just for kicks my son and I went out and tried a few different items, we found an metric allen head wrench that fit and a Phillips head after trying those the primer fit. So I will try a few more until I can get my hands on the hornady tool.
-
yes it is the military crimp, and the only problem is I only have a progressive press, I like the idea of a counter sink but afraid I might get carried away, I suppose I will have to look around for the hornady threaded tool and pick up one of those up.
-
I have about 500 rounds to do and not sure what the best way to go, I have a multi stage press so I don't think the rcbs tool will work, I noticed that midsouth is out of stock on the hornady, let me know what some of you guys are using and what might be the best way to go. Thanks in advance for the help.

problem with a remington 700 Sa 308
Ron Padilla replied to Ron Padilla's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
after resizing the spent rounds they did fit as they should and ejected properly as well, they were very difficult to put through the press however to resize. So needless to say I wont be shooting any more of this, I a not going to reload the brass either, and as far as I know my son has put the rest of the ammo up on craigslist. thanks to all for the advice on what to look for in a hot round. problem with a remington 700 Sa 308

the primers have become flattened out and very expanded in the primer pocket but no holes. I take that as being a hot load. -

problem with a remington 700 Sa 308
Ron Padilla replied to Ron Padilla's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
The brass shows some markings around the neck, and the primer looks like it had a hard strike, my sons commented that they could be hot loads, so I was thinking that I would not fire any more of those, pull the projectile and de-prime then resize, reload etc, I was recall that they were hard to chamber as well. That did give me some clue and sis not continue to fire any more, but that was all took with me for that rifle today so I will have to wait till our next outing to see how it goes. I still have about 100 reloads and a few boxes and different mainline stuff I can check, tomorrow I get the firing pin pulled and check the bolt with a good known found to see how it chambers. -
problem with a remington 700 Sa 308
Ron Padilla replied to Ron Padilla's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Ya I was thinking about running a couple through the press and resize tomorrow then see how the brass chambers, the gauge is one of the items on my list that I need to pick to check the reloads with, as I mentioned all of the good store bought and the ones I have reloaded have run fine it has been these and the other questionable stuff that has given me a problem. One of the other things I have been meaning to do is look at a few utube videos on taking the bolt apart. Thanks again for all the help I will post back after I resize the brass and try and chamber a few -
problem with a remington 700 Sa 308

I did try and used 1 of the fired Brazilian rounds and there is pressure charging and still very difficult extracting the spent brass. I am new to reloading and have done a fair amount of reading and was wondering if there might be a brass, round problem with it not meeting specks, I have never taken that bolt completely down but with the now fired brass does that tell more of a story? Thanks for the offering of help. -
problem with a remington 700 Sa 308
Ron Padilla replied to Ron Padilla's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
the cases have all been brass that is what has stumped me, and the Brazilian is new brass. -
I had this problem come up a while back, my sons and I were shooting some questionable ammo and after firing it was almost impossible to extract the spent case, I fired the rifle several more occasions using ammo that I had reloaded or good store bought ammo with out any problems until today. Today we went out to the Montgomery shooting complex and ran in to the same problem, this time it was a box of Brazilian ammo that we had picked up a while back, at first I thought it might be the stock as I installed a new archangel stock but realized that isn't the problem. If anyone has any ideas please let me know this is a new Remington that I don't have 50 rounds through it yet. Thanks

(Only) Lemoshine Brass Cleaning Method Results
Ron Padilla replied to GlockSpock's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
for what it is worth, I have read that if it is not rinsed well the brass will tarnish that is what most likely you are seeing, I mentioned in another thread that I got in to stainless wet tumbling on the cheap with a harbor freight tumbler that was on sale along with a 20%off coupon. the only thing I wish I would have done is bought the double drum tumbler, I use about half of the stainless media in the 1 tub and it will fit 50 rounds of 223 and have room left, and as one other person mentioned it was about a screw driver amount of the lemonshine and then rinsed well after the use. I was very impressed with outcome of the brass the primer pockets were very clean as well as the interior of the brass. -
I got in to it on the cheap. I bought a HF single drum tumbler with a 20% off coupon and bought the stainless media that came with a bag of limonize and jug of soap all for about 90.00 and the results have been great. I ran 50 cases of 223 yesterday and was very impressed with how they came out. All this was all done after de-priming and sizing. And I had already spent money on a tumbler some ground walnut shell that I got at petco and some other stuff, so I probably have more tied up in all the other stuff that I wont use now.

Not sure who taught the class at the church, but the one my son and I attended last fall was taught by the guy who writes articles for the local paper someone else here might recall his name or as other have mentioned contact the shooting complex to get info, that was where we went to do the shooting part of the class.

I didn't go back and reread but when does the agreement end with peta? Thanks
-
yup That's the one I have been looking at, how much do you think you guys will be asking for it.

oops posted twice my bad

of course you could try the harbor freight tumbler till you find the one you want on sale, I have been looking at the franklin tumbler, it has a window on the side you can look through and see what is going on, mid south carries them as well as others and range around 199.00 just fyi
-
of course you could go with a harbor freight tumbler to begin with and cost is a lot lower until you can find the tumbler you want on sale. I have been looking at the franklin model, midsouth is out of stock right now, but what is nice about it is that it has a window you can look in and see what is going on just an fyi.

We were in Lake Elsinore, about 40 mile up the 15 from Escondido, we would run down there every now and then if the was a broke down vehicle, we owned a mobile repair service as a part time gig for a few years, then everyone wanted to move here and give it a try.
-
and on another note I also reload in the garage but have been using a another propane heater to warm it when it has been extremely cold with no problems, but I do happen to have about five pounds of silica beads that I keep near in little baggies that I have poked holes in with a needle to absorb any moisture and keep one in the tube for the powder drop. I pull that one out every time I go to load and so far things have been good.
-
just a little off topic, but I like that handle, I did that one time with a propane griddle that I was trying to light. I bent over to look at what was going on and I finally got it to light but with a big poof of flame, and instantly, poof no eyebrows and the hair on my head was smoldering, whew what a day.

using Brasso with walnut shells in tumbler
Ron Padilla replied to seez52's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I tried and it didn't work, the best results I have had is with stainless media in a rotary tumbler using a very small amount of soap solution and the powder that came with stainless media. I have used the brasso on cases once cleaned and ready for loading, but will hold off now until the case has been loaded to try and polish. I don't want to take the chance of getting any of that solution inside the brass that is why I will hold off until done with reloading.
