Lots and lots!

Everybody has their own opinion (free country, I think.) I personaly don't subscribe to the theory that after firing hundreds (maybe thousands) of rounds on range that the habits picked up there are just going to disappear because adrenalin is pumping. if that were so, then it wouldn't make much sense to waste range time and ammo money. Adrenalin is going to make me do everything right! I feel that if I am slow to recover on range because of recoil, my firing drill is going to remain same when I draw and fire for real. My motor reactions aren't going to go away just because I am excited. If they do, I am wasting time practicing. I have experienced this when switching from firing .38s in 642 to .22 LRs in 317 during same range session. My time on 317 is the same as with 642 (I am anticipating need for recoil recovery.) If you are not practicing enough to pick up motor reaction sets, you very likely are not practicing enough!

Mine was the stainless model, no black paint, but it did have some rough edges. Shoots real good now though. I use the 1022 for fun, I hunt with one of my two Marlin 60s. In the woods I like the tubular magazine.

I apologize for any misunderstanding. My point was addressed to those who stated that the long gun, in particular, Assault Rifles were their primary self defense arm and handgun was just to get to the long gun. The law was meant to give us the right to carry a handgun to defend ourselves. I got side-tracked and lost point of my own post! The second part of your post is actually the question I was trying to ask. I do put my handgun in a car safe when I go into places I can't carry gun and I have been told repeatedly in posts that this is a dumb thing to do. If it isn't safe to leave a handgun in a Car Safe in the trunk, why is it suddenly such a good idea to leave a long gun in the same trunk?

I think you may have a clue with the term "brand new". Every weapon I ever owned , and some of them were very, very expensive, have needed a break-in period. The only guns that worked really good out of the box were my H&R top breaks and all of my bolt action rifles. Even my revered S&W revolvers were finicky at first. A lot of the Ruger (and all .22 semi-autos) are not carefully hand finished and have rough edges and burrs. Shooting them smoothes all of that out. If your problem persists you need to send that gun back to Ruger. I really felt that the problems I had with High Cap mags were due to design ,not rough edges, and that more shooting wasn't going to help much. Just my impression.

Sorry CrimsonAudio, Had a knee-jerk reaction there. My response about the "Walmart Parking lot" wasn't based on what I know is the good reasoning ability of the majority of Permit Holders. And I don't look for any sudden "war zones" to crop up. But I do think that we need to think out the place of Long Range (rifles) and massive killing power weapons (shotguns) in self defense in urban and congested areas. I detected a lot of "I'll defend myself no matter how many sheeple get hurt" in the posts in question. You have the right to defend yourself and your family. But you have no right whatsoever to hurt or kill any innocent people. In a civilian self defense situation there can be no collateral damage. If you hit an innocent person, you are no longer a self defense case, you are just a criminal. I have carried an M16 and I have used it in combat. I have also seen many innocents go down in those conflicts. the potential for this to happen is much much greater when a semiauto high powered weapon is involved in particular. My point still is, if you have the time to get the long weapon out of the car, why don't you just get into the car and leave? Again I supported the law, the reply was to a post stating that the individual was looking to his long gun as his primary SD weapon in a public area. Our ( civilian CCWs) primary weapon out in public is our handgun. And that has to be wielded carefully and skillfully. Now at home is different. The Mossy is going to get racked and 12 gauge is king!

Nope, don't want law removed. just don't want to see it misused. I am not real happy about people who want to conduct AR15 firefights in Walmart parking lots with my wife and grandkids going there. Like I stated, I will probably use the law to throw my Mossy 500 in the trunk on my jaunts out into he countryside. It could be a handy law, but it does jhave a dark side to it. As far as my being a Liberal, I am a free market Conservative and have voted Republican in the last several elections. I just don't subscribe to the current thought that you have to be ultra right to like Republican candidates. If not wanting to kill innocent people, better known as sheeple, is a purely "liberal" sentiment, as it seems to be in these forums, than I may have to rethink that Conservative label. I know I will get some nasty reaction to this, it is okay to really slander anybody who thinks different than Conservative, but GOD help the poor soul that intimates that it may not be a good thing to go too far right. I am and always will be a moderate. Too far in either political direction leads to the old Nazis vs Reds environment. To answer the question: I supported the law, but I didn't think at the time that it was meant to change our permits to Open Carry of loaded Assault Rifles into public places. if that is what the law is, then I may very well be in error.

If you can get to your car, unlock your trunk and take a shotgun/rifle from a locked container or rack (the only responsible way to leave a weapon in the car) why not just unlock your door and drive away? The purpose here is to save your life, not start WWIII in Shelby County. Also, the law never intended that we were to replace our handguns with long arms as primary guns for self defense. This was not"let's go out and form our own Army" legislation. We are feeding into the anti-gun faction's meanest propaganda, that we are " A private army out to get the public." Those who see real need to engage in open battles at Walmart with ARs need to go see their Army recruiters and put this drive to good use. I can already see problems starting with this law, one that could cost us in the end.

