There is a reason why the target kept spinning to the right for you and for me! lol It is a beautiful rifle, if it had winchester stamped on it, I would try to buy it, but since it says marlin, I will let you keep her!!

I have my first elk hunt planned for October 3rd-13th in Utah. This is just right after the rut, what are some good techniques for hunting public land for bull elk? Deep in the woods/high in the mountains? Never been and don't know much about it, but I am very excited. any advice from some guys who have gone before would be great. I did buy a hoochie momma caller last night, sounds just like the cows I have heard on TV

I know it shoots to the right!

My 30-06 has a zeiss 4.5-14 with target turrets(back up rifle) and my 300wm has a 5-20LR huskemaw on it. I doubt I will ever try to go past 800 yardsn anytime soon; I am looking for a place to practice some longer shots and check my ballistics and see how well it works. Practicing in the field is a no no.

I found if i multiply the moa drop by 4 it gives me the clicks needed
-
yes, it looks like that but it says drop(1moa) instead of drop(1click)
-
my technique for estimating range is my leupold range finder lol I have a question, my app shows it to have 13.7 MOA drop at 700 yards, there is another section where it shows me the required clicks, but on the chart I can print off, it doesn't show me clicks. my zeiss is 1/4inch clicks. how do I determine how many clicks are needed?

I'm using "Shooter" app on my phone. Like it pretty well so far, I can store all my rifles and all my loads in there and change data pretty easily. I need range time right now and someone who has experience with the apps, I would hate to miss a shot just because I was unsure which data went where or, because I misunderstood something.

Wind is one of the biggest variables and hardest to account for what it will do to the flight path

Well, guys, the time has finally come for my first elk hunt! The trip came up out of the blue and I am not 100% prepared. lol I leave Oct 3rd and will be gone for 10 days hunting at 8,000-9,000 ft. What I need help with is learning hot to use my ballastic app and learning the drop and shooting. I am going shooting with a friend tomorrow but that is only 100-200 yards, I need a place to shoot 500 600 700 yards, anything I can get! lol If someone is in the middle TN area and could help me out, please let me know, thanks, BJ

Well, guys, something I have always want to do should be happening this year! Elk hunting! I should be going to Utah to go hunting with a new found friend. He has been hunting public land for that last 13-20 years and has invited me to go camping and hunting for a week. I have never been before, we are just going to camp and hunt on the public land. I have never done that kind of thing and just wondering if someone on here has some experience elk hunting. I have asked my new friend a lot of questions and don't want to get to the point where I annoy him. How does elk hunting differ from deer hunting? Do they have as good of a nose as a whitetail deer....? If you have some advice let me know, I am very excited and I do realize that I may not come home with an elk, but know it will be a lot of fun either way. planned hunt is the week of oct 5th, after the rut.

I am open to smaller game hunting, the thought of less prep is good, I know the season is getting close. My dream is an elk but that might be for another year, although that is my first choice. lol -

My wife and I have 3 kids, and we are planning a road trip out west or somewhere! We just need to get away and spend some time together without the kids. My wife actually offered to let me go hunt for a couple days while we were out there, she knows how much I love hunting. I guess my question is this, what are my options, where can I go hunt for 2 or 3 days and not cost $2500 just to hunt there? I have no idea where to go, we have no plans on what state to go to, we are open to ideas. I have hunted whitetails in TN and IN, I would love to tag an elk or muley. If you have some suggestions or ideas, or you go out west and have some connections, please let me know. I can offer my whitetail hunting spot here in TN for a swap a hunt? Land is in granville by cookville. Any help would be awesome -
You don't really have 2 rifles, just 1 rifle with 2 caliber options(yes, it will serve 2 different purposes) but, than again, I am the guy who has lowers for each of his ARs because I hate to swap out lowers, who wants just an upper floating around the cabinet, too easy to get scratched. I also will use any excuse to buy a new rifle or handgun :pleased:

I have a remington 700 SS SPS in 300WM, great rifle. accurate out of the box. I never really understood the need to change barrels and have different calibers out of the same gun. Why not just buy the gun in the caliber you want, then you can keep your scope sighted in and not always switching and changing things and having to re-sight your rifle? To each his own. You can't go wrong with either rifle, both are accurate.

I'm very excited about this! One of my buddies is a huge winchester collector, and so am I. When they brought the 1895 back, we ordered a pair of consecutive serial numbered in the hard hitting 405wcf. As soon as I saw this 1873, I called him to tell him. I would love to see this in 45lc and 44mag too

actually went 26 on the barrel
-
Forgot to mention, I have high hopes for the Berger OTM 230 gr, that is the first bullet of choice for the 300wm, but we will see if it shoots it well or not. The barrel is a 1-10 twist.

