As the owner of more S&W snubbies than I will ever need, I read your post with trepidation. I have owned and fired S&W revolvers for over 50 years and have a lot of faith in them. However, three things will reach up and bite you if you are not careful: Guns should be kept very clean (not just annually and do learn how to take sideplate off) Ammo needs some Quality Assurance on your part (Inspect it!) Keep everything tightened (screws and ejector rod) If you follow the above, you are going to have about as reliable of a handgun as you can get. It can still happen that you somehow get bad ammo. I've never had problems with WWB 130gr but that doesn't mean it can't happen.I use 130gr WWB for practice ammo even now. I avoid Remington,MAGTECH and the Russian stuff like the plague. I carry Hornady. Of course the above rules would work with a Glock ,Ruger or 1911 too! Don't know about other handguns, I don't buy them.

Looks like it should have an orange cap on the end so nobody confuses a toy with a real gun. I don't intend to give up my 642 and 640.

I know Richard personally and have had to watch him go through this battle. There are problems with some of his arguments that will preclude any "yes you are right " decisions as to his arming for the purpose of militia duty. I also am in the State Guard. The State Guard is not a militia and the argument of arming for the militia under the USC doesn't wash. The State Guard has nothing to do with the militia, which would be raised at the county level ad hoc and then only in case of invasion or threat thereof. The TNSG is a standing department of the Tennessee Military Department and is an adjunct to the Army National Guard and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency in any manner that the TAG might direct. It serves many functions but none of them require the TNSG to be armed. As such our CGs, long before this episode, directed that we were not to carry arms. I EDC with a TN HCP, but I disarm when I don my TNSG uniform, as directed by command authority.

640 on the belt in cold weather and 642 in the pocket in warm weather. I have never had a problem in concealing a J-Frame due to a "bulge". The curve of the cylinder looks natural in a pocket or on hip.

Grandkids' guns (at my house): Ruger Bearcat, Henry 1000Y (youth model) and an H&R .410 Pardner (single shot).

Three guns I will always own: a Ruger MKII/III, a Mossberg 500A and a S&W J Frame. All rugged, simple and reliable.

Mounting a holster to the nightstand

Nightstand is too far away. Resting place for EDC awhen i go to bed. -
From many, many posts by the 1911 crowd on this forum I was lead to believe that the Kaboom was caused solely by the faulty design of the Glock barrel and chamber assembly. I was also given the impression that the 1911 was completely incapapable of a kaboom because of it's design. Only Glocks go Kaboom. I know this because it has been iterated so many times on the forums by so many experts. So is this post for real or just a misunderstanding of the circumstances? Is it really possible that a 1911 can go kaboom?

Cruiser mode. chamber empty and safety off. I am a former LEO and it is second nature for me to rack the slide on the shotgun in a "go" situation. Followed same drill in USMC. Shotty is on a bed rack and could be inadvertently touched when bed is made, so it is just one more safety factor. I've never seen a "quickdraw" showdown gun fight with shotguns and don't intend to get into one, so I feel I'll have time to rack the slide. On the other hand I wear a revolver all day, including at home so that I don't have to do anything but point and shoot. Tennessee even allows me to carry the shotgun in car as long as it is in the cruiser mode. So one drill at all times for the Mossberg 500.

When everybody starts talking "little" guns the 637 seems to be overlooked. I have a 637 and a 60 and love both. The 637 is easily concealable and tremendously reliable carry gun. It replaces my 642 for pocket carry in those times that I need a really "invisible" gun. I have tried BERSA CCs, Keltecs and the LCP and to me they all recoil worse than my 637 with standard pressure ammo.

Problem isn't release, it is her grip, which is probably dependent on what grips are on the gun. I have 5 different J Frames and my thumb is nowhere near the release when firing. Try different grips. her thumb should be wrapping down, well clear of the release. See two handed grip below, again thumb should be well clear of release ( Jerry Miculek in this picture has big hands. I have smaller hands and thumb is much further away from release.).

With cold weather in I switch from 642 in Nemesis in pocket to 640 in a Bianchi #105 slide on the belt .The Bianchi tucks gun very close to the body and sweater or hoody makes it dissappear. I'm 66 and I get cold easy so the extra clothing is normal. The main reason for heavier gun is I also switch to hotter ammo during the cold months. Bad guys get colder and dress warmer too!

Trousdale County, TN– shooting ordinance:
wjh2657 replied to Tempest455's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Macon County, just north of you is real gun friendly. -
As you can see below, a 637 is part of my "summer lite" setup. I pocket carry and evrything is light emough for chino or slacks pockets. As you are electing a smaller, light gun, I don't recommend regressing and loading up "howitzer" ammo. I carry Hornady 125 gr XTP/JHP standard pressure or Federal NYCLADs in mine. If you feel undergunned on standard pressure then drop the snubbie and carry a 640 on your belt and dress to cover it. When I feel the need that is my rig or my Glock 23. I don't really feel undergunned with the 637 and find it to be an excellent shooter at the <25 feet SD range. I practice daily with a 317 in .22LR and once a week at indoor range with the 637 and WW 130 gr FMJ from Walmart. Buy Snap Caps and dryfire the gun zillions of times to smooth out trigger. It doesn't need an expensive trigger job. I think that you will find that a lot of the folks on these forums who say you might as well not carry as to carry Standard .38 Special ammo also say in another section that they usually slip a Keltec .32 ACP in their pocket for "going to the store." I myself feel better armed with a .38 Spcl than a .32 ACP.

