  1. Looks like your cat has the situation closely supervised :)
  2. I don't think it's ilegal to carry that amount of cash, but if you bank with amounts of that level - being an individual that is not normally expected  to be dealing with transactions in that amount, the bank can/will file a SAR - suspicous activity report - that goes to IRS and/or FinCEN.   I had thought the limit was $10,000, but it may actually be $5,000.. just did a bit of Googling on it.

  4.   This worries me way more than anything else that has happened (politically) since the re-election......
  5. Two kinds of vultures that are common around here- turkey vultures and black vultures.   Turkey vultures have a red head/face, and black ones have black or grayish head.   Turkey vultures are often more aggressive, and ones that I see around here are usually larger than black vultures.

  7. I have been trying to do some reading and research into determining whether there is a lead poisoning (or other illness) risk from unfired ammunition.   I've seen a lot of information about firing ranges, reloading, cleaning, picking up brass, etc-   however, I have not seen anything about potential dangers from unfired ammunition.   Obviously, you wouldn't want to put a handful in you mouth or anything like that-  but, would any of you know anything about any possible dangers that might exist?   My dog sleeps very close to where I keep ammo stored (within 1 foot), and I'm trying to figure out whether I need to move the ammo to another room to be safe, or if it's not a big deal.   Thanks-

  11. A good read-   http://www.wearepolitics.com/1/post/2013/01/a-letter-from-sheriff-howard-sills-to-senator-saxby-chambliss.html   Sorry if this is a dupe post, but I didn't see another-
  12. Where can I find a schedule of events for what is going to be in the house or senate?
  13. I went last year.  It was a great time-  I would have had even more fun if I hadn't been under the hood of my truck for 3 days in 95* heat making 'improvements'.  Lots of great folks there happy to jump in and help with a wrench.   Hope I can get back this year.
  14. In addition to everything else, no one needs a 'Slide Iron, that mimicks fully automatic capability' either.   I am also curious how quickly this will (or will not) make it to the floor for a vote.
  15. Reid may be backtracking on his stance about not allowing the senate to vote on it.   http://news.yahoo.com/senate-leader-may-allow-vote-assault-weapons-ban-224514060.html
  16. You all have made some very good points, and I appreciate it.  I probably should have made my initial post clearer, with regards to kids.   They are my main concern- as I and several others of you have talked about.  I know I wouldn't do anything dumb with it, but I also was once a kid who did stupid things, so, there's my concern.   I really like the idea of the small safe by the bed.    If I lived alone, I'd absolutely have all my firearms ready to go and dispersed through the house- Seems dumb to have something you can't use.   I just can't do that with little kids pokin' all around the place (not to mention their friends). Gotta find a smarter solution, which is obviously why I asked   Thanks!
  17. 11 y/o boy and 8 y/o girl.   My son has been doing quite well with the .22 I bought him a year ago-  he's very interested in it, will readily sit with me and go over the parts, talk about safety, and goes to the range with me quite a bit.   The daughter has been to the range, and will pretty much do whatever I tell her when it comes to this topic, but she's still pretty young.   I'm not so scared that they'll do something blatantly stupid (although, kids have a tendency to not think critically all the time), more concerned of an accidental discharge if somebody decides not to be smart all the sudden.  I'm a strong believer in Murphy's Law, and I want to try to stack the odds in my favor. Like, heaviliy in my favor.
  18. Thanks for the replies- all of the answers are in line with my thoughts too, and I'm well aware that an unloaded weapon is basically a paperweight, but I have struggled a bit with incorporating the practice with kids roaming around the house. I'll build a higher shelf I guess!
  19. Hi folks, just thought I'd try to get a sense of how you all deal with your home defense weapon in the overnight hours-    I know some people who use a handgun will keep the firearm and a loaded magazine near them while sleeping, and they can just put the mag in and be good to go if something happens.   What if your home defense weapon of choice is a shotgun?  Can't really keep it in the safe overnight-  won't help if someone suddenly barges in the house.  By the same token, keeping the shotgun sitting out somewhere with a handful of shells next to it really seems like a hindrance as well-  you'd still have to load it with someone coming into (or already into) the house.   So would you keep it loaded overnight, then unload and stow it during the day?  I'm trying to figure out the happy balance between safety and accessability in a home defense situation...   Thanks for your thoughts-
  20. Sounds like something I would be interested in. Franklin would be very do-able for me-  Please let me know.
  21. Quoted from somewhere else:   'I think a lot of what was done was purely political in the same sense that has marked Obama's entire time in office. He put most of the responsibility on Congress. He will take credit if he gets his way, or beat Republicans with the failure stick if he doesn't. If you were Obama, would you rather have wins on individual issues, or would you rather use issues to destroy your opponents so you could eventually win everything?'
  22. Just heard the press conference will be around noon tomorrow, with the prez surrounded by children who wrote (whose parents probably wrote) him letters after Sandy Hook.
