  1. Some states are off limits because of their home state purchase requirements. Kommufornia's waiting period for example. Or some state that just has an odd law on the books that makes it a hassle for Wal-Mart to sell to you from out of state.
  2. The government believes there are around 210 legal firearms, and a further 50 million unlawful firearms in the country. 260 million firearms. Owned by between 80-100 million citizens. I think. It's 0753 and I don't think well until my morning caffeine fix has had time to kick in, so I could be thinking the wrong statistics, but that sounds right. Len: Couldn't agree more with you. Lotto scholarships, while great in theory, have been murderous in practice to the students. Too many students lose them because they were babied through high school and haven't learned how to study or really pay attention to the world around them. A lot of my classmates get their evening news from The Daily Show, which scares me.
  3. Politicians who thought political correctness and not offending anyone was more important than teaching us to learn from the past so we do not repeat the mistakes of our forefathers. The high school curriculum is a joke these days. My high school US History class started at Ft Sumter and ended at Hiroshima & Nagasaki. We didn't cover the Gold Rush, the Wild West, anything between 1900 & 1910, we glossed over the Depression and the reforms of FDR and his bunch of cronies. Government class was a bigger joke apparently. I got lucky and took online AP Government, but the rest didn't do squat. They didn't even cover the election process or the amendment process for the constitution. Hence why nobody knows anything about US History in your classroom Len. But if you want to meet a couple college students with an understanding of US History that might even spark some spirited debate and conversation, let me know if you're near ETSU sometime. I can round up some friends who actually have a clue.

    What the....

I've never had a problem from any of the half dozen Beretta Storm's I've shot... But then again, I'd rather have an H&K MP5 or clone with a semi-auto trigger pack personally.
  5. This is a situation where you can only answer for yourself when you're looking down the street and see them coming. Do you hoist the Stars & Bars once more and charge the Yankees like a screaming maniac, or do you make nice with them and surrender your guns and your honor? Or do you laugh at them when they can't find your guns because you put them with the moonshine still that the Yankees haven't been able to find in almost 100 years? (= "We pledge our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." Obviously the government has forgotten about that last one. Congressional and Senatorial term limits would be so nice... They might not like their colleagues as much with someone else calling the shots.
  6. I don't believe Remington makes any 7.62x54R ammo. Could be wrong, but I've never seen any. You can get it in Winchester White Box though. Which is just fine if you want new production, non-corrosive ammo for one. $17 per boxfor FMJ or soft points according to cheaperthandirt.com, they also have brass cased Wolf ammo for $13 per box.
  7. Cor-Bon DPX is your friend. I carry those in my S&W 642 and don't feel under-gunned. Well, only five rounds isn't so nice, but the rounds will hurt him more than they'll hurt my hand when they go bang since they're not +P and still have great performance out of a snub nose barrel.

    What the....

