And even when their predictions are wrong, they never admit to it and still talk like they had been saying the whole time the snow was going to miss us. Basically weather people are only good for telling you what the weather is like right now, and also how it was yesterday. Anyone who can walk outside can do that.

I was in the grocery store last night, and they still had plenty of milk and bread. Made me glad that everyone has finally stopped all the panic buying when the news mentions snow. Now if the county would stop dumping all this stuff on the roads for no reason things would be in great shape around here.

Man, I like your way of thinkin. To still be messin with people's minds while you're a zombie would be funny. I'm bettin all your new zombie friends would even pause for a second to laugh a little.

I agree. The OP wasn't asking for anything to be changed here. In short he was asking if the majority of the members here were racist, to which we all basically replied in a round about way "no". I do have to wonder if the OP is signed up on many other forums, because if so he would have already known that you have one or two here or there that will make those kinda comments. He would also know that the only thing he really has to fear is that he will be accepted by the community, fit in well, and become friends with members there. That's when the real insulting and offending comments begin.

Converting block basement to gun room/man cave
MCSCOTT replied to a topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
This is something that I've always wanted to do, but just don't have a basement. Moisture would definately be my biggest concern in any basement. I would have to make absolutely sure that there wouldn't be a chance of any flooding due to any plumbing issues, as well as weather. I've known way too many people, even ones who have basement apartments, that ended up having flooding issues that ruined everything. I would definately go with slat wall or something similar instead of pegboard. If you wanted to go with a different look you might also look into using old barn lumber as paneling. I know someone who had their hunting room done this way and it turned out great, plus you can usually find someone tearing down an old barn, or with one that is falling down, that would give you the lumber for free. The upside to using the basement is you could have a vault door put in and turn the whole basement into a gun safe. Again though, moisture would be my biggest concern. -
Definately look at them in person and pay attention to the depth. I would bet that 2 of my scoped rifles wouldn't fit in there. Something is better than nothing, and in alot of cases thieves are just looking to steal whatever they can grab quickly, and wouldn't take the time to tackle prying that open unless they knew for sure there wouldn't be anyone around for a while. I've personally looked at things like this, and have decided to just save up for a good fireproof safe. Right now there are eyes on my house pretty much 24/7 so I'm not really too worried about theft. Fire protection though is something that I worry about every single day here lately because my dad has started handing down some of the family guns which for sentimental reasons can't be replaced at any cost.

This thread has been a great read. Lots of great points that I hadn't taken into consideration before. I will have to be one of the head for the hills kinda guys. I have a place where wildlife should be plentiful for a little while, and there's plenty of water as well with not many people in the area. Also the people that are in the area are either family or long time family friends, and most do everything they can to live off the land as it is and have plenty to share. As long as the group you are living around is close, you will always have some protection from the refugees mentioned as well as the gangs that are looking to steal from you, so that is a definate plus for getting to know the folks in your area and knowing you can all count on each other. Of course it is fact that the game population will be destroyed in a matter of time with all the other folks that will be trying to live off the land, so as horrible as it sounds I would then have to resort to cannibalism I suppose. Instead of eating the cow, set it out in plain view as bait for those that would be wanting to steal it........ None of that last part is anything I really want to seriously think about, but usually when I hear the word "survival", the terms "any means necessary" and "whatever it takes" usually come to mind. Sadly though I have no idea what I would do about medicine. Even though I don't currently have a need for anything much, I know at some point the need would come up. That makes me really want to do some more reading up on natural remedies. Every bit of that goes out the window in the case of a zombie attack. When that happens my plan is to load all my ammo up and head to a decent building I can get on the roof of, then have fun shooting at all the zombies on the ground 'til the ammo runs out. After that I'll just give up and go get bitten so I can join them I guess. Looks like my plan in either kinda disaster will end up with me having to eat people.

Welcome to TGO. I think you should stick around. As with anything in this area there are those kinda references popping up from time to time, but for the most part you wont have any problems with this bunch from what I've seen. I've seen and heard memphis referred to as that several times and even though I personally wouldn't post that kinda thing, I also know that some folks are going to from time to time. There's alot of good folks and knowledge on here, so as with anything you have to enjoy the good and try to overlook the few bad ones.

I pretty much agree there. Birdshot might work ok in alot of HD situations, but by my way of thinking it could also put you in more danger than you would have been in if you hadn't tried to stop the BG. I shoot it in my HD shotgun from time to time if I'm just shooting for fun, but when it's at home it is loaded with 00 or at the very lease #4. We can never really know what the situation will be when the HD gun is needed, but I just have to hope that I can get a shot off that is not in the direction of any of my loved ones. It can be argued that we can never be sure if we can get this type of shot in a HD situation, but it can also be argued that we may not know for sure where exactly our loved ones will be in the situation. Personally I at least like knowing my ammo will do the job, that way all I have to worry about is doing my part in the situation.

I'd say offer anywhere around $200 or a little more or less, but I wouldn't go any higher on it than $250.
-
X2 Those do say they work in pump guns, but alot of the ones I've seen specifically say single and double barrel ONLY.
-
It really all depends on the particular gun. Like mentioned you can get them at Wal Mart for anywhere between $185 and $235 or so plus tax with no scope. To me that would mean I wouldn't go over $250 for one that is used with a cheap scope on it. All depends on the gun though, because some are worth more than that.

