Does anybody know of any difficulty in drill and tapping a ca.1983 Mossberg 500 for a Weaver scope mount? I have heard rumors not to tap because of aluminum receiver. I have the right mount from Weaver but will need to take to gunsmith (some distance away) for drilling and tapping. I sort of want to be sure before I destroy gun and I have had gunsmiths do the wrong thing before. I don't want side saddle mount, so don't even bring it up.

I need help in finding year of manufacture of a Mossberg 500. I am getting ready to have it drilled and tapped (no it is not already drilled and tapped!) for scope base and mounts. There are two different bases, dependent on year of manufacture. I have already contacted Mossberg, but no replies. I though maybe somebody out there might already have a list and could look it up for me. Serial Number is: J046254 Also, does somebody have any pics on how to shim barrel?

Steps in the invasion of a country (Ranger style) 1. Hold committee meetings on Patch to be awarded. 2. Hold meetings and propose new Beret Flash for Invasion. 3. Decide on really macho name for Operation. 4. Hold committee meeting to design neato campaign ribbon for operation. 5. See if Marines have set up an Officer Club yet, since they have been there for six months! Sheesh, You guys and your patches and beanies! "Okay, gunny, I'm on the beach just tell me who I can kill!" (Only Marine concern!)

"GOD does not work evil. He gives man reason and understanding to avoid the pitfalls of evil. It is when man disregards his GOD-given reason that he falls into the pitfalls of error and destruction" Kahlil Gibran My reason tells me to carry. My wife I recently survived a Tornado, having a home torn off right over our heads. Others were not so lucky, including a 6 month old infant in the next house. Many people have come to me and told me I was touched by GOD and he saved me personally. I have to ask, if this is so, than why did GOD kill the baby? If this was a personal touch than it personal to everyone, including homicide of an infant. I think the truth is that we have to accept that GOD is a painter with a giant paint roller, bringing in many factors and creatures, he doesn't paint with a small artist's brush. I was under the roller and the baby wasn't. I don't try to look into any more detail than that. I really believe that man in general tries to see himself as far more important than he really is. I expect GOD to provide a liveable world, which he has. I look to my own GOD-given assets to wind my way through that world. I carry!

I'm 65 and exhibit none of the characteristics you mention. I still run an on line State Guard Officer and NCO Academy, and I am still active in leadership positions in my community. The behavior you describe is not usually normal in the mid to late 60s. It sounds to me like this gentleman needs some medical evaluation as there is more wrong than just age. Remember too, mean young men just turn into bitter old men. However some of the things you mention make it seem more than just this. For all of you who are ready to start taking cars and guns away from 60 year olds, just remember, there are a bunch of 16-25 year olds out there that think that nobody over 45 is competent to drive or have guns! Humor aside, you have some serious "talkin doctor" work to do here. My heart goes out to you.

Libertarian here. Just to set the record straight, the United States of America became one of the Big Ten of Socialist Countries under the administration of George Bush culminating with the massive Bailout . The government has taken over the major banks and corporations are using taxpayer money to meet their payroll. That is socialism guys. The government subsidy of Industry and banking now makes up more than 50% of the future national taxpayer payout. It is called National Socialism but it is socialism none the less. You didn't have to wait for the dreaded Liberal Democrat destruction of the Free Market System, it has already occured under Republican steerage. I know better than to blame either party alone, both parties screwed me. Welcome to the National Socialist Republic of America Comrade!

Don't order from GlockStore. I ordered one three months ago for my Glock 23 and I am still waiting. Find somebody that has actually stocked up on them and has one to ship.

Retired School Teacher here too! Also retired Marine (30 years). I carry S&W J-frames and have Mossbergs at home for hunting and House Defense. I have never felt undergunned or "low class". Also have a BERSA, but found J-frames easier to carry, nothing wrong with the BERSA though. I also was raise with guns, did some trapping when I was a kid, and consider a gun primarily as a tool. The guns you named are good tools.