I find it interesting that some of the same posters who poo-pooed the idea of a trunk handgun safe in the trunk on grounds that somebody was going to steal your car and or break into it and get the gun now feel it is okay to carry a loaded (tube) shotgun in the same trunk of the same car. Since some of you have already stated that you drive Bad-*** SUVs, the shotgun is only going to have glass between it and the BG. You can have it one way or the other but I don't really think you can argue against handgun safes and then pass on shotguns in the trunk or cab (SUV). I open my trunk too much (groceries, Walmart bags, etc) to have anything hanging out in plain sight back there. If you bury the gun under something you negate the idea of having it available for a fight. Besides, I think my lawyer could explain a shotgun in a house break-in situation but I really think he would have to work hard to get a SD decision on a Walmart parking lot shootout with a 12 Gauge! I live in the country and I probably would throw my Mossberg in the back seat if I was going into the woodsy area. So the law does have merit, but I just don't see it for an urban area. You get into with the "boyz in the hood' with shotguns and it's going down as a gang banger. Their gang and yours!

I am finicky about reliability , even in rimfires. I didn't really want to give a bad rap to any of the High Cap mags. They are fine for fun shooting where you don't rely on every shot working (an impossibility with rimfire ammo anyway!) but I do trust the Ruger Mags more than aftermarket for a gun I may need to dispatch a rabid skunk or a snake.
-
The Butler Creeks were fine until I got about 1500 rounds through them, then they started having problems too. Could just be my 1022, as I have heard that some guns take to them and some don't. You should never take another person's experience with gun accessories as gospel as to how they will work in yours. Different parts + different guns may equal totally different results! I would like to have a high cap in my Tacticool 1022, so I may try the TI aluminum when they become available. They are adjustable and I may be able to make them work on this gun. I'm just saying I haven't had much luck with 1022 High Caps in my gun. However, the same gun with factory mags is a super performer, so, for this particular gun, I'll stick with stock mags for now.
-
The TI Aluminums were on a 3-6 month backorder when I did my trials. So, no I didn't try them. They weren't, and from what I can find on the web, still are not, available. If and when they ever become available, I may try one of them. Question is academic now, with decent .22 lR ammo almost non-existant.

I think you are going to find that .357 is not an ideal snubby cartridge. I have a 686 2 1/2" and a Model 19 2 1/2" as well as a 60 and a 640. Although I can handle the round better in the K and L frames, it still is snappy and very, very noisy! And I am not all that sure I am getting all that much more in oomph out of the short barrel. I really feel that .38 Spl is the snubbie caliber. If I really needed the power 0f the .357 I'd go for a 4" barreled gun, probably the 686 (19s are getting real hard to find) or a Ruger GP 100.

I was just musing through my arsenal the other day and got to thinking. Which guns had the most influence on my life? Which guns do I remember with the fondest memories and shoot the most today? I am not going to cover handguns as many people never really get into handguns (I EDC but a lot of my neighbors don't even own a handgun.) Most influence and fondest memories: Marlin 15 and H&R Topper (Model 128) Shoot the most today: Marlin 60 and Mossberg 500. Consider most essential (everybody should have one!): Marlin 60 and Mossberg 500. ( some of you will substitute Ruger 10/22 and Remington 870 here, works the same)

USMC 1961-1991, Viet Nam 63-66, 68-69, 71-72 ( I was in one of the last Marine Combat Units to leave (1st Anglico), I was with the MAU that took them off the rooftops IN 1975. made Grenada,Lebanon (2X) and Desert Shield (first phase of Desert Storm.) Marines pretty much got multiple tours of Nam, just like now in IRAQ and Afghanistan. Marine Corps is small, stick around and you see lots of action as an individual. I agree with you that it is the fringe radicals that get most of the attention, but I differ that in the end they make all of the policy. Just as the Libertarians have their pro-dope and pro-pot groups, the Democrats their Welfare State groups and the Republican Party have their "rich people should get every thing" groups and their racist and storm trooper groups. Overall though both parties have moderates who temper the outcomes. The Democratic Party has a strong Pro-gun faction and a strong balanced budget faction as does the Republican Party. Somehow, in the end the moderates usually prevail. We tend to get so tied up in our own personal interests and legislature addressing our issues that the overall performance goes unnoticed. Age does make a difference, the problem is: you have to get older to understand why.

Libertarian (with a big L) is an American party that seeks a constitutional based government with appropriate powers going to the states, as our forefathers intended. I find it interesting that a 21 year old can call a 30 year retired Marine, 6 years in Viet Nam and wounded, unAmerican because he doesn't share his political views. BTW, I give a lot of my money to charity, and always have.

I am missing something here. In the past we were not allowed to carry in these places period! Were there long lines of hood waiting to mug us then? No, in fact incidence of violent muggings are lower in these places than they are in Walmart parking lots, where we can carry (the subject population is more diverse!) There are some very valid arguments as to why we should be able to carry but this one smacks a little too much of the "Chicken Little" syndrome. I don't believe crime will go up because we can't carry, but it definitely could go down because we carry. Maybe a more sound debating point.

