Nashville Armory IDPA Feb 12 - 7:00
oarsman replied to JimHouchin's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
I'm not worried. It's like Jim says; we just need time to mature. My friend Patrick and I ran our Atlanta match smoothly, but there were a few hiccups in the beginning. I'm looking forward to when IDPA puts out the new rulebook and begins training SOs again. As shooters at our match gain experience, some will naturally gravitate towards becoming SOs, and Mick and I will suggest that path to others. That will help out with the two-bay situation, which again is how the Atlanta match was organized. Later on, when more quality ranges come online in Nashville, some of the SOs may become interested in running their own matches. That may be years from now, but I'm hoping for it, if only to selfishly get my own shooting fix. I don't know about you guys, but two indoor matches a month doesn't quite do it for me. Thanks again to Robert, Darryl, Michael, Rick and everyone else who helped out with the match last night. -

I'm glad to hear you guys had a good time. In the future, we will be able to use the other bay starting at 8:00. I consider three stages to be a minimum, so I'm sorry you guys only got two for your money tonight. The goal ultimately is four, even if the fourth is only a bill drill. We can do this as shooters increase in skill (speed) and with better stage design (my responsibility) and starting on time (also my responsibility). The only thing I have zero control over is the cost of the match. You'll have to speak to range management about that one. -

Thanks Jim for reminding everyone about the match. I definitely miss being there, and I'm curious how the stages are working out. I hear there's a bigger crowd tonight, and I hope you get all three in. -
Three is best, but you can survive with two if you don't shoot too many extra shots. I designed three stages for tomorrow, each requiring 12 shots. By the way, I will not be there tomorrow. Robert from Gallatin Gun Club and Darryl M. who were both there last time will be running it in my absence. -David

Well, sbcman, I "need" a match every week! When I was in Atlanta, I'd often shoot indoor matches 2 nights a week, and occasionally 3. Coulda done 4, but I would have exploded from sensory overload...

Glad to have you, Pat. By the way, our schedule is changing slightly. Instead of every other Tuesday, we will have matches on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. So, our next match which would have been on Feb 5 will now be on Feb 12. And, FYI I will be out of town on business that week, so I am ironing out who will be the match directors for the evening. Cheers, -DP

Yup! Hammer down at 7:00 tonight.
-
About 50-60 for most people. Minimum round count was 39.
-
My pleasure. We had a good group; they were excited to be there, and seemed eager to pitch in and break down at the end of the match. I couldn't ask for more. I'll be looking for you next month.
-
PC7, I will email out the scores to everyone in a couple or three days. It should go quicker the next time around. Eventually I hope to have them on the Nashville Armory website. Pat, the match will be on every other Tuesday. If their business ever drops off, we may go to weekly, but I don't see that happening any time soon. At least, not until there are 2 or 3 more really good ranges in the metro area. See you on the 22nd!

A little after 9:00. That's pretty much the goal, though we can go a little longer if we need to. That group size is pretty typical for indoor matches, but may grow some since this is the only match in town (for the time being). You should try it. There's no comparison between static shooting and this kind of match.
-
Understood, hognut. I hope you'll come sometime so that we can introduce the indoor shooters to you and you can talk up the MCTS matches.
-
In the excitement of the night I forgot to mention the Dickson matches, and that is a big no-no in my book. MCTS runs great matches out there, and I'll be happy to introduce HOGNUT next time he's at a NA match.
-
Fantastic. Thank you. I'll be setting up at 6:00, but anytime between 6 and 7 is helpful. If you plan to shoot, you'll be watching the range's safety video at 6:30. See you there.
-
Absolutely. Hope to see you there, Pat.

You'll need to review the gear requirements in the IDPA rulebook, which can be found at www.idpa.com. Make sure you bring a cover garment as well (a jacket, untucked shirt, photographer's vest, etc.). The new shooters briefing this week will require all participants to watch the range's own safety video, since a lot of the shooters will likely be new to Nashville Armory. Hope to see you there-

@DMark: Yes, Nashville Armory is a club. The paperwork is in and the dues have been paid, but it hasn't been posted to the IDPA website yet. @RobertNashville: Don't worry about being/not being competitive. We're all there to have fun, be safe and challenge each other to get better. Oh, and to have Mexican food, margaritas and maybe a stogie or two afterwards... As for taking the penalty for not kneeling, that's by the rules just as HOGNUT says, and that's the way I ran my match in Atlanta. There was a gentleman down there who also had major knee issues, so I didn't do many kneeling stages. On the few stages that did require it, the kneeling happened only at the end of the stage, so he wouldn't have to get up and still shoot. Now, I can't eliminate kneeling or prone stages entirely, because that is a skill that shooters like to improve, and it does provide needed variety in stage design.

Itchy has the prices right. The shooter limit will be 30, but I won't have a limit the first couple of matches. The number of stages depends on the number of shooters. If we have 15, we'll get in four stages. If we have 25, we'll have three. If we max out at 30, we'll still try for three, but I'll have to simplify the stages. The inaugural match is still set for January 8th!
-
Those guys at MCTS are quite helpful, as Rick says. Make sure to visit them. Also, I'll be running an indoor match at Nashville Armory every other Tuesday, starting January 8th. You'll be good to go there as well after you replace the barrel. Hope to see you there and in Dickson.
-
Yes, January 8th will be the inaugural match. Be there at 6:30 to watch their safety video, and please watch the one from GADPA that I posted earlier. I have a K frame as well, so maybe I'll shoot SSR with you at some point. I have a Model 19. What are you shooting?
-
We'll probably do a little of that eventually, but not at first and not every month. We're going to have a lot of beginners that will need the predictable, structured IDPA match for awhile. About the only non-standard IDPA thing I've done to date is blind stages. I do want to bring in shotgun and rifle in the future, though. It depends on what we're allowed to do. The range will most likely require slugs for the shotguns. By the way, MC, the matches won't always be the second and fourth Tuesday. It will be every other week. I'm told our off-weeks will be used as a ladies night.

Guys, I talked to the manager at Nashville Armory tonight about reloads. Their policy remains that reloads are not allowed, due to insurance requirements. On another note, they will be sending in their application to be an official IDPA club shortly.
-
Mark, that is my understanding. They have already become an IDPA sponsor (I think they meant to purchase the club membership).
-
I think the range will probably be keeping everyone updated about IDPA on their website. They've mentioned something about it, but nothing's in motion yet. It would help if those of you who aren't on Facebook would mention it individually to management. In the meantime, feel free to post questions here or send me a private message.