I fired one for a Glock 17 once. It wasn't bad. I'm not a big fan of converting a pistol to a carbine though. If I want to shoot a 9mm carbine, I know where to buy an MP5 clone or a Beretta Storm.
  9. To the best of my knowledge, there are no bolt action tubular magazined .22's. You'll probably have to settle for either single-shot or detachable magazine. Ruger 77/22 is about the only thing that comes to mind that will do the job for under $400. And that might be hard even then, because you'd want the heavy stainless barrel.
  10. Just a note, properly posted properties can prevent permit holders from carrying as well. Only LEO's are exempted everywhere they go. The language of the sign determines if permit holders may carry on the property. If it says: "Persuant to TCA C&V, no weapons are allowed on this property unless law enforcement or licensed by the state." Or something along those lines, you can carry anyway, but if it's just like it's written in TCA, nobody but LEO may carry.
  11. Below is the section of the code dealing with postings. I am not a lawyer, but the short version is, if they do not post the sign that is very similar to this: "Pursuant to § 39-17-1359 , the owner/operator of this property has banned weapons on this property, or within this building or this portion of this building. Failure to comply with this prohibition is punishable as a criminal act under state law and may subject the violator to a fine of not more than five hundred dollars ($500)" the sign holds no legal standing and all they can do is ask that you leave. The cute little circle and slash no weapon signs may be used in addition to the above, but not in place of. A simple "No weapons" sign is not legally binding. In short, if it does not say "Pursuant to Chapter & Verse of TCA, so on and so forth", all they can do is ask me to leave. If they ask and I refuse, then I can be charged with trespassing, but since I'm a nice guy and know they don't want my money or patronage anyway if they're asking the nice, responsibly armed citizens to leave, I'll take my money elsewhere. If they tell you that it's simply a rule that there be no weapons on the property, rather than in the building, they still aren't in compliance. They have to post at the edge of the property. I.E., large, easy to read signs at the entrances to the parking lots that can be read while driving. I've taken the liberty of highlighting some of the more important parts of this section of TCA by putting them in bold text. And as far as CYA actions on the part of the mall, section B is worth a chuckle. ************************** § 39-17-1359. Prohibition at certain meetings - Posting notice. (a) An individual, corporation, business entity or local, state or federal government entity or agent thereof is authorized to prohibit the possession of weapons by any person otherwise authorized by § 39-17-1351 - § 39-17-1360, at meetings conducted by, or on property owned, operated, or managed or under the control of such individual, corporation, business entity or government entity. Notice of such prohibition shall be posted. Posted notices shall be displayed in prominent locations, including all entrances primarily used by persons entering the building, portion of the building or buildings where weapon possession is prohibited. If the possession of weapons is also prohibited on the premises of any such property as well as within the confines of a building located on such property, the notice shall be posted at all entrances to the premises that are primarily used by persons entering the property. The notice shall be in English but a notice may also be posted in any language used by patrons, customers or persons who frequent the place where weapon possession is prohibited. In addition to the sign, notice may also include the international circle and slash symbolizing the prohibition of the item within the circle. The sign shall be of a size that is plainly visible to the average person entering the building, premises or property and shall contain language substantially similar to the following: Pursuant to § 39-17-1359 , the owner/operator of this property has banned weapons on this property, or within this building or this portion of this building. Failure to comply with this prohibition is punishable as a criminal act under state law and may subject the violator to a fine of not more than five hundred dollars ($500). (Nothing in this section shall be construed to alter, reduce or eliminate any civil or criminal liability that a property owner or manager may have for injuries arising on their property. © Any posted notice being used by a local, state or federal governmental entity on July 1, 2000 that is in substantial compliance with the provisions of subsection (a) of this section may continue to be used by such governmental entity. (d) The provisions of this section shall not apply to title 70 regarding wildlife laws, rules and regulation ***********************
  12. In 4 or 5 months, don't be surprised when you're paying for her HCP class and a Glock 19. (= Been there, done that.
  13. From everything I've read and looked at, and from when I've had an chance to shoot it, .357Sig is very nice. But it's too pricey for me to switch over to from 9mm just yet. Maybe after graduation when money isn't so tight.
  14. Now I know how the aerosol hairspray manufacturers have stayed in business over the years...
  15. Civil War Enthusiasts Reef, not wannabes.
  16. If they're anything like the fairgrounds show out here, they're not kidding. I figure 60% of the crowd at the last show I went to at the Appalachian Fairgrounds was in BDUs or Wal-Mart style camo outfits. And at least 50-60% of those had a weapon slung over their shoulder that they were trying to sell. The shows around here have more good old boys trying to sell off a gun or two than dealers with tables usually.
  17. Ask around at the gun shops in Greeneville about Bryant. You might get some responses that are less than stellar reviews of TAC2.
  18. For M1 Garands and Carbines, it's hard to beat the CMP now that they've actually got some carbines that will be sold to the public when they're done grading and inspecting them. As long as you're willing to do some work to fix up the weapon, (stocks are usually scratched up, bluing may or may not be in good shape, etc) it's a deal. It's how a cousin of mine got both of his M1's, best deal he ever made, two M1's for $1000 and he probably only spent another $150-200 fixing them up. http://www.odcmp.com/
  19. That sort of thing is why I'm afraid to get into reloading. I'll stick with WWB and Cor-Bon/Federal for now.
  20. Same basic method, but the delta ring was really tight for some reason. We had a lot of trouble getting it to actually stay pulled down to snap the quad-rails in place.
  21. I knew I forgot something... an ERGO pistol grip. Thanks Reef. Mike - A lot of people find the stock plastic pistol grip on AR-15's uncomfortable. Personally, I don't think they're that bad, but it's hard to beat the ERGO grips IMO. And replacing the stock grip is a good idea anyway, even if you keep the same style grip, you can get the trapdoor version with a storage compartment inside it.
  22. Consecutive serial numbers would be a nice touch as well IMO. My dad really likes .22LR's and I've considered getting a pair of consecutively serial numbered standard Ruger 10/22's at some point, one to give him, the other for myself, but that's something that I know would appeal to my father. I don't know about your brother, but it's something to think about.
  23. My girlfriend's grandfather saw a coyote look both ways before running across the street in front of his house. Apparently, the little buggers are getting smarter. When we go to visit him, I usually have my M4 in the trunk in case one comes along and needs to be taken care of before it gets near the cows.
  24. You have to be 21 to purchase a handgun from an FFL, that's federal law. You must be 18 to own a handgun in Tennessee. I'm not sure on the technical side of private party transfers, but I know you can receive a handgun as a gift once you're 18. I don't think you're supposed to sell a handgun to an 18, 19, or 20 year old in private party sales, but I assume it happens.
  25. It's comfortable, and it's a quick attach, which I like. No silly thumb screws to fight with, just a standard rail attachment like the XML I keep on my XD.
