Go with the .38 Spcl. You can buy ammo for it or reload. .22 LR is next to impossible to buy and is no longer a cheap cartridge. You could shoot reloads in the .38 for less than you will pay for .22Lr, if you can even find it.

And I hear .22 LR will be publicly available again by 2025!  I think I would lose a lot of practice time in the meantime. Thanks to the hoarders and gun show gougers, the  .22LR is pretty much a caliber of the past. Airguns are already replacing them in our area.

Yeah, I have a passing relationship with S&W snubbies. I use a systems approach to the platform. See below. I practice draw with the "Blue Gun" and live daily practice with the .22 (637). Weekly range practice with the 642 and 640. Practice with the 637 will soon cease due to the .22 becoming an obsolete cartridge due to public availability and/or exorbitant cost.

  According to Florida Law, he was exercising his Second Amendment right to shoot black kids. This is similar to the Texas Stand Your Ground law which states that you have a second amendment right to shoot Mexican kids.   All sarcasm aside, the rampant loopholes in both of these states' laws (so loved by the NRA and forum posters) could end up with the legislatures rescinding all of the Stand Your Ground laws. Our state has a reasonable and appropriate law, but we could end up losing it with the vigilantes running loose in Florida and Texas.   BTW, as loose as the Florida Law is, this guy could end up walking free if he gets a good lawyer.

Go to the gun shows. Plenty of .22 LR and more costly than 7.62 or .5.56 ammo. People do not buy .22s because of Sandy Hook, they buy ARs and GLOCKs!

  You need to do some serious reading in political science. This type of endeavor is "Free Market" and is not a Democratic Party item. This is a center post of the Republican Party platform. I happen to be a free Market Conservative myself. The problem here that it is dysfunctional. The hoarders should be buying from wholesalers and then competing price-wise with WALMART as a fellow retailer. Then we buyers get to pick which one we want to buy from. The way they are doing it defeats the purpose of the Free Market, to allow the buyer to determine the price. This type of operation is the main reason we have never been able to make the "Free Market" work in this country. The seller always determines the price and the buyer is shafted.

The hoarding and gouging of .22LR ammo is the worst. This is the training ammo for our children. I teach my grandchildren when they come to the country, but I have had to taper off because of the ammunition shortage. I refuse to pay the outlandish prices they are charging at gun shows.

I have two Marlin 60's and numerous other marks. If I am headed into the woods, one of the Marlin 60's is in my hands. For reliability and feel, I just don't believe it can be beat. This is the consummate plinker/squirrel rifle IMHO.

The events mentioned bring home a sad fact: the Republican Party is self-destructing. I was a Republican right up until Newt Gingich got in bed with Bill Clinton. Since then I have had nothing to do with either party. The Democrats are too populist and Socialist for me ( I am a Free Market person). The Republicans are no longer GOP but Neoconservative. They are too plutocratic to be Free Market.   We are in the same mess Germany was in the 1920’s: you have a choice between Socialism and Fascism. Neither party has any desire to govern this country, they just want the power to rape the middle class. Both parties have sold out to the super-wealthy. The Democrats have too many faults to even start listing here. I have no intention of becoming a Democrat nor defending them.     The Republicans however, have acquired some glaring faults: They claim to be moral and Christian, yet they marry three and four times. They cheat publicly on their wives. They have been caught lying and cheating to win elections. Their children are Lesbians and Homosexuals. They claim to be Free Market Capitalists, yet they operate through crony capitalism (dangerously close to Fascism!) thereby discouraging true capitalism. They scream about liberal bias in media, yet they also run blatantly obvious propaganda mills, full of lies and half-truths. They are not the lesser of two evils, they are one of the two great evils, neither of which is fit to govern.   Answer? I don’t have one. The two parties have seized the government and have too much power to unseat. We are going to have to live with the obvious, rule by the People is a myth.

I am a retired teacher. I spent a good portion of my career as a "Behavior Teacher" or TIP teacher in a self enclosed classroom. The statements in the Daily Caller are not all true nor are they all false. The information that I take exception to in the original letter (available here: http://www.justice.gov/crt/about/edu/documents/dcl.pdf   ) is in their data based on IDEA (Special Ed) students. That data is very slanted as behavioral problems are designated Special Education and are handled in a Special Ed (IDEA) environment) It is  like saying more convicted convicts are likely to be in prison compared to people not sent to prison! That is a given! Read the letter (all of it) and you will see that it not really a call for "race quotas" for punishment. It does  however totally disregard cultural differences that are more a stimulus to bad behavior than race itself. The letter does not consider all of the contributing factors that have lead to the school discipline problem. If it has a fault it is that the people drafting the letter have been terribly naïve and simplistic.

Don’t lump Defense Spending all in one package. A huge chunk of “Defense Spending” is “Corporate Welfare”, mainly contracts for airplanes the military doesn’t want, tanks that nobody wants and wars that should never be fought.  Lobbyists decide what will be procured and the military has little to do with it. The Defense Department right now is really the “Welfare Department for” for Corporations. They need to let the military sit down together and decide what they really need to defend our country. Then we can work out a Defense budget I downloaded Paul Ryan’s budget from when he was running for VP. It is actually very simple: We will take more money from the middle class and give it to our rich campaign contributors. The Democrat’s budget was also very simple: We will take all of the Middle Class money and give it out in welfare and presents for our rich supporters.   FOX News and MSNBC both lied through their teeth as to what the budget was going to do. Nether budget would have lowered the debt, they were simply going to move money from programs favoring rich to favoring the poor or vice versa.   Don’t ever believe that either party is going to do anything for the working and middle class. The two party system has failed to govern and we need more, newer philosophies and parties. For right now the answer is simple: DON’T SEND ANYBODY BACK!

I didn't say I thought there should be a law against selling out of the trunks. . I have bought a few guns "out of the trunk" myself, mostly shotguns. My point was simply that this the type of selling that they are after, not the gun show sales.

Loophole isn't with dealers. It is with the good old boys that bring their guns and sell out of their trunk. Legitimate dealers never were the problem. All of the gun shows I have been to have been legit and following the rules inside the building. It is what happens in the parking lot that upsets the anti-gun crowd.

Everybody has missed the key element in the photograph. As a retired (20 years service)  member of the Tennessee State Guard (after 30 years active duty in the USMC) I picked up on the name tag. Army (Regular and National Guard) wear a black name tag. The red name tag is a State Defense Force name tag. He is a member of the New York Guard, a State Defense Force. He is not a serving federal officer. As State Defense Force Officer, he has no authority or affiliation at federal level. He obviously has some previous Federal service, but right now he is not a part of the U.S. Army or National Guard.  I retired and still hold a commission as a Colonel (0-5) in the TNSG, but it has  no authority outside the State of Tennessee.
