I live just up the road from you in Lafayette (Macon County) I'm rural, but I have NCTC for phone company and they have cheapest broadband DSL in area. They also have a 24/7 tech service available that is outstanding. I have had to resolve several issues (home equipment generated, not NCTC) and they have helped me immensely and quickly) NCTC services Carthage, but I'm not sure whether their DSL lines go there. Check with the phone company when you get there.

I keep 5X8 data cards on all of my guns. I record target data as well as rounds fired. I'm a former USMC Sniper so I am a bit of a fanatic about keeping my weapons realistically Accurate (sighting, right ammo, etc.)None of my guns are "performance specials" but they are all accurate enough for their niche. If I see black when I fire I want to see a hole in it when I bring the weapon down or look through the scope! Especially at range shooting time, it pays to keep records!

Go with the Ruger MkI-MKIII series. I am a S&W guy but my Ruger MKII is my main rimfire handgun. Don't waste your money on any of the tricked out other brands costing much more. Start out with the .22 and build skills first. The Ruger is a real "confidence builder" it will deliver lead on paper just where you want it every time if you do your part. Every real shooter should have at least one Ruger MKI-MKII. I have bought and fired other, more expensive brands. They are gone and the Ruger still goes to the range with me for every session.

I carry a gun for self defense. Long gun is impractical for my life style, so no. Sounds to to me as an attempt to provide free guns for gang bangers. Broken windows in car seems inevitable. Shotgun is for house not car!

See you at drill. I float around HQ in the morning and I am usually at the Academy (Cherico Hall) in the afternoon.

What sort of jobs/ranks are available? All types. We are basically a Military Police/Light Infantry force but without firearms. In event of actual invasion we are support primarily not the armed "spearhead" What sort of qualifications or prerequisites are you looking for? Just prior service, any service. We will train you in your new position. What kinds of missions/duties can one expect? Light Security, Traffic control and Emergency assistance. We provide free security service for the RAM (Rural Area Medical assistance) and for numerous civilian community groups. During a recent Joint Operation we provided security elements for the Tennessee Army National Guard ( most of their assets are in IRAQ.) We also provide extensive Legal, Medical and Chaplain assistance, including to the 101st AB at Fort Campbell. Is there a formula used to calculate your rank/position based on prior Military service and rank? One rank higher than your prior service rank. I retired a MGySgt (E9) from the USMC so I came in as a CSM. After getting my degree at TTU, I was commissioned. Unlike most State Guards, the TNSG does have Warrant Officers. And finally; is there any discussion about moving away from BDUs and goofy patches, and transitioning into something that better matches the current Army/NG uniform? Current AG wishes for us to stay in a different uniform from NG. I think it is partly for the public to recognize the difference between the forces (State vs Federal) but I am not really sure. As long as he wants us to wear the Woodland BDU/TCU, we will. The woodland TCU is the same uniform as the ACU, just in a different color and pattern. As we are not going to be deployed outside of TN, and TN is woodland and not desert, our present uniform is probably more appropriate.

Anybody interested in what training is offered in TNSG check out: www.tnguardacademy.org (Academy) www.walthofman.com ( Training Resource Center, Library) State Guard completely reorganized a year or two ago and it is fully functional right now. The use of the U.S. Army uniform is because we are recognized by the Federal Government through the National Guard Bureau (NGB) and we are part of the State Military Department. The National Guard in Tennessee is directed by the Governor (through the AG) to work with us and we have an good ongoing working relationship. We are considered part of the Statewide Joint Forces Staff. The only patch on the uniform that is bright is the TN Flag. Everything else is subdued. Beret flash is Red vs Blue for NG. The Colonel Hofman mentioned as Commandant, TNSG Academy, on site is me. Anybody on the forum with questions about TNSG feel free to email me at wjh2657@walthofman.com. For the baggy pants crowd. Fort Benning 1961 and Fort Lee 1962. Air Delivery( 1962-63), MACV Marine Advisory Unit (1963-1966), and 1st ANGLICO (attached to 2nd ARVN Rangers 1971)

I have been in TNSG for 18 years. I currently am serving as Commandant of the TNSG Academy (Online School). I'll see you at Foster Avenue as I am on the General Staff. COL Walter Hofman

Go with the Perry suspenders, you will never regret it. They are heavy duty but also easy on and off. You can release them and still have them on, (head calls!)so you can hook up again without taking your outer garment off, perfect for CCWs. The only drawback is you still have to wear a belt, but this okay for us as you are going to have a belt and holster on anyways. I bought direct from the company. http://www.perrysuspenders.com/

a. Suspenders: As I get older I lose my hips and gain a belly! I have to buy trousers a size larger but they slide down with any weight on belt. The Perry suspenders really help keep things together. I wear them covered up by outer garment in winter and I don't wear them in warm wx. 642 in pocket doesn't drag my pants down. b. Weather change. No, I had already switched from 642 to 640 in November, but I just now found the M&P. I guess I was pretty ambiguous in my wording at the beginning of the post.

