  1. The 1993 LA race riots would also probably be considered a player in passing that piece of legislation. But yes, the attempt on Reagan was probably the biggest impetus for both in my opinion.
  2. All four of the major gun control laws of the last century are directly tied to a major emotional/traumatic event. 1934 - St. Valentines Day Massacre 1968 - Assassination of Robert Kennedy, and to lesser degrees, JFK and Martin Luther King Jr. 1986 - Assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan 1994 - John Brady getting shot and his wife making such a fuss about it
  3. Oh I'll be wearing a visible holster all week. Usually I carry IWB on days I have class so I don't have to deal with a freaked out left-wing certified lunatic instructor again... As for not giving money to Crowders, I'm right there with you preaching to the choir. I'll give you the list of things that are worth doing there though: 1.) Window shopping 2.) Fondling the Class 3 toys 3.) Flirting with the hot blonde girl behind the counter who packs a 1911 on her hip and shoots skeet on the weekends. 4.) See #3, with emphasis.
  4. Yes. Crowders & Mahoney's are both good window shopping stores. Byrd's has some nice stuff too. If you're willing to explore the boonies of East TN, there's some other places within 20 miles or so that are good too.
  5. Funny... not a day goes by when I'm not wearing an empty holster on campus... Since I'm one of the people who asked the higher ups at Campus Safety what their policies were about carrying to and from the school. You can check it in at the Campus Safety Office and they'll store it in the safe for you until you come back to get it. (Same place they store firearms for on-campus residents who want to make use of the service.) Or they'll tell you that you can follow the peaceable journey laws and leave it unloaded in your vehicle, with the ammo separated from the weapon. Nobody's ever given me any funny looks when my holster was accidentally exposed as I went through classes.
  6. They do kick like a mule. Fun... but the recoil was brutal shooting 00's at a 7 yard silhouette. #7's weren't so bad though.
  7. At best, you'll shave about $3-5 off of what Apple sells them for direct. Apple also offers free laser engraving of 2 lines of text on the back of the player when you order it direct from them. The price drop from last month is in effect now, and the iPod Classic 80gb is $249 now. Ordering from Apple gets you free shipping, and I don't think you have to pay sales tax on something from Apple direct in TN.
  8. It varies from state to state at what age a minor may legally own a long gun. Ability to legally purchase comes at 18 as per federal law. IANAL, but if memory serves, in Pennsylvania, it's age 14 or 16 to own a long gun. According to what I've been reading in the media, his mother bought him a Hi-Point 995 recently. Supposedly, they're your average Hi-Point, ugly as homemade sin, but functional and economically priced. As for the legality of giving her 14 year old a rifle... again, IANAL.
  9. 1 firearm, a live grenade, and 3 inert grenades constitutes an arsenal? Must've been the 30 mostly harmless Airsoft pieces that were mixed in there too... I'd hate to see what the media would call my gun safe.
  10. I'll settle for some tar and feathers... Maybe with a little boiling oil thrown in on top if I ask nicely?
  11. Currently... CorBon DPX 115gr +P, before those it was Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P. And when I first got my XD I used Winchester Ranger 115gr +P+ because it came in 50 round boxes for about $20.
  12. If they'd done those when I was in high school... I don't think more than 20% of the 175 people or so in my senior class would have graduated. Assuming they had any faculty left on staff after the searches...
  13. A female resident was assaulted outside one of the dorms here at ETSU over the weekend as well. It wasn't the full moon this weekend, what's with all the loonies coming out at once?
  14. Is it available in the store for the rest of us to fondle?
  15. Keep in mind, if your permanent residence is listed as Virginia, you'll be restricted to buying long guns in TN until you establish TN residency. Handguns require residency. Otherwise, what was said above.
  16. I call it the "Periodic Function Check"... Periodic is defined by whenever the mood strikes me to make sure all my guns are still in proper working order in case I actually need to use them. (=
  17. Correct. Open carry is legal at age 18 in Virginia with no permit of any kind.
  18. http://www.vcdl.org/Tonys/Tonys_911.mp3 That's the link to the 911 call recording that VCDL got from their FOIA request.
