  1.   Same here, only mine wasn't purchased at Walmart. I think it was purchased at Sears way back when they actually had a sporting goods department with honest-to-god firearms... you know, one of those big free-standing Sears stores before the mega-mall days? Was purchased around 1979. I no longer have the box, but the Ruger is still going strong, and is one of my most accurate pistols-- particularly with .22WMR.
  2. I had a maverick 88 security model, was a great little inexpensive HD firearm, and I kinda liked the loosey-goosey action. My son loved it, so I gave it to him for his 23rd birthday this year, since I already had a 500 persuader as well. The biggest drawback to the Mavericks is the pinned action bars on the forend, which prevent you from swapping out Mossy 500 forends. However, there are a couple of companies who have come out with replacement forends specifically for the 88 series-- complete with action bars already mounted. Necessity is the mother of invention. :usa:
  3.  If you can't buy one like that, you can certainly make one. The model 88 accepts most Mossberg 500 barrels.
  4.      Good. Maybe the online division of Cabelas will finally ship my freakin' 5-month old backorder.
  5.   Somehow, I don't think you'll get many reasons from this crowd. General sentiment is that it's not worth it to go most of the time... I'm inclined to agree. I don't go to the shows much anymore unless: (1) I'm totally bored and have nothing else to do, (2)I'm looking for something very specific and I KNOW that a certain vendor will be there with what I need. (3) if I am in desperate need of comedic entertainment, I'll go just to see the re-seller ammo prices-- that's always good for a laugh.
  6.   You mean to tell me that there's actually a border? Would you mind passing that info on to "Big Sis", please? I'm not too sure that DHS got the memo on this.
  7.   Most Maverick components are made in Mexico, but the firearms are all assembled in Texas.
  8.   Obviously, this Kirby salesman is confusing Kirby vacuums with NFA class III weapons.   Kirby salesman = bald faced liar.
  9. To far for me, but best of luck to them! That's pretty intrepid of them to open a range during a major ammo famine.
  10. Wow... guess I was too slow on the editing...
  11. nevermind. I had a smart-ass remark, but on 2nd read it wasn't worth posting.   Carry on.
  12. I'm a Mossberg 500 man myself. 20" Persuader model. 7+1 capacity.
  13.   Just be sure that you are looking for the unedited version, and not the one-sided NBC/MSNBC edit.
  14.   Of course. The stockpiling is just a one component in the overall situation. Seeing Walmart "exclusive packaged" Federal ammo at 3-4X the original price on Armslist is another. We all KNOW what they paid for it. The packaging is a dead giveaway.
  15.     +1. People who didn't normally stockpile are now doing so. This is having a prolonged impact on overall availability.
  16. Things have been improving, but still hit or miss most of the time at general retailers. Was at east side Walmart in Murfreesboro around lunch today. Plenty of rifle rounds, but handgun ammo was almost non-existent. However they DID have about 10 boxes of PPU 9mm FMJ. Also had big boxes (25 rnds) of Estate brand (France) 00 buckshot-- I'm well-set for 9mm,so I left it all on the shelf for others. Did pick up a box of the 00 buckshot though-- can never have enough of that when it comes to defending the homefront. The interesting thing is that this particular Walmart has a very easy-to-see sign that plainly states that all ammo is stocked at 7:00am. Which means the 9mm had been there since 7, yet there were still 10 boxes on the shelf at $14.99/box. That's a positive sign.
  17.   This.   The contextual use of the word "kill" was not introduced until the King James version, which was not a very good translation in this case. In the Hebrew text, the word used refers to "murder", not killing in general. big difference.
  18.   More than I would have paid, but then again, it sounds like you bought competition-grade ammo, which is usually more expensive anyway. Don't sweat it-- at least you have some now. Treat yourself by rationing a 50-rnd box and taking a trip to the range!   The madness will end eventually, it's just going to take a while, especially for .22.
  19. I recently bought a Henry AR-7 from Academy. Even with the minor hassle factor of the manager checking/OK'ing the paperwork and the "LOOK EVERYONE! I just bought a gun!" walk to the front BS, I got the gun for about $50 below MSRP. Saw the same firearm at a couple other shops AND at the Murfreesboro gun show for around $20-30 over MSRP, so I was happy. Actually, the procedure for buying from them is just about the same as buying from Bass Pro Shops, but usually a little cheaper than BPS. I got no problem with Academy.
  20.     When I read the term "defensive caliber" I automatically assumed handguns as well. I didn't bother to list the other 6 calibers I use for longarms.
  21. Wow. The only time I ever score like that is when some guy offers me an old wrist rocket and a handful of ball bearings. :stunned:
  22. Three. 9mm-- from Memorial Day to Labor Day (or whenever lighter summer clothing is appropriate, which sometimes stretches into mid-late Oct. here in TN) .45ACP-- for the months & times not covered above and .22WMR-- every day of the year, in my NAA Black Widow (last resort BUG).   I use Hornady Critical Defense most of the time for each caliber, but I have carried other types of JHP as well.
  23.   I guess that all depends on whether you are dealing with an intelligent, reasonable LEO, or a "cowboy".
  24. Got there around 12:30, paid the discounted admission, and looked around. Was not impressed with the amount of flea market merchandise this time around-- the last show in Dec. 2012 was much better. Saw a few things that I was interested in, but not anything that I couldn't live without.   I think the fact that there were also shows 20 miles away in Lebanon and 60 miles away in Sparta may have affected both vendors and attendees.
  25. I'm planning to drop in after lunch today. I hate fighting the morning crowd line, and I'm not desperate to find anything specific.