Don't have to, the far right posters have done it for me. Read previous posts by the "Liberal Bashers". You can't rail against "Communist" social programs day after day and then act offended when your hand is called. BTW you answered in the political defensive mode, not the RKBA mode. Point made. My major political concern is for individual rights and then economic survival of small businesses and small communities. That makes me a moderate not a liberal. Neither party represents the moderates concerns. My point wasn't to get into an argument but to shut this thread down and get back to the major issue of this forum and that is 2d Amendment rights for all good citizens, regardless of which party is in power.

"To me, measures such as these would greatly improve ourselves publicly and personally. I would be happy to feed the homeless or help some disabled children, take a batered woman out to the range one day." Cowboy20th: The people you just mentioned are "sub Human trash and parasites" to the people you are arguing with. You are proving their personal argument. These are the people that the "Liberals" cater to. If you haven't already noticed, all the heat in these forums is not related to the RTKBA but to a political party affiliation. They lost the election and they are using the 2d A as their personal sounding board as to why they should still be in power. The argument is party to party and not to the issue. Notice the use of the term "liberals" instead of "anti-gun people" I am not a Liberal. I am a Libertarian and I am after all of the Anti-gun politicians and groups (Republican, Democrat, and whatever.) And yes there are some strong Republican anti-gun reps, they are just very subtle about it. In the South many of our strongest advocates (pro-gun) are Democrats! If we want to keep our guns we need to vote for the individuals, regardless of party affiliations, who have set the record of supporting us. If we tie ourselves to just one party, we are just as liable to lose our guns to one as the other. The current administration does bear close scrutiny in this issue but we need to keep an eye on some of the so-called friendly Conservatives too. Let's keep our eye on the fact that it is a Constitutional issue not a Party issue.

Left a little 1 dog/1 horse town (population 480) 49 years ago. Joined Marine Corps, spent 30 years and retired. After USMC, went to college on GI Bill all the way to Masters Degree. Taught school for 16 years and retired from that. Kids I grew up with? Still in that same town, living in dad's house and now supporting their kids! For most of us small town and working class guys, the military is the best single move we can make. From what you say about liking Machine Shop, I'd say take look into the MCBs (SeaBees) or ship ratings (Machinist Mate) in the Navy. Really fine schools and lots of hands on experience. You don't have to stay forever, but do stay long enough to get a lot of good training.

I can't believe somebody is asking this question. You are going to work for a company, you are bound by their rules. If you feel the rules are illegal or unfair, don't work for the company! There is no consitutional right for any of us to work for any company! If emphasizing your 2dA rights is that important to you, I think you better acquire independent wealth real quick or learn to go without eating. My rights are important to me, but feeding my family and keeping my job ranked up there in first place! I spent 30 years on active duty in the Marine Corps and every base I was ever on was a "gun free" zone, unless you were on duty and in the work area. I then spent 18 years teaching High School and you know the rules there. I'm retired now, but I still follow "group" rules wherever I am.

I'm confused. You said it was a squirrel gun and then said you wanted it accurate out to 100 yards. I have never had a 100 yard shot at a "tree" squirrel. are you meaning "ground" squirrels? The reason I brought this up is that I have both target and hunting "field" .22 LRs. The scopes I use for target work ( Mostly Leupolds) are too heavy and complicated for hunting. All of my field guns have either Nikon ProStaff 4X32 RF or Bushnell 4X Rimfire scopes on them. You are not going to be fiddling with drums and bullet drop graphs if you are hunting anything in the woods. You are barely going to have time to get the rifle to your shoulder and get off a shot. This is the area for a decent rugged 4X32 RF scope sighted in for PBR. You are also going to need fairly heavy reticles to pick up in dim light. Through now 5 decades of woods hunting, I have learned to go simple and rugged with my gear. My deer rifle, a 30-06, has 3-10X Leupold scope but is sighted in for PBR at 4X. I never move anything in the woods. The middle of the line Nikons, Weavers and Bushnells are ideally suited for a hunting rimfire, in the woods at least. Below is My Tree Rat battery for hunting with grandsons: Grandpa's gun: Bought NIB Marlin 60 with a Nikon ProStaff 4X32RF scope. Grandsons' gun: Much older Marlin 60W (Youth stock) perspective fools you, stock is shorter on bottom rifle! Rifle has Bushnell 4X RF scope. Both sighted for PBR.

I have fired a friend's Mini-14 and Mini-30 , one with ATI and one with Tapco. I liked the Tapco better, but that is probably because I have a Tapco on my 10/22 and I am used to it.

I have tried all 25+ mags I could find and finally gave up. I even tried the all-metal ones, but they still jammed. I now have 5 "normal" 10 shot Ruger factory rotary magazines. Not a single jam from any of them. I really half believe that the .22 LR is just too small and light to function well in a high capacity mag. Of course we always have posters who have 100,000+ rounds through their $10.98 specials without a hiccup. I just have never been that lucky. My personal experience has been that The gun was designed around the 10 shot rotary mag and that is what it does the best job with. Unless you are playing SWAT or G.I. wannabe, it really doesn't make much difference. I shoot to hit something, not make a noise and ten shots will kill anything I'm shooting at!