Happy New Year everyone. It's kinda all gotten boring since I quit drinking. Use to spend every New Years weekend offroading in Summertown. Last year though, my g/f had to work late and then had to be back in at 3 a.m. I think, so we ended up sleeping right through it. This year she is off tomorrow, but she has to work 'til about 10 tonight. Looks like I'll just be sittin at home alone most of the night playin COD. I use to have an exciting life. :-\

My boss printed this story out yesterday and brought it to me. He then had to point out the fact that "this guy can kill a deer in his underwear with a stick, and you can't even kill one while you're wearing camo and have a gun". I've only seen 3 deer in the woods all year long, and those were all on the same day.
-
That's correct from what I've heard. My boss' son-in-law just went though this process just so he could buy a handgun up there. Between getting all the paperwork filled out and everything done, I think it took him almost a year before he could legally purchase a firearm up there. I would try everything in my power to get out of having to move up there. From what all he's told me they basically don't want any firearms in that state. With that kinda mindset that state will most likely end up going the same direciton that Cali has gone where firearms are concerned. They're making plans to move here before too much longer.

This is always how I try to think for the most part, especially since the younger ones are usually better to eat. I just never was able to do it though, and nowadays I would let one walk with a fawn. Years ago during bow season I ended up hunting on the ground one evening because I got to the woods late. Hadn't been there long at all, and wasn't really paying attention good to the area just yet, when a doe walked up about 20 yards away. Woulda been an easy bow shot, but right before I got ready to draw her fawn walked right up to me and was just staring at me. Darn thing had that whole "please don't shoot my momma" look on his face and I just couldn't do it. Kinda ruined me on my old kill em all mentality.

I voted yes, only because I don't want pancakes. Blueberry waffles are better, and bacon is better when it's dipped in syrup that has been mixed with butter and filtered though blueberry waffles. Mmmmmm.....I think I'm going to Waffle House after work.

Sounds like a decent "start" so far. I too have a Marlin 60 .22 that I got in a trade a while back. It makes a pretty good backup squirrel gun should something ever happen that I can't use my Ruger 10/22. I would if I were you pick up a 10/22 at some point though for hunting the tree rats and just general plinking here and there. Personally I've been thinking of picking up a Walther P22 for handgun plinking, but other than that that would really be the only use I would have for it. The Glock 23 should be good for your CC needs, but I also like to have a full size .45 on the nightstand. Mine personally is an XD, but I'd also like to go over to the 1911 side of things eventually. As for the shotgun, the Mossberg 500 will be good enough for hunting, but you should look into getting a Remington 870 with a much shorter barrel for HD, and then you may get another longer version for hunting. The .270 will be good for deer hunting, but I would also pick up an AR-15 for varmit hunting and HD. There are many others to consider as well, AK's, SKS's, and also I like my cheap little Hi-Point 9mm Carbine for a small plinking/HD rifle. Basically look at the caliber and type of gun you are wanting, and what purpose it serves for you. Once you get one caliber/type of gun, for each purpose....then buy a second in the same class to have as a back up for the first one. Once you have that start hoarding ammo for each. You did say you were wanting to build an arsenal..

This is a tough decision. Of the ones that I have I absolutely can't go without.. XD45 10/22 M77 Mark II .280 Rem AR-15 .223 Browning A-5 I have several different shotguns, but the A5 is a Belgium made Light Twelve that belonged to my grandfather, so I'll never get rid of it. The M77 is a tough choice over my Remington 700 BDL .270, but all in all it just seems to me that it shoots much better. Also the XD45 is a tough choice over my Glock 22 since the Glock has the Lasermax. The 10/22 and the AR-15 are easy choices though that I would never want to get rid of. 5 Guns isn't enough....

Howdy from down in Columbia.

I would say go for a .243 bolt action of some sort. You can usually find a fairly good .243 just about anywhere that isn't too costly. Youth models of that caliber seem to be fairly plentiful as well. The 30-30 is an option being as you already have it, but even though I can see many uses for mine nowadays, I just never was fond of it as a kid. There were several factors in why I did it, but I missed several deer with mine. Switched over to a bolt action .270 and never missed another one.

Looks like that'll be a good choice for what you're wanting. I've got an older 336 myself and it's a great shooting rifle. Personally the SKS is or use to be a great choice for a cheap zombie killer, but I haven't run across one that was really worth the money in over 2 years. I use to see them from time to time, in great shape, in the $150 range, but those days seem to be long gone and that prices is pretty much doubled. I remember about a year ago I saw one at a yard sale, and asked how much it was. The guy said "I thought I'd try to get $300 for it", to which I replied "I thought I'd buy two of them for that much". After looking around more after that though I realize his price seems to be about where everyone is at on them. Then on top of that the ammo isn't really as cheap and easy to find as it use to be.

Honestly as bad as it sounds this was my first though. The ones she says "jumped" her obviously didn't do her any harm, or take anything of that much importance to her. Had they beaten her and left her for dead I would have to guarantee she would have a different opinion on things. To me people like this always end up just sounding like someone who is scared of firearms. They think since they are terrified of them that no one should own one. Heck, I hate bees but that doesn't mean I think bee keeping should be banned. Also leaves me wondering if maybe she took her HCP course after she was mugged, and couldn't pass the course. Since she can't carry a gun she feels like no one else should either...

I agree with everyone else on finding a shop locally. No matter what kinda bow you buy, you're going to want to get it set up for you as the shooter. Pick out the type of release you like, as well as the type of peep sight you like, that way everything can be setup or at least measured for while you're there. Things like your arrows will also have to be cut down to the length you need. With all that in mind I don't see how the big chains ever sell any bows out of their catalogs unless the person buying has already been shooting and knows their draw length and arrow length. After that get you a good target to shoot at, and practice all you can. When I was bow hunting all the time we would start shooting in the middle of the summer to practice up for deer season. To me the target shooting was just as much fun as the hunting.

X2, If I rack mine it's a waste of the one that's alread in the chamber. On top of that, if someone's in my house that doesn't belong there, I'm not really interested in scaring them away just so they can come back at a different time.
