  1. Call me an absolutist if you want, but I can't get past the "shall not be infringed" part that follows "the right to keep and bear arms".

    This.

That's pretty much it for me, really. Look at it this way, though. As well, just like any gun-restricting law, what does limiting/illegalizing long gun carry actually accomplish? Does it stop a crook from waltzing down the road? Well...

And heck, if someone's uncomfortable with X unknown person carrying a long gun 'round, what's different about a handgun or any weapon, really? Ehh... and in places where carrying loaded long guns is hunky-dory, doesn't seem like there are many reports of mass shooters blending in with the AR/levergun/tactic00lshotgun-toting masses...

  2. Glad no one got hurt, and a great lesson for all of us. Even if you 'remember' the gun being unloaded when you messed with it earlier in the day... check, double check, triple check...

  3. Always great to see a pro-gun business instead of an anti. Matter of fact, yesterday I went to our auto mechanic - Robert's Auto Repair in Athens - and he's got various pro-gun stickers on his door... when so many businesses are turning against us, it's great to see some small businesses that still have sanity.

  4. I've had quite a few family members keel over from cancer. They were a bit younger than the average age people live to, as well, in their 50's. Two uncles, one aunt-in-law... grandfather had some kind of cancer that didn't affect him much, didn't get him. I dunno, it's weird, and also a little concerning for my sake. Something that seems to be a bit of a reoccurring theme is quite a few people who get into dope seem to end up with cancer... I dunno if that's true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me. The two uncles of mine who died from cancer got pretty screwed up in their youth a lot, on top of heavy smoking and in one case, drinking... more reason for me being a teetotaler.

But regardless of that, it is true that it seems a lot more people end up with cancer in today's day and age. Really weird...

  5. Hm-hm, thanks for the input, guys.

I'll say this - some of you recommend a Marlin '94. I was set on getting that a few months ago... and I'd like to have one of those as well. However... though I'm not a fan of synthetic stocks... more of a traditional fellow, blued steel and shimmering walnut... it is better and more durable from a practical standpoint. Not to mention the rarity and questionable quality of new 1894s...

Anyway, again, thanks for the input, all. I feel pretty confident with getting a 77/357... we'll see if I can scrounge up some funding before too long! Hah...

  6. Hey fellas.

Well, I've been trying to dig up information on the Ruger 77/357 bolt gun. I'd like to hear from some TGO'ers in addition to my ongoing Google searches. After researching the versatility of .357/.38 guns and the .357 cartridge itself, I'm looking hard at a 77/357 as an all-purpose rifle... hunting small to medium game, in rain, sleet, snow, or shine. Readily-available ammo, and hard-hitting in the event of an HD situation or the SHTF I dream about... any info on this gun, prices on used ones, reliability, quirks, etc. is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  7. Hey, all. A few days ago, I shot a question off to my district's representative, Mr. Scott DesJarlais... I couldn't find out a whole lot about his stance on that glorious old Second Amendment, so I took a chance and emailed him. The response I got seems (and knowing politicians, surely is) rather canned/standardized, but it's still pleasing to me, overall.

    His response:

    "Dear Patrick,

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns regarding potential gun control legislation. I truly appreciate having the benefit of your views on this important issue.

It is hard to imagine anything more horrifying than the tragic shooting that occurred this past December at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As a parent with three school age children of my own, I join many other concerned parents in recognizing the need to create a safer learning environment in our schools. I believe that it is of the utmost importance for us to enact sensible measures to protect our children. However, I agree with a majority of Tennesseans in expressing my concern that the Obama administration and Senate Democrats are using this catastrophic event as a way to limit our Second Amendment rights.

An outright ban on certain types of firearms, as well as the implementation of universal background checks, does little to deter criminals who currently obtain firearms illegally. Instead of creating new overreaching federal statutes, the federal government needs to enforce the gun laws that already exist. Likewise, I simply cannot support any measure that infringes on our constitutional right to bear arms. I truly believe that after the Sandy Hook tragedy, Americans deserve a comprehensive and effective strategy to protect their families from such senseless acts. Unfortunately, the President has chosen to advance a political agenda that in the end will have little impact on stemming gun violence while further eroding the rights of law-abiding citizens.

The Second Amendment makes plain to criminals that their targets have the right to defend themselves, their families, and their property. If criminals already do not follow the law, gun-control legislation will only hinder the safety of law-abiding citizens. As a proud supporter of our Second Amendment, I intend to oppose any legislative effort to infringe upon our constitutionally guaranteed rights defined in the Second Amendment.

It is an honor and a privilege representing you and all of Tennessee's Fourth Congressional District. Please let me know if you have additional comments or question on this or any other legislative matter.

    Sincerely,

    Scott DesJarlais
    Member of Congress"