  19. Virginia does -not- require a permit for open carry. You can open carry at age 18. You are not required to show ID when open carrying. You are required to have ID on you when carrying -concealed-. The guys at the pizza place didn't show ID because they were not legally required to. Virginia's carry law requires open carry in restaurants that serve alcohol that are not posted as no-carry. They were simply following that law. The guy who called the cops was from Massachusetts and was unable to understand that open carriage of a firearm was perfectly legal.
  20. The AG up there isn't so bad... He finally sent Bloomberg a cease & desist letter... Six months after people started asking him to do so. It'd probably help more if they'd get rid of Tim Kaine in the next governor's election and replaced him with someone who will actually be pro-gun.
  21. Apparently, he was just being very direct and heated in asking his questions. When the cops started to escort him out, it looked like he wasn't very happy about it and wasn't going quietly, or cooperatively. It looked like he was trying to get away from the two cops frog-marching him out of the room. Resisting arrest and inciting a riot though? Nope. If you made me ask Kerry questions, I'd probably get a little excited and blunt too, mostly because I'd finally be able to ask the man where I can find the puppet strings that make him flip-flop so impressively.
  22. Here's the problem, if everyone is given the same coverage, for-profit hospitals don't get paid any more than non-profits or not-for-profits will. Charges will be the same, reimbursement will be the same. Hospitals won't make any money, and won't be able to get new equipment because they simply can't get the capital. They say they're going to guarantee access by making up the cost difference in government subsidies, creating a universal plan, and requiring insurance companies to cover you if you pay the premium, irregardless of pre-existing conditions or age. How is that not socialized medicine? We're paying more in taxes so that everyone can have the same health care. The uninsured aren't the problem when it comes to ER volume. TennCare/Medicaid patients on the other hand, are. So are frivolous lawsuits. Those with no insurance will either pay you in cash, or not pay at all and add additional costs in collection fees later. TennCare/Medicaid will pay you whatever the set rate is. Usually, about 20% less than what it really costs you to provide the service. So the hospital loses money. Preventative care is a great idea. Try educating the masses on that concept beyond childhood vaccinations, flu shots, and condoms as a way to prevent unwanted pregnancy and STDs. Universal Health Care will just increase the burden all of us that already pay for health care have to pay. Financially, time, and in lost longevity due to lack of innovation afterwards. Pharmaceutical companies will stop developing new drugs as often because they will simply not make any money on them. Where's the incentive when there's no profit? One of the key principles behinds all the candidates health care plans is universal coverage. No disqualifications for pre-existing conditions. Saying we won't cover you unless you stop smoking would be a big no-no under these plans. Largely because, according to these political types, everyone should have health care. And denying smokers the right to free or cheap health insurance is bad. They vote too. And the Tobacco industry would hate to lose all their customers because they quit smoking just so the government would give them their free health insurance. They might stop giving us campaign money... Then we can't run the country from a former malarial swampland. Point 5 is true in all respects, and would be great, if there was a feasible way to bring that about even further than we already have. When was the last time you saw somebody come down with a case of the measles? Or cholera? Or Polio? The 49 million Americans without insurance statistic is flawed. Cut that number in half and you're probably closer to the truth. The statistics used by proponents of Universal Health Care and Socialized Medicine are bloated and incorrectly reported. Any single person who goes without health insurance for one day out of the year is considered to be uninsured for the purposes of that statistical study. More conservative numbers, which count only those who go without insurance for more than 6-9 months out of the year put the number closer to 20-25 million, including illegal immigrants. I saw one study that put the number at around 12 million, not including illegal immigrants.
  23. Even if the government starts handing out grants to buy new equipment, it won't go to the hospitals that need it most, it will go to the big facilities that have the best request for funding written up. University Medicals and the like will get the new stuff, while smaller places like Takoma Regional Hospital down in Greeneville, won't get anything. It's nothing but an emotionally based plea to the less educated voting public. And I got bored in class last night and went looking on campaign websites. Every candidate on both sides seems to use the same template for their site. And every democrat candidate has the same general plan to overhaul health care and provide free coverage for everyone. The box and what's inside are the same, it's just the shiny wrapping paper that changes from candidate to candidate.
  24. I've heard quite a bit about this, a friend of mine was one of the guys at the pizza place during that incident. I'm also a member of the VCDL, so I got the email updates during the entire debacle. MCPD is among my least favorite jurisdictions as a result.
