just reloaded my O/S on my old laptop. I wondered if it would be worthwhile to surf those type of sites with that feature enabled.

As much as this makes me dislike AZ even more, I have to wonder what their competitors' policies are as well. It seems whenever a story like this pops up, it's the same scenario. Most companies appear to have this stance.

I may be getting ready to buy a new laptop. I am out of the loop on AMD vs Intel. What does AMD market against the Intel i7's, and how well do they stack up? I'll use the laptop for Photoshop and Light Room. My new camera takes HD video, too. I'll probably start messing with video editing as well. I figure the RAM and video card memory are more critical than the processor, but I am still curious what techie people think of the latest processors.

Preferred gun safe retailer in Memphis?
S&WForty replied to S&WForty's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Yep. Gun safe. Finally decided I need one. I have a few pistols and one antique rifle, but I'd like to throw my portable electronics in there. I am tired of hiding stuff. (more tired of the threat of a break-in. Grrrr) And fire-protected personal documents would be nice, too! -
Does anyone have a gun safe retailer they recommend in Memphis?
While we would like to believe the point being made, it is inaccurate. Per capita, Memphis ranks way higher and Shelby County has the highest number of permit holders in the state.
Good point, but most of that crime is localized to certain areas that most permit holders avoid like the plague. I am sure there are upstanding citizens stuck living in those areas that do have permits, but random permit holders living in those areas aren't going to slow down gang crime.
As long as you don't have an attitude of superiority most people from the South will accept you for who you are and those that wont.... who cares. If you love the South the South will love you in return.
Amen. I've had to deal with many Yankees that had an attitude and felt it was their God-given right to criticize everything that they found different here. I take extreme issue with people that have to put others down to feel better about themselves. Yankees seem to be the most-practiced at that, and they do it in the name of "being blunt" or "being honest."

Good idea. I've always been on the pro side of guns, but I was scared of them before I took an interest and started learning about them. I can understand how people with no experience with them can easily be made into anti-gun by all the rhetoric.

Such a hoot! Putin calls Obama a communist
S&WForty replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Putin should know. Many expatriates of communist and dictator run countries who are living in America have expressed their fear of what we are quickly becoming because they recognize that the same exact thing is happening here that happened in their countries. They witnessed it and lived it first hand. Are we to doubt what they say? They know more about it than we who have lived free all of our lives do.
A coworker stuck a local Dem party ballot on the wall as a joke in our rather right-leaning office just before the election. Our cleaning lady is an immigrant from one of those former USSR countries. When she saw that stuck on the wall, she angrily asked, "Who here votes Democrat???" When she was told it was put up as a joke, she settled down. I told my coworker, "She knows communism when she sees it." -
An update on that store owner who banned Obama supporters
S&WForty replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Yep. I hate it when the libs do it. I hate it twice as much when someone on the conservative side does it. We're supposed to be the mature ones.
I definitely see your point. You're right. The flip side is we can say the sky is blue, but we're still going to be called extreme, intolerant, etc. We might as well give it to them. Hehe. -
You have to wonder. I won't even shop anywhere on a regular ole Saturday. I sure won't be caught in a store this long weekend. Mercy.
I found some on Monday, but im still waiting for someone to come unlock the case so i can check out. Will report back.....
That was me last Friday, sorta. Gal said, "I don't know where the keys are" with this look and tone that said "tough." I nicely but forcefully asked, "Can you call someone that may know where they are?" She had to make two calls a few minutes apart. Finally, some one from Automotive showed up with the keys. I had a few instances a year or two ago when I had to hunt down an associate to come open the case.