As the Grandfather of two grandchildren with inherited disabilities (BiPolar and Siezure Disorder) I am all for the research. As a retired Special Education (Special Needs) teacher I am even more for it. The vast majority of the problems haunting disabled children are genetic. Most of these problems need recessive genes from both sides of the family to happen. Problem is that most of no longer know enough family history to be able to make intelligent decisions about acquiring mates with "genetic time bombs" in them. A decent Genome test would prevent many of these heartbreaks. It would also prevent us from attacking relatives who come up with the smart a** remarks after birth about how "Great Aunt Sally had that too!" Some very expensive and long term research on my part did indeed confirm that my family did have a history of the genetic disorders that condemned my grandchildren, as did both of my daughter-in-laws' families. We unfortuately do not get to make the most important decision in our entire life: who are parents will be. But, maybe the genome project could help some parents make the right decisions. The answer is not in stopping the genome project but in making sure that our idiot "masters" (politicians) don't pass stupid laws misusing the information.

I am an anal retentive old Marine Armorer (additional duty) and I QA (Quality Assurance) my ammo. I weigh it, measure it and check for primer seating on every round before I fire it or carry it. I then run a computer program (Excel) on it and reject anything for rapid fire that is over 2 Standard Deviations (SD) away from the mean in that lot. I find myself rejecting a very high amount of MagTech and Remington ammo. Their QA sucks! MagTech in particular has wild deviation within any specific lot of their ammo. I find Hornady, Federal and Winchester (White Box, believe it or not!) to be very consistent, with few rounds rejected. There are probably some others that are good, but I find everything I need within those three, so I haven't tested other brands. As I fire and carry mostly S&W revolvers (one lone Glock 23 the exception) I can't say whether this helps function as the Glock functions 100% firing everything, cheap or not, American made or not. I can say it sure as heck helps accuracy, in revolvers and the Glock.

I have many pistols and many shotguns but only one centerfire rifle and it is a 30-06. I don't need anything else in a rifle!

One ? about a HCP requirement caveat
wjh2657 replied to fizik's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Fun things you have to give up after getting an HCP: 1. Drinking yourself silly (while carrying or anywhere near a handgun.) 2. Losing your temper and starting fights. 3. Swaggering into a redneck bar and telling the meanest guy in the bar that his mother knew every sailor in the Seventh Fleet. 4. Suffering delusions that you are Superman. Above items will sound familiar to fellow Devil Dogs, it was a typical Olongapo City liberty! A recent DUI makes the State think you haven't outgrown liberty call yet. -
How prepared are you mentally?
wjh2657 replied to Craftypoppa's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
On any one day you or may not be concentrating on your surroundings, regardless of training. just try to stay alert at all times. I am a Christian and a retired Marine. Love everyone but trust no one! -
My favorite of the "pocket plinkers", the S&W 2214. Accurate, reliable (with CCI minimag ammo) and easy to clean. This one has been my fishing vest gun for almost two decades now.

Zero failure tolerance. A well maintained .38 Spl or .357 Magnum revolver. No gimmicks, just rock solid dependability.

Even though I no longer claim any political party affiliation, I do vote every election. I register as a Republican ( I am a free market Conservative)for the primary because there also local offices included in the primary election and local referendums for local issues at General elections. I believe that the system does work very well and fairly at local (State/County) level. National elections have been hijacked however.I know that it is not a democratic election at national level because we are force fed who will run through the Primary System and National Conventions but I can't morally say anything if I don't vote and again there are other issues voted on during the election process. This by the way is how historians support the contention that 75% of WWII Germany was Nazi. You could vote and register Nazi or you could register and vote Communist. Most people who registered and voted for the NSDAP weren't pro-Nazi, they were just afraid of the Communists! Hitler did come to power through a "democratic" election.

The Answer Is *NOT* Thug Tactics
wjh2657 replied to TGO David's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I have learned to accept that there are going to be rules I don't like and times that I can't carry my gun. For those who are deadly sure they are going to be attacked as soon as they aren't carrying a gun, don't join the military. I drill every month with the TN State Guard and we cannot carry weapons onto the facility, not even locked up in the trunk. Since I live 87 miles from the base, I have to make the whole trip that day, unarmed. It would be the same for any other Reserve or Guard member. I EDC but took my gun off and locked it in the COM Safe in the trunk when I ate at Chilis before the law and I guess I'll just do it again. (they weren't posted by the way.) I like the food and I am not going to deprive my wife of eating at one of her favorite restaurants because the law (not Chilis btw) says I can't wear my gun while I eat. I would rather carry my gun but I am not going to go high and right just because of the change. I will continue to support the campaign to allow carrying in restaurants and I hope it does come back, but I will still eat at Chilis. I pick where I eat by the quality of the food and service not what sticker or poster they have in their window. Before all of the 2dA "militia" jump on me, I am not a Brady supporter, I am an NRA supporter. I think some of the posters need to get a life that includes other things along with guns. The gun is an important tool but I wasn't born with it attached to my body. It doesn't have to be surgically removed.