I have noticed that pretty much all of the detectives and Fed agents on TV carry C3. I say this because they are always racking their slide after drawing their weapon. Is this normal procedure for plain clothes police? I know they have technical advisors so I would guess they are taught the agency procedures. Uniform LEOs are normally shown drawing with "one in the tube". Also, FBI Agent Reed on "Criminal Minds" was shown cocking his revolver before sweeping an apartment for possible perps.I was always taught DAO on revolver anytime you were dealing with possible encounter and any time you were going to be moving the gun around (painting). I'd like to hear from real Detectives and Agents if possible. Uniforms if they actually know the department procedures for "plain clothes".

"so can you put a loaded shotgun in your truck window on a rack since it would not be concealed? " Shotgun visible in window of a pick-up truck in today's society? Ah I see, you are obviously feeling sorry for that poor gang-banger in back who doesn't have a gun and want to make one available to him! I worry about leaving my revolver in the bolted in lockbox in my trunk when I go into a posted area! I know in the Nashville/Knoxville/Memphis areas you would have donated that gun within the first hour of arrival. It probably isn't a whole lot better a practice in most small towns either. Theft is pretty much an acceptable way of life in most of America anymore. I say that after growing up a country boy who had his H&R 12 gauge in a window rack pretty much all of the time. That was then, bad idea now!

I carry Hornady 125 gr JHP/XTP but I do my practicing with Winchester 130 gr FMJ (White Box) from Wally World. I find them accurate and conrollable. I used them in my 686 for my HCP qualification shoot (scored 100/100). Any of the ammo is going to turn your cylinder front black, just clean it off. I use Mothers Mag Wheel Cleaner (available at WW or Autozone) on the front of the cylinder and the marks come right off. Don't use it on frame though, any good cleaner will clean the carbon off the rest of the gun (CLP,Hoppes, etc)with a little brushing with a nylon toothbrush. Ammo is dirty, ergo guns to some degree are always dirty. Live with it, it is the nature of the beast.

I didn't have to worry about it. I spent my 19th birthday in Saigon. Could drink all I wanted and they gave me my own gun. I killed my first human being two weeks later. Check with your First Sergeant, maybe he can get you a similar deal. There was a small catch to the deal. We started with 6 teams of 2 (12 Marines) but only two of us came home. They didn't even find the other guys bodies. Enjoy your life, 21 will come around soon enough!

I have both (640 and 642) I carry 642 when I pocket carry and the 640 when I belt carry (with an outer garment to cover gun and holster.) I fire Hornady 125 gr XTP/JHP standard pressure in both. I like both guns, but if I could have only one it would be the 642. It is more flexible in carry modes and more practical for all day carry. 640 is very heavy for pocket carry. The only other gun I pocket carry is a Taurus 85 ULBH which is only 2 oz heavier than the 642.

Maverick 88 6-shot is Hofman Castle "Alpha System". I have it in a Home Backup Protection bed rack on my side of bed. I own several Mossbergs and I can't find a bit of difference in quality between "Maverick" and "Mossy" A lot of good gun for a little money!

My primary EDCs: 642,640 and Taurus 85ULBH. Love all 3 of them. 642 is primary Pocket Carry, 640 is OWB carry and Taurus 85ULBH is "Road Gun" when I go out of state.

I have a BERSA Thunder .380 and love the feel and concept. I have found however, that it is both lube and ammo finicky. Different lubes don't seem to work and so far most of the ammo I put through it ends up with at least one FTF every range trip. Pretty gun, right size, but not terribly reliable in my experience. I have put over 500 rounds through it and still have problems with it feeding ball ammo. Hollowpoint has been a nightmare. Gun has been back and forth for work and still has serious reliability problems. It may very well be that I have a lemon, but my Bersa is a "Safe Queen" and a J-Frame Smith or Taurus 85 rides with me everyday.

I have the 2" version and I shoot it weekly at my EDC range time. (My EDCs are S&W J Frames also, so 317 is a "trainer" for drills) I love mine and probably average 100+ shots through it a week.My trigger was great right out of the box. I have to qualify that remark with the fact that I am a "wheelie" and I shoot DAO all of the time. My one and only carry auto is a Glock G23 with a NY1 trigger (8#+). Short version is that I am accustomed to DAO trigger pull. People who like their ,3# auto triggers are likely to find fault with the 317 trigger, but as a revolver shooter I find it pretty good. From experience, I would recommend against any light springs. The 317 is rimfire and you need a healthy whack on the rim for dependable ignition. After the first 200 rounds I found that the 317 trigger smoothed out and was very acceptable. The frame is aluminum so I was very leary of any "trigger jobs" involving removing metal on frame (normal procedure in slicking up a S&W trigger) and waited to see how much range time helped out and it did! Great little gun!

