ChuckTaylor With you guy! I said I was a Republican (if you didn't catch it). I have been a Card Carrying Libertarian for over 20 years now. I am a free market Conservative (believe in free enterprise and as little government meddling as possible.) but I am still pretty strong on family values and small town government. During my 30 years active duty in the USMC I did a lot of partying too. The advantage there was it was mostly with other Marines, most of whom were in tune politically. After I retired I found it hard to "socialize" with civilian acquaintances because of the more worldly views they espoused. When I entered public school teaching, I expected to find teachers to be mostly Liberal. In fact, most high school teachers are very Conservative and very protective of small business (most of their husbands are small businessmen!) They also tend to be very religious family people. After living in cities most of my life, I found that I had to move to a small town/rural environment to find the type of friends I was really comfortable with. Don't worry about the age reference, it is the standard knee jerk reaction from us old farts!

Hey I'm a guy who listens to both sides of any issue. This whole "Guns and Bars" thing has gotten me thinking in a very responsible citizen sort of way. The main argument of the Bar owners (they choose to call their establishments bars instead of restaurants) is that if I have a gun on my person, I'm probably going to get loaded and shoot somebody. Let's say, just for the sake of the argument, that I accept this as a plausible argument. If this is the case then we have left a huge public safety loophole in this whole thing. More people are killed by drunk drivers than drunk shooters! We need a law that prohibits the carrying of car keys into a bar/restaurant. Using the same argument that a person can't control themselves and is going to imbibe, then they shouldn't be allowed in a bar if they are carrying car keys. If they have keys, they can operate their car, a proven weapon of public murder! Bars won't do this however, because they make their money stoking up potential drunk drivers every night! And there are a whole lot more drunk drivers, by 11:30 p.m., out there than there are gun carriers. This is their mainstream customer, and remember, by definition, a potential drunk driver is anybody having more than one drink in an hour. Bar owners lose the moral argument.

They did, by buying the property. CHUCKTAYLOR. I was a Conservative and a Republican about 20 years before you were born. Sounds like you believe anybody who isn't ultra-right wing is a sheep. The majority of grass root Conservatives are not all that far to the Right and if the party doesn't start sounding a little more sane and sensible we'll have a Democrat in the White House for the next decade (which I most definitely don't want!). There fact is that the majority of people who like to party and mix in these places are more slanted toward the Liberal side (I didn't say all of them now.) The ownership is definitely more anti-gun than pro-gun regardless of their political bent. They own the property and you will dance to their tune, accept it, it is the law.

Have a paradox here. 180 degrees out her in Good Ole Boy country. The Mom and Pops aren't posting. Actually I am going by the Nashville Area postings on the chains. It's their managers that are getting face time on TV screaming about guns and bars. The only chains we have up here on the ridge is MacDonalds and Hardees!

Saw a short on this subject on WSMV-TV this evening. Several times signs were shown supposedly prohibiting carry. Not one of the signs complied with the TCA39-17-1359. My physician deals with some patients who are not the most stable in the world. After agonizing over it (he is not anti-gun) he decided to ban weapons in his building. To be perfectly legal, he came to me (He knows that I CCW with a TN HCP) and asked the right procedure to do this. I printed a copy of TCA39-17-1359 for him and then generated two proper signs on my computer, printed them and laminated all of them. His office will now be properly posted, as is his right under the current law. How hard is this? Every one of these "restaurant" owners could do the same in less than 5 minutes and they would be covered. There is no need for any further court actions and no great amount of expense is involved. The orignal legislation took care of both camps. If the place wants my business and is willing to let me carry, they may do so. If the place doesn't want my business and chooses to ban CCW, they may do so. WHAZZZUP?

