Last month I was in the same boat as you . Wanting a cheaper 1911 that would function relaibly but not with the big price tag. I chose the Rock Island Armoy "GI" model. It is plain with no extra features. I love it . Here is the link to the thread I made and it has the picture. http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/84996-got-a-all-metal-gun-that-ill-keep/

I have been looking at my factory carry Speer Gold Dot rounds in .40S&W . They seem to not have any crimp at all. If any it was just enough to make the case staright again and take out the flare from the expander die . Am I right ? It just seems that way when I look at them. Making me wonder if I even need much of a crimp at all when I do my 9mm's ?

Thanks guys . I am using the Hornady single stage lock-n-load press. I figure that starting out with single stage will let me understand how each Die works and really understand the principles of reloading. Later down the line I'll get a fancy dancy press. Keep the good information coming its all very helpfull

I have the Lee 3 Dies set to reload 9mm . Do I need to go ahead and ALSO get the seperate Carbide Factory Crimp Die ? Or will the 3 Die set be ok ?

Guns And Leather in Greenbrier had a Ruger P95 stainless slide (the older style frame) yesterday for $229. I am a sucker for a Ruger P-series. They run so well and ultra reliable. I seen this and was so sad due to NO MONEY and my wife was outside in the car (can't buy a gun while under the "rule" of the wife LOL ) :shake: . But anyways just letting you Ruger guys know that this is seems like a great price to me . GNL has always been a good place to shop too. Good luck ! Buy that dude and have fun !

Cleaning guns after shooting corrosive ammo
tercel89 replied to tercel89's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thanks guys . Sounds great -
I'm one of the few that like them plain and simple. No long beaver tails , no extended safety levers , no full length guide rods. Just plain jane. I just took the wood off and put on some military surplus black plastic grips.

That is exactly what I did a few weeks ago. I got a Rock Island Armory and it runs like a well oiled machine. Plus I got a bunch of money left over for ammo ! Here read this , it's my thread I made about it and a picture of it. Plus it's a 70-series with no safety crap inside . http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/84996-got-a-all-metal-gun-that-ill-keep/

Cleaning guns after shooting corrosive ammo
tercel89 replied to tercel89's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Ok thanks guys. So it seems the warmer the water the better it disolves the "salts" and corrosive minerals from what I understand . -
I've always been told that you should spray down the inside of the chamber and barrel of surplus rifles with something like Windex that has Amonia in it. Supposedly it neutralizes the corrosive stuff. Then wipe it down with a wet rag and then clean like normal with regular cleaners like Hoppes and such. I have never had a problem with this , but what do you guys do after shooting corrosive ammo ?

Around Thanksgiving time I got a like new/mint Ruger P95 there with the case , papers and mags for $269 which was great in my opinion. But I went in there a few days ago and saw a used beat-up and scratched up Springfield Armory 1911 for $869  . I asked the guy if that price was correct and he said yes like I was a moron. It looked like it was dragged behind a truck on a creek gravel road. So this place is "hit and miss" .

Awesome that it's a 70's series ! No safety crap. I know that the Israeli made CZ clones are very nice ! I just got a RIA 1911 but damn , this may be next , whoops , did I say that ? Robin48 it looks great !
-
Did they recommend you using a better spring just right when you buy it or after the factory ones needs replacing ?
-
Hey thanks for that link. Thats the exact old style plastic ones I am looking for .
-
I like wood but not so thick . I'm even looking at some solid aluminum ones for $28 .
-
HA HA , you're right about whatever tree is in the lot ! Like a wild growing beech tree or maple , LOL :meh: . But they are built way nicer than I thought !

I got a Rock Island Armory 1911 GI full size. I am extremely happy . The way its made and all is great. I wanted a good functioning 1911 that I could throw into my vehicle when I'm checking on the huntig land and hunting and this and that where I would not mind it getting scratched or dinged real bad. One that was inexspensive but functioned great. Well I got it. It is built just as good as my Springfield Armory Mil-Spec 1911. I ran some rounds through it and its smooth as butter . I am reloading 9mm now so I may get a 45 die and start on it . I got this used and at a good deal. I dont think these RIA's are cheap , just good "in-expensive" 1911's . They are far from cheap . very good quality . I wanted a good GI type with no bells and whistles and this fits the deal just great . The only bad thing , but not really "bad" is the wood is a little fat or thick. I am trying to find some thinner old style plastic checkered style black grips for it . Plus it's a series 70 style so no crappy safety things to get in the way  Here she is .

Is it a series 80 or 70 style ?
-
The Beltman is awesome . I have one. But also check out SOE which is Special Operations Equipment located online. They are in Camden Tn and make lots of very stiff belts that will hold your gun tight and ridgid. I am getting one in 2 months. Check them out. All their items are made in the M***** F***** USA . That is their logo , seriously ! When you read about them you will understand what that logo is about LOL. They are seriously good items !

I'd sure liked to get my grip safety pinned down like a lot of the older guys would do back in the old days
-
Well I giess it would be ok if it ends up looking or being just like a regular 1911 after installing the regular thumb safety. I just didnt know if 1911 frame holes were drilled different on the ambi-safety models. Does it just plug right in ?
-
I can't tell from their website , but does any of the tactical ones come with a single thumb safety ? I want to stay away from ambi-safety.
-
I copied it here ........... "My safe is full of Baers, Browns, DW's, Colt....... I gave $425 for my RIA compact tactical. It's a hell of a lot of gun for the money. It is not on par with the others but I didn't expect it to be. It runs, it shoots minute of bad guy. That's all I expected and it's what I got." And that is exactly what I would want it to do if I get one
-
so far it sounds real nice. I was just concerned about the few bad things I read. The few horror stories of sights coming off and bad machining causing excessive wear and things like that . I know there will be problems with anything but just like to cover all grounds. Someone even stated that they used an alloy of some sort for the slide.
-
Even more better  On my Springfield that was the first thing I did . I replaced the MSH and the ILS (key lock) with a "normal" one.
