URGENT - Permit-less Car Carry in the Senate Tomorrow
Mike A replied to wk05's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Likewise, I didn't do any exhaustive research. A quick search turned up an FAQ on the TBI site stating their position from my previous post. FWIW, if the thinking is that the annual checks are required to comply with the Brady Bill my guess would be that the passage of any such bill would require a provision requiring the annual checks and increasing the cost of the HCP. I'm not debating the right or wrong of the matter mind you but in the end there ain't no free lunch. -
I like mine. Paid $450 used about a year and half ago and felt like I got a good deal at the time (only about 200 rounds thru it pre-purchase, Hogue grips and no idiot mark until I got a hold of it). The rebate really has me tempted on a 14.45 in SS.

URGENT - Permit-less Car Carry in the Senate Tomorrow
Mike A replied to wk05's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
The link you had posted earlier is showing the fiscal note with the 3/24/14 corrections. As I read it DOS is saying no impact. I presume there would still be an impact on TBI as previously noted. Out of curiosity, I did a quick check on the "HCP for NICS" bill. The fiscal note on that one (as to the TBI) was similar ($300K and change for "HCP for NICS" vs. $400K and change in the instant matter). For reference, I believe the TBI budget request (just from the State, not including Fed funds, etc.) was $44M. So, in either case less than 1% of the budget request. In fairness, right or wrong, looked like the TBI's position is that the "HCP check" didn't comply with the Brady Bill as HCP holders aren't subject to annual checks. -

The fiscal note was corrected again on 3/24/14 and unless I'm misreading something I believe DOS is now saying that the bill will not impact the department. I wouldn't count this one out yet. -
Feasibility of new FFL business in Gallatin / Hartsville / Lebanon area
Mike A replied to wtl's topic in General Chat
I love small businesses but do take a hard look at the downside. Folks tend to get excited at the prospect of a new business (particularly if they’re passionate about the industry as are most potential small business owners) and don’t always vet the situation sufficiently. Sounds like you don’t expect to open up and start printing money and you have other streams of income. Those are definitely in your favor. My threshold question is from where would you draw business? I live and work in Gallatin. I’ll touch on Hartsville and Lebanon but most definitely defer to those with undoubtedly greater knowledge on the situations in those cities. Hartsville --> There’s a fairly new shop at the corner of Hartsville Pike and 231. There’s a thread on here somewhere. Don’t think they have a range and as such don’t think they’re doing HCP classes. Lebanon --> I believe there are quite a few shops. I know at least one has an indoor range and I suspect maybe several do. I further suspect that one or more are doing HCP classes. Gallatin --> Two full service shops with ranges teaching HCP classes. Additionally, there’s a pawn shop here with an indoor range. I think if you keep your startup expenses low, it may ultimately be like playing friendly low stakes poker. You may lose a little, may win a little and in the long run probably about break even. My $0.02. -
So I begin my descent into madness...
Mike A replied to whitewolf001's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I haven't checked out their shipping costs, but fsreloading.com seems to have pretty unbeatable prices. -
Seems like I read in another thread that it's the same as the Academy house brand (Monarch) at least as to the .223.

I like my 30SF. I use a Fobus paddle holster for OWB with a long shirt. No comfort issues and I have been told it doesn't print. In full disclosure, as to the print issue I am morbidly obese. I could probably carry a pocket .380 in a fat fold. Additionally, I do not have it on my hip every time i walk out the door. I'm sure a lot of the other posters have way more holster time with theirs. I had thought to get a single stack .45 for warm weather shorts and t-shirt carry but I'm going to try IWB on the 30SF first. On the recommendation of a friend, I've ordered an Alien Gear IWB holster. Looks pretty similar to the Crossbreed Supertuck and the Galco King Tuk (the other holsters I considered) but at a lower price point. FWIW, my buddy has his 30SF on his hip every time he walks out the door and he likes the Alien Gear. Haven't tried a lot of different SD ammo (hard to make myself fire too much of the pricey stuff) but I did come across a good deal on some Federal 230gr. Hydrashok some time back and haven't found a reason to dislike it to this point.