As a retired Marine, 30 years Active Duty, I am not comfortable in depending on any weapon I haven't at least field stripped and inspected. I detail strip and inspect all of my weapons at least once a year. I am aware that a lot of people on this forum are not real familiar with weapons and too much working on the gun may be unwise. I do think that some time with the manuals and/or a good dvd or two would make them more confident with their piece. I field strip, thoroughly clean, inspect and lube my seasonal EDC after every range session (weekly). As every gun I own gets shot at least once a quarter, that means they each get "checked out" every three months at least. I bought a Maverick 88 the other day for house duty and my next purchase within the hour was the AGI Armorer's DVD (Mossberg 500) from Midway,USA on the internet. I also downloaded the Maverick 88 manual from Mossberg within that hour. I just don't feel comfortable putting my finger on the trigger of a firearm I haven't personaly checked out and know how it works. USMC was very thorough in drilling the "care of your piece" into our little green heads! I guess so much so that it became part of my way of life.

A 10 guage H&R Long Tom goose gun when I was 14 years old. It had a metal buttstock plate (no padding). Guy who had it used it as a "boat cannon", (poaching gun, fired into a bunch of ducks or geese on a pond) and he laughed like h*** when I fired it from the shoulder. he fired it by leaning it on the gunwale of the boat and firing it like a cannon! My first experience with a "Weapon of Mass Destruction!"

Look for a Mossberg Maverick 88 Security Model. It already has an 18 1/2" barrel. You pick one up new for under $200.00 ( I paid $185 for mine NIB) or around $150 used. It is just a Mossberg 500 without frills and has a military crossbolt safety on the trigger guard. I keep mine on a bed rack ( rack brackets slip between the mattress and box springs) and bedding covers it up. Not recommended if you have kids (too accessible) but I put shotgun in safe during day and when grandkids are visiting. Only change I made was a fibre optic high vis sight on front. It is relatively light and easy to swing inside house, perfect house gun! I have a mattress holster for my EDC (S&W 64x) in case I don't have time to grab and swing shotgun.

Fox News - Not so fair and balanced
wjh2657 replied to Tim Nunan's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
As Fox News is the GOP bought and paid for media arm, I find it hard to believe they are going soft on Obama. -
I think we may be in a panic over nothing. OBama will push for urban gun control, but I think current (and future) Supreme Court has already tempered the issue of handgun ownership with the Heller decision. Too many manufacturers and merchants will fight the raising of prices on ammo to make it very popular. While everybody is running around worried that "all" Democrats are anti-gun, be aware that most Southern Democrats are very Pro-gun. Carry is a state issue, supported by many Supreme Court decisions, and I really believe it will stay a state issue. NYC types may need to worry, but I don't really believe it is going to be an issue in Tennessee. I can see Shelby County/Memphis getting huffy about HCPs but I don't see much support for restrictive HCP legislation in small town and rural TN and the Tennessee law prohibits municipalities from over riding the state law. The McCain group BTW was also selling the anti-gun issue with minority groups when they weren't on camera. It is primarily a political ploy to get the minority and momma vote. I agree with some others on this forum that this is going to be a bickering government with little cooperation betwee USSC, Congress and Executive branch. Guns area is a political hot potato and I don't think these guys have the where-with-all to take on public dissent. Ther will be some things pass that we don't like, but I am not burying my guns yet! p.s. Pray nothing happens to President involving the use of a firearm (re: Two of our "good old boys last week") as this would cook our goose nationally for gun ownership (shades of Brady!) We have got to keep OBama alive if we want to keep our guns. Remember Republicans are not as much our "buddies" as they would like you to believe either.

Another good reason to carry a S&W J Frame or Taurus 85 with transfer bar!

Would you wear a shirt that says this?

Looks like the sort of thing an ex-wife would bring to your post-shooting civil action! -
OhShoot wants to show he tried to perform surgery and dig out the bullets to save the guy at his civil trial!