With cold weather here, I have switched to OWB (under a sweater). I just retired 640 to safe and strapped on a "new" EDC. Saturday I picked up a S&W M&P (pre-10)with a 2" barrel and factory nickel. Gun was only fired once or twice and then carefully put away. I bought it from daughter of original owner. It's riding in a Minimalist holster at 2 o'clock.

I have 3 NEF/H&R singleshot shotguns. Two in .410 and one in 20 gauge. All with youth stocks. The H&R is for utility (read: pest guns) and for teaching youth. The three mentioned are the grandkids' shotguns when they come to visit grandpa. I myself started with an H&R 128 Topper in 20 gauge at 10 years old. That old gun brought home a lot of pheasants and rabbits from Ohio cornfields! It is still in use today! One of the .410s does yeoman duty as my "yard gun" for snakes and skunks. I live in the country but still too close to other houses for any "heavy" artillery. I have a Youth Model .410 Pardner with the synthetic stock that is constantly at hand for "Varmints". H&R even makes "starter" high power rifles and muzzleloaders. A great way to start young people without breaking the bank.

It would be worth the fine to most newspapers just to able to print the news!
-
Right now, a 640 in a Galco Stinger OWB. Starting next week, a ca. 1951 S&W M&P (Pre 10) in a Bianchi Minimalist OWB. On warmer days, a 642 in a Nemesis pocket holster.

One of these days, there's going to be a dead dog out here.

Don't use paint balls on dogs. It can come back later in a civil suit that you "provoked or teased" the dog leading it to attack. It's BS but you don't really want to leave a trail of accelerating conflict here. First time speak to owner (who will probably be as mean as dog!) Second time call the Local Authority (whoever or whatever is responsible for animals) and make sure that you note date, time, name of person you talked to and content of complaint. Make a written complaint if possible (paper trail for CYA.) After that you have to play it by ear, but don't take any undue chances, especially if children are involved. Dogs do hurt and on occasion kill people! I live in a semi-rural area and the dogs here run free. All of the dogs in our area know everybody and belong to everybody, so no problems. I have noticed an occasional aggressive dog appears but they also seem to disappear soon after. (No I don't shoot them, I like dogs. But I also don't go ballistic over the sound of a shotgun or .22 rifle in the night!) My experience has been that friendly neighborhoods seem to have friendly dogs and vice versa for mean neighborhoods. -
Back to original post. There are just too many different badges out there to outlaw anybody carrying a badge. In some school ditricts crossing guards wear badges, and they look more official than the ones worn by the THP! I personally won't wear or carry one because I don't want anybody to think I am an LEO and have to depend on me when I may not legally be able to deliver. I'm a private citizen not an LEO, and at this point in life (retired) I am happy it is that way.

Speaker Kent Williams speaks out on new gun proposals
wjh2657 replied to waynesan's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
As a Libertarian I said long before this election that we are in as much danger from Republicans as we are from Democrats. It's just that the Democrats are more up front about it. The Republicans are just as likely to take our rights away, they just don't admit to doing it. The Democrats do it and brag about it, the Republicans do it and lie about it. Either way elected officials as a group are not our friends. I am not liberal and I was a Republican for 20 + years, but I am not any more trusting of the red than I am of the blue! I look at the voting history and philosophy of the individual, not their party affiliation. -
I have notice numerous recommendations on other forums for newbies to use Federal NyClad in their snubbies. In fact it seems every thread about carry ammo comes up with several NyClad recommendations. First off, yes it is great ammo, until about a decade ago I always carried Federal Nyclad (Blue) in all of my snubbies. The problem is: it isn't available! Federal NyClad is is sold to LEO and LEAs only! Most newbies are civilians with HCPs and they cannot legally buy the ammo. If they would get involved in a shooting the opposite attorney would jump on the chance to show they were carrying illegally acquired ammo, you know hardcore criminal assassin types with illegal ammo. I would love to carry NyClad in my S&Ws , I still think it might be the best snubbie ammo ever made, but I am not about to break the law to buy it. I really think we need to leave it out of the list of possible carry ammos for civilians today, If it ever comes available to general public again I would probably jump on it, but I have since learned to trust Hornady XTP for a standard pressure load ( and there are many more, besides NyClad, standard pressure loads out there.)