URGENT - Permit-less Car Carry in the Senate Tomorrow
Mike A replied to wk05's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I was not aware of that but it does not surprise me. I suspect that most of the members of the legislature are probably assigned to committees related to their occupations or experience. I agree that the attorneys have a disproportionate effect on the matters handled by that committee. I do not know why the attorneys on that committee voted against that bill nor do I know enough about the bill to offer my worthless speculation. That said, while I do not follow the legislature intently, I do from time to time get information and summaries regarding bills in specific areas. Any time you start thinking the legislature passes some absurd laws, look at the ones that don't pass. There are quite a few "sounds like a good idea" and "this will be popular with my constituents" bills that get proposed that thankfully die when someone points out that those bills are unworkable or constitutionally infirm. Some of those "someones" are attorneys. Just saying :). -

Based upon how they self report their occupations (there may be a few closet JDs out there), there are I believe 9 reps and 6 senators who are attorneys. (If I've missed one or two, mea culpa but I'm pretty close.) That's 15 out of 132. Significant no doubt but not at all an overwhelming number considering how many other industries are represented in equal or greater numbers. Ever count how many business owners there are? Bankers? My bet would be on insurance agent as the number one occupation. I'd suggest that one of the problems has been that their weren't enough lawyers in the legislature at times. I'm not suggesting that non-attorneys aren't capable of understanding the process nor that all attorneys are the best and brightest. I would say that blaming "all the lawyers" is a bit of an over simplification. -
Discounts for C&R License Holders
Mike A replied to Mike A's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
I think it's probably a competitive advantage issue in general. If you're the only one that does it, you have an advantage. If everyone else does it, maybe you have to as well to keep up. I'd suspect as a group C&R holders probably spend more than non-licensees, making them an attractive demographic. I suspect most of the discounts are fairly small but human behavior is such a funny thing. Small courtesies sometimes affect us disproportionally. If you look at most of the retail loyalty programs and crunch the numbers the payout is usually nominal. You spend how much in groceries to save a few cents per gallon of gas. I suspect the retailers come out way ahead given the effect it has in training the consumer. The ultimate example had to be the old "green stamps." For those of you under 40, if memory serves me, retailers (mostly grocery stores) gave out little stamps you collected in books that you could trade in for merchandise at the redemption center. I bet if you could crunch the return on those it must have been in the tenths of a percent. Contacted Southern Ohio Gun and was told that they accept C&R licenses and that all their pricing is dealer pricing. They do sell non-C&R firearms as well and of course you can't purchase those with your C&R. Thanks for the responses. -
Apologies in advance if there's an up to date thread here that I've missed in my searches. I've searched the interwebz for lists of e-tailers that offer discounts / dealer pricing to C&R license holders but haven't found anything that looks reasonably up to date (mostly circa '06-'07). I've taken from the tone of a few posts here that fewer companies offer such a discount than in the past. Specifically seem to remember mention that Midway no longer does so. I've contacted Brownells and was told that they do offer such discounts. Anyone else? MA

A few weeks back I purchased a Mohu Leaf antenna as well as what amounts to Amazon’s knock off of same. Sorry to necro the thread but I just got around to trying out the antennas on all the applicable televisions. For reference, from the research I’ve done, I’m about 20-30 miles from most of the major towers. Television one (1) (wall mounted HD): Virtually no difference between the two antennas. Both picked up ABC, CBS, FOX, CW, WB, several smaller stations and multiple sub-channels with minimal fiddling. Both seem to do best with window placement if possible. Neither picked up PBS which from my research is the most difficult to pick up in my area. Television two (2) (old as dirt CRT that won’t die): I had to run this through a digital converter box if that makes a difference. Due to the layout, window placement wasn’t really possible on this one. Essentially the same report except that the Amazon model actually seemed to produce a little better picture quality. Television three (3) (wall mounted HD): This room has a different orientation and is the only television upon which I was able to pick up PBS but only with the Mohu. Otherwise, same results with both models. There tis for what it’s worth.

Seattle: Doesn't make a lot of mistakes. Has a strong running game. Plays tough defense. Seahawks 21-17.

Here's a potentially helpful link for your friend: http://www.hollinslegal.com/articles/stick-to-your-guns-restoration-of-tennessee/ While I certainly place great value in the ability to vote, the take away your friend should get from this article is that he needs to get an attorney who is THOROUGHLY VERSED in the "restoration of gun rights." Not that the OP had any intentions of offering advice to the contrary, but this is ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY not one of those situations where you can copy some document off the interwebs and do-it-yourself. Just so no to the federal pen.

After thinking about it off and on for the last few years and with my latest Uverse promotion about to expire I've started prepping for cutting the cord. I saw some good reviews on the Mohu Leaf and have ordered one as well as an Amazon knock off. Should have them next week. From the recent threads, looks like we have a lot of cord cutters here. Unless someone posts info on the Muhu in the interim, I'll post something after I have a chance to check them out.