Well, I guess this could be as bad as waiting to get a class 3 item! I have 3 of my weapons at middle TN gunsmithing, Brandon is a great guy. I can't stand the wait much longer though!! Here is what he is doing for me 1st cerakoting my Glock 22 frame FDE(this wont take long but I just got it to him) while I was waiting on this to get done, I bought a lone wolf threaded barrel and thread protector. I am planning on getting my first suppressor(thinking of a silencerco but that is a later thread) 3.5lbs disconnect, and extended slide take down. The g22 already has night sights on it, so, it should be pretty decent looking when it is done. If I like how the G22 looks when done, my G23 will be next. 2nd This one is a little more indepth but not as deep as the 3rd rifle, it is my remington sps in 243. Getting rid of the 243 barrel and going with a 20 inch 1-10 308 heavy barrel. Bell and carlson tan and black stock, stock needs worked to fit the larger barrel and bedded. trigger job has been done already. This is more of a budget build, so, the action wasn't squared all the way, but some of the bolt lugs were, it shot very well before, 1/2 MOA with factory ammo, so, the action should be ok to cut corners on this one, we will see. Factory buttom metal was removed and a plus 2 mag extender added. The optic for now(probably a zeiss in the future) is a weaver V16 on one piece talley rings. The finish will be cerakoted in SS while leaving the bolt body black, but the handle SS. The barrel is threaded, and the vortex flash hider will be left black. This build came up on the spur of the moment, interested to see how it turns out! 3rd and best for last(well, most expensive) Remington 700 SS 300 win mag factory SPS(6 rounds down the barrel). I am very excited about this rifle, building it more as a long range rig for future big game hunts but also decent in the setting of where I hunt deer here in TN, as I can easily get some long range shots. Let's start with the barrel, Lilja SS contour 5 (maybe 6, ordered it so long ago I can't honestly remember what we ordered) it took around 3.5 months for the barrel to arrive, it will be flutted, flutes will be cerakoted black, the action squared and gone through. Upgraded firing pin assembly and lighter bolt shroud, the bolt will be fluted but flutes will not be black. Factory bolt knob removed and custom one made by Brandon that is light weight and better looking! The trigger group is a timney at 3.5lbs. Holland and Holland muzzle brake to help tame the recoil. Bell and Carlson tan and black stock, bedded and worked for the barrel. Bottom metal is factory and will be reused, planning on doing a custom engraving on the floor plate, going to have my great grandfathers cattle farm logo engraved on it, "7E." It is a neat logo, I have his winchester 94 SRC 30wcf made in 1923 that he stamped it on the wood stock and the left side of the action, not my most expensive winchester, but my most loved by far. The finish on the rifle will be cerakoted SS, wanted it to stand the test of time and not get any rust spots on it, this rifle will be used, taken care of, but it will not be a safe queen. The bolt body itself will be black(not the handle that will be SS), wanted to tie the black flutes, trigger and safety, scope and rings all together, figured it would look good but we will see. The optic on this on is a Huskemaw 5-20LR scope, this scope, is by far the best scope I have ever looked through! Not that I have a ton of experience with super high end scopes, but I have several leupold vx2 and vx3, several zeiss and a pentax lightseeker 30, and the huskemaw is crystal clear and surpasses them all! Rings are one piece talley rings. I bought a Wheeler flip to side scope level, so far, I like it but field time will tell. Forgot one detail on the action, the left side of the action is stamped "remington 700," Brandon is going to mill that off and get rid of it. Not much factory on this gun, I almost went with a high end action, but couldn't justify the extra $1,000. The 308 was built as a mini 300wm but much much cheaper build. I look forward to posting pictures and showing all of you guys what has been in the works and in my mind for the last couple years.

Hey guys, I am about to purchase a vortex 3x magnifier with a 30mm body. I am looking for a flip to side mount that will work with the 517 eotech. I know the 517 sits higher than some of the other models, but have not been able to find an affordable mount, does anyone know of something that would work for me and my ar10? Thanks
-
I have used all of the bullets in my 30-06 that you guys have covered, i like the 165 nosler balistic tips. But I am building a long range rig that will be good for elk and deer and would like to use the same bullet for both. I have several other guns to take deer hunting if I wanted, but want to practice and use this 300wm as much as possible. Just wondering if someone had first had experience with the bergers. thanks
-
I am building an all purpose rifle for hunting, I mostly hunt deer here in TN but am planning on an elk hunt in the next few years. I am building a 300wm and plan on using the 185 hybrid hunters. I was wondering if anyone has been using bergers to shoot deer at close range? Are small TN deer tough enough to cause enough expansion to do the job?
-
I like those, not a bad price either. pressure switches can be added as well.

I am in the market for a few flashlights to mount on some ar15s. 1 is a pistol and the other is a m4 style. was thinking a laser light combo would be good for the pistol, while a flashlight with pressure switch would be good for the m4 with a forward pistol grip. Does anyone have any that are good lights that don't cost an arm and a leg? or does anyone have anything for sale?