Everybodys' guns and shooting concepts will differ, so will the ammo. I carry snubbies and shooting practice is all in close, <25 feet. I prize accuracy and control over ability to expand to silver dollar size or penetrate 36" of gelatin.Just my warm fuzzy zone, yours can be different. I tried most of the different brands and weights. I found that what you are already carrying works best for me. I carry Hornady 125gr JHP/XTP .38 Spl and I practice with 130 gr WWB 130 gr FMJ (same point of impact for me and feels like same recoil.)

People are still eating and programs are in place to ensure that they will continue to eat. When masses of people start starving (not just being hungry for more food) but starving, then we will have riots. The American Market is a voracious animal that needs profit to feed. It will survive and continue to feed by forming a market (with jobs and paychecks, it must have consumers) that can survive and profit. It doesn't matter who is President, the Market is going to survive and the American public's well being is tied to that market, so they will survive too. You cannot equate anything that happens outside the United States to what happens inside the United States. We are not the same as other countries and we never will be!
-
I think they are trying for a market that is already filled with good lightweight revolvers. I have 5 S&Ws and a Taurus 85. If I can get a good buy on one I would snatch up a Ruger SP101 too. They are all good reliable guns and worth having. We "little revolver" people are already well served. This sounds like an Edsel to me.

Another Ridiculous "What Would You Do" Question
wjh2657 replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Back to original post. If you wait to defend yourself can the other victims sue you because you didn't act earlier in their defense? Law says no, you don't have to defend anybody, even yourself! Problem: Civil Court has absolutely nothing to do with law! I sat on civil juries two different cycles (two years). Law is supposed to be a guideline but it just doesn't work out that way. First off, the no liability provision of the Self Defense law doesn't apply here. That is only between you and the guy you shot (or surviving kin) and has nothing to do with the rest of the folks in the room. And there is a quirky clause in Federal law that over-rides the no liability clause and says you can be sued even by the Victim or his kin. Jury decides whether or not you pay and indirectly your guilt for wrongdoing. They are deciding if they think you did something wrong, not something illegal.( Remember OJ: Innocent of Murder (criminal court) and guilty of reckless homicide (Civil court). ) If they feel you should have jumped up and saved those poor folks, then you are going to pay them for your terrible mistake. Of course if you had jumped up and Rambo-ed the BG, they woul probably all have sued you for reckless endangerment for starting a gun fight! Don't look for justice, common sense or right and wrong in a civil trial. If the jury is dressed and looks like you - you probably win. If the jury dresses and looks like the folks suing you- you probably lose. All you can do is stay alive, maybe you were do a change in career and style of living anyways! -
Front pocket carriers - Do you ever think....
wjh2657 replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I carry 640/642 in Nemesis holster all of the time. Neither revolver will fire without trigger back and holster covers trigger. I doubt I will ever draw sitting down so there is no factor in hitting somebody in front of me while I am seated. I am an armorer and I am picky about inspection and maintenance on my revolvers, so I trust safety features to work as advertised. -
I sometimes carry a Taurus 85 ULBH (Ultra Light Bobbed Hammer). It has the best trigger of any of my snubbies. I normally use the gun as my "Out of State Carry". If I run into a LEO in another state who decides to make his own laws up (sorry, but it has already happened to me on a hunting trip!) I won't be losing too much money when I lose the gun. The 85 is a good shooter and I am quite happy with it. I have put over a 1000 .38 Spcls through it and no problems so far.

I'm not going to say autos are evil or that revolvers are super weapons. I own both and in my lifetime I have carried both, including into combat. The problem right now is that the ideal beginner's revolver is no longer being made in sufficientlty large quantities. . I am talking of course about the K-Frame with 3 or 4 inch barrel. You can buy a new Model 10 in 4" or you can buy the BMW! The weapon is way overpriced for a utility gun. Smith says it is a classic so they charge an arm and a leg for it. The alternative today is a Ruger SP101 in longer barrel or a S&W 36 or 640 in Stainless with a 3" barrel. They will do but neither is the match for the Model 10/64 in 3". Smith needs to bring back the 64 in 3" and in a "plain Jane" version that is priced lower. That would be the revolver to start with. In a semi-auto I would say a service length 9MM. In most cases the mid sized autos (G19/G23 size) have an even heavier spring and can be harder to rack. Most of the .45s have too big of grips for a gal's hand. The 1911 has an acceptable grip but is not a good gun to start with. I say that based on the fact that I carried one on duty for 30 years. It is a well trained pistolero's gun, (and still probably the best out there for a pro!) but not a novice's gun.