If you're really determined, tell her that revolvers make her look fat.

How does this compare to the Hendersonville show (which I understand from another thread is likely a thing of the past or at least for RK)? Is there a lot of vendor overlap?

Who do you have your auto and homeowners insurance with?
Mike A replied to jeff43's topic in General Chat
After close to 30 years with State Farm for home and auto (other than some years when we had a friend who was an independent agent hook us up with Safeco for auto (worked out pretty well at the time when we had teenage drivers)) we went with an independent agent, Zander (one of Dave Ramsey's preferred). I'll probably never go back to a captive agent. I know for me if it's not relatively easy to shop, I won't. Zander got us on board with Encompass (they're owned by Allstate). Can't say anything about claims yet as we've just been with them a few months but we ended up saving about one-third over SF. The Zander agent said Encompass has a very high renewal rate. I can't remember the exact percentage but it made me feel better presuming that if the service was too bad or they are inclined to jack their rates too much it would affect their renewal rate. -
I hope you'll post them here in the classifieds as you let go of them.

Not that I can improve on FG's post but a few related thoughts: -- As a fairly experienced cigar smoker but relative pipe newbie and primarily seasonal at that, if cigars are checkers, pipes are chess. Much more technique and nuisance. Puffing enough to keep the bowl going but not so much that the pipe "overheats." Cigarette smokers are at a particular disadvantage as most are used to huffing one down standing under an overhang in the pouring rain. -- As FG says, some blends just burn hotter. I find a pipe with thicker walls helps, especially with the sweeter aromatics. -- Collecting pipes can be as addictive as collecting guns. I've moved slow but I've got buddies with collections in triple digits. If you get the bug or just want a lower entry point, be sure to look at estate pipes. I've picked up a couple of nice estate pipes in really good shape for ~25-40% of the new price. Fortunately pipes are also like firearms in that folks that care keep their stuff in good condition.

Seems like your original question was more about the logistics of selling a vehicle with debt owed on it but as the thread has drifted, I’ll throw in my $0.02. I’m all about reducing debt, but I question whether you’ll get the intended result for the following reasons: 1) KBB numbers are IMHO a fair bit on the high side. 2) I’ve never purchased a used car that I didn’t end up dropping money into within the first 6 months or so. The sweet spot on used car prices (i.e., where you’ve let the previous owner take the hit on depreciation) seems to be about the same point where stuff wears out. I’m just afraid you’d be making a lot of moves for very little return and a lot of uncertainty. The only way I’d do it is if I was willing to go really cheap on the replacement vehicle. I’m talking sub $2,000. You don’t often get much vehicle for that kind of money. You’re basically looking for a get you through car. I’ve done it back in the day. My hope was to get a month out of the car for every $100 I spent between purchase price and “true†repairs (i.e. catalytic converter replacement versus maintenance items like tires and batteries). That’s been a while so my numbers are probably unrealistic now. In short, it doesn’t sound like you’re willing (or possibly able) to go that cheap. I’d suggest you may be better of keeping the current vehicle, paying it off like a madman and then driving it until the wheels fall off. I think even at $500/mo. you’d be out in less than 2 years. After you pay off the car, stack up cash like crazy. Don’t stop at the down payment. Make sure you’ve got a good kitty to spare. People get house fever because well intentioned advisors tell them how they’re wasting money paying rent. Home ownership is great but it can be more curse than blessing when you forget to take into account that you have to buy a lawnmower, roofs leak and all that stuff that the landlord took care of is now your responsibility.

For those who've been to both, how does this compare to the RK Show in Hendersonville? Is there a lot of vendor overlap?

Might consider going with an independent agent. Makes it easier (and as such more likely for me) to shop your policies and switch if it makes sense. I think at least some of the companies count on consumers overlooking smaller increases until you get to the point where you realize how much your rates have gone up after several renewal cycles. In any case, make sure to shop both your auto and homeowners at the same time. From what I've seen, if you don't, you just end up spreading the money around without saving any.

As unsexy as it sounds, I think it's really more about demographics than ideology. Radio is an older medium and draws an older audience. Talk radio listeners as a subset skew yet older. Political talk radio draws an even older demo relative to other talk radio. Older generally equates to "conservative." Generally eschewing empirical data lest it get in the way of one of my theories, I nevertheless did a quick search on Twitter followers. Twitter = newer media = younger demographics and younger generally equating to "liberal." Rush Limbaugh --> < 250,000 Rachel Maddow --> a tad over 2.6 million CNN breaking news --> ~12 million Fox News --> ~3 million My $0.02.