What is the big storm over? The places you are talking about are big money chains and cater to the exact kind of people everybody here says they don't want to associate with, LIBERALS, SHEEPLE! There are plenty of clean smaller privately owned resturaunts full of Conservative, Christian folks and they serve darn good food. After I retired and had to start watching the money more, my wife and I discovered the privately owned restaurants and "meat and threes" in our area. We haven't cut back on our eating out, we eat healthier( More cooked veggies and good solid food.) We go down to Westmoreland and eat at Cathy's Country Cupboard and out to Grecian's Steak House in Lafayette at least three times a week. We sit and talk with the Sheriff's Deputies, the minister, my buddies from the COOP (Tobacco farmers), and a bunch of other decent working class folks while we eat. There are no signs and my 642 is in its Nemesis in my right front pocket all the time. You want to live the Liberal Yuppy life style but do it claiming Conservative rules and values. Doesn't work that way. You socialize with the Yuppies, you live by their rules. Look around and find some decent family restaurants. If you have to party every time you go out or have to always have alcohol with your food you better check on your Conservative status, it doesn't match with our values. (Yes, I am a Conservative!) Conservative doesn't just mean you think you should be allowed to have a gun, there are other things involved. If you want to party and enter into that Liberal and yuppie area, GOD isn't going to strike you dead, but it is their turf and you have to follow their rules.

Has anybody installed the TI magazine release extension on a Ruger 10/22 in a TAPCO T6 stock? From the pictures it looks like it may not clear the pistol grip. I need to know before buying one and installing it.

OWB carry has a definite comfort advantage over IWB
wjh2657 replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Although I carry 642 in pocket in warm weather, I carry OWB during winter. Yes, sweater does hide weapon. I like bulky sweaters and cordurois in winter so I carry stainless (640) in OWB. -
Yup. That was why I was trying to get somebody from outside of the "company." I wonder sometimes about how some of the posters on these forums treat their guns. There are so many "POS" brands out there that I have owned and proved to be reliable weapons. Then there are the "Wonder Guns" that never jam and never FTF that have proven to me to be real "POS!" I have never had a Remington, Mossberg or NEF/H&R shotgun break on me or fail to function. I own several of each brand and probably always will. Of course, I clean and inspect my shotguns on a regular basis too.
-
Deep in my heart I know you are right and I will continue to do as I have (snap and load). I don't think I am going to get a rise from a tech type anyways. Nice chat.
-
Because I have already emailed Mossberg and Remington and both state that it is a bad practice to leave spring compressed or dry fire gun, which flies in the face of all the answers here. However, I myself have practiced the snap the trigger on an empty chamber and load the tube , without any dire results. I suspect their answer is the standard "error on the side of legal safety." There are gunsmiths that are on these forums and I thought it easier than driving to Virginia or somewhere else to find a face to face gunsmith. It seems the only gunsmiths we have in my area are Glock armorers. Everybody else just mails their guns to the factory.
-
None requested nor needed. I see we are both members of the Over the Hill Gang, so you know how hard it is to get something off your mind until you get a good answer. I have always dry fired on the empty chamber and loaded the tube, but now "new thought" is that this the wrong thing to do. I would just like to know if there is anybody out there who has actually worked on a problem caused by either of the stated practices. I was an armorer in the USMC and I never saw a problem with compressed springs in any weapon nor dry firing either but weapons change, or at least metallurgy does.
-
How many that answered were gunsmiths? I have been carrying and shooting Mossbergs for 54 years, and I haven't broken a firing pin yet either. That wasn't the point. I can find the release, the question (to a person who actually is schooled and certified to repair the weapon) is: does it do actual harm to dry fire the weapon on an empty chamber and/or is it harmful to leave the spring compressed on the firing pin? The fact that somebody has done it again and again does not mean it is always right. Has a gunsmith or armorer out there actually had experience with either of these factors? I am looking for a professional/technical answer. As I have seen this topic on several forums, I would like somebody who really knows to give a definitive answer and lay the point to rest.

The .22 LR Rifle is the gun, everything else is just extra!

I store my HD shotgun (Maverick 88 ) in "cruiser mode". Lately I have been reading that this a bad habit as I have to fire on an empty chamber to set up gun (chamber empty/5 in tube, safety off) The recommendation is to use a snap cap. However, the plastic ones are unreliable in feed and leave plastic residue in action when ejected. Aluminum doesn't do much better. The brass ones cost more for one than a box of ammo! My question is , has anybody done the "cruiser mode" using a primed hull for the first round (in chamber). I have a safe area to fire the weapon into ground with primer. Then load 5 loaded into tube. Primed hulls feed and eject normally and can be re-primed for many uses. They are also a whole lot cheaper. Gun would only be unloaded and reset once every couple of weeks for inspection and light cleaning. I can buy hulls in different color scheme than my shells.

Sen. Boxer to Brigadier General: 'Could you say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?'
wjh2657 replied to a topic in General Chat
You got it. The General would address her as Senator at beginning of conversation or if re-opening a conversation. Thereafter Ma'am or Sir is appropriate. I always referred to all Officers ,male and female, as Sir. This is also appropriate. BTW in the Marine Corps, the only persons called Sergeant are SGT E-5s. Everybody else is referred to by their full rank. I always accepted "Top" or "Super Guns" as respectful. Call a Gunnery Sergeant anything but "Gunny" and you will get this lecture in detail, even if you are a Brigadier General! The Corps is very sensitive to the fact that rank is important to Officer and Enlisted and is to be respected for the responsibilities attached. I broke an Army Captain at Fort Bliss of calling me Sergeant by calling him "Mister" all the time. He eventually stopped calling me "Sergeant" and started calling me "Master Gunny." 2001 Lumina, 155,000 miles, I use whatever JiffyLube uses in Extended Mileage Synthetic. Used it in my 97 GMC Safari van to 250,000 miles. Tornado used van as battering ram to take out garage or it would still be going. I change every 4,000 miles, rotate tires same time. You take care of any car and it will last a long time! Afraid to buy another GM car, they are selling new Chevys in Nashville for under $10,000, this does not bode well! Looks like either Ford or an American made rice burner for next car.

I wouldn't buy an 11 year old anything too complicated. You want him to learn safety and how to clean the gun. I still think the best youth shotgun out there is an H&R/NEF single shot in either .410 or 20 gauge. He'll be giving it to his grandchildren, I did mine!
-
My spotter, SGT Rodriquez, carried an M-14 with selector (1963-1966.) We never had to use it (I never took more than one shot!) but it was comforting to know its firepower was there. I carried 4 extra magazines for him.

Beale Street is a classic example of a "3-S" place anyways. This is exactly what you should avoid if you don't want to get into trouble.

TGI Friday's in Memphis on Winchester "no guns allowed"
wjh2657 replied to ki4otd's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Come on guy, don't sugar coat it, tell us what you really think! Your attitude and course of action is exactly the same as mine. I can find other places to eat! Most of these places don't serve chicken fried steak with bulldog gravy anyways. -
Smarter move. I keep digital camera in kitchen cabinet next to door and one in car glovebox. Get good picture of BG in actor at least on the scene. Does more good for your case and harm to him than holding at gunpoint. Phone camera would work just as good. Then I don't care if he runs away, he's had! Of course my gun hand in on my 642 in my pocket while I'm taking picture and I practice taking the picture with my off hand! (This was advice from a rather efficient prosecutor.) Holding at gunpoint may be necessary but can develop into a bag of worms if BG gets antsy.

I have recently started giving my commercial ammo ( .38 Special) a quality check before using it in my guns. I check for overall length, gross weight (in grains) and high primers. I haven't really had any problems to prompt this but since I spend so much time checking my guns (I LTI before each range session and then function check thoroughly after cleaning) that it only made sense to start checking the ammo. As I handloaded for years I know what I am looking for. Mostly I want uniformity within a lot. Now here is the question: How critical should I be in overall weight? I have noticed weight deviations within a lot in even the best quality ammo of .2-.5 Grains. I have also noticed up to 1.0 grains difference between different lots of same cartridge , is this normal (fluctuation in powder types, brass, bullets etc?) Average range is 195gr to 210gr total weight.
