Seems that you can use the same rule of thumb with freezes as you can with purchasing a safe. Buy one twice the size you think you'll need or whatever can be afforded. I used to have a couple "chest" style deep freezes and I wouldn't give a dime for another one because once you get past the first layer you have to dig every time you want something. I got lucky about a year and a half ago when my dad decided to stop and look at something someone had in their yard sale and noticed they were getting rid of their upright freezer. It's a fairly late model freezer (can't remember which brand) and she was asking $200 for it and ended up taking $150. My wife and I made ourselves a deal that we would not just throw things in there and we've pretty well stuck to that but the fact that it's an upright really makes that much easier. I rarely have to move more than 1-2 things to get at what i'm after and that has made it MUCH more enjoyable and kept it from turning into a frozen food graveyard. I'm having to stay at my folks place while they're ot of town but will check the size of it and report back once were back at home.

July 9th......another for your inspection....

That is an incredible looking knife you've made! The etching turned out fantastic as well. -
Wish there were a way to place an ad with the link you found and have it show up just below his!

Hmm.. I don't follow them closely outside of NRA political interactions so I didn't know if i'd missed something. I didn't renew my membership this year and sent my money to NAGR instead. I just feel that they have been more effective and a newer more fiery voice. I had no idea of anything you've mentioned other than only caring about the money, they are in the business of soliciting funds after all. Last year another member here signed up with the NRA and part of the deal was that as part of the membership he would receive a small cheap chinese pocket knife. When he received his membership packet there was no knife and in it's place was a sheet to fill out that stated something to the effect of "we've sent you this form in case you would like for the cost of the knife to go to us as well but if you must have the knife the fill out the form and mail it back" If i'm not mistaken they even asked for S&H but that could be me remembering a joke we made about it after we read the form.

I second Hozzie's suggestion! I have handled a few of them and they feel great. They are light but are sturdy and have a good feel to them. All articles and reviews that I have read on them have been great as well. Great bang for the buck IMO.

300 win mag or 6.5 creedmoor for long range shooting
Luke E. replied to a topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I would think that ammo price would be almost a non issue if this is just a hunting rifle or at least mostly a hunting rifle because you'd have to be doing a heck of a lot of hunting for the price difference per round to add up to much at all when compared to the price of the rifle and cost of going on the hunts themselves. Hornady 120gr amax are $26.49 at Midway for the Creedmoor and Hornady 178gr amax for the 300 win mag are $34.49 at Midway so unless he's got a steel shoulder (300 Win mag) and runs through a ton of ammo the savings would be negligible. I have read 2 or 3 articles about hunting with the Creedmoor and the reviews were great but a longer ranges it is going to lose a lot to the 300 Win mag in knock down power due to bullet weight. I'd say that out at 5-600yds on Muledeer size game and smaller the Creedmoor would get it done in style but no matter what the scenario is, if the Creedmoor does a good job of knocking the game down, the Win mag is going to do a better job of knocking it down. Here's another possible factor, recoil, while it's no 50bmg or even .338 Lapua the 300 Win mag is no slouch in the recoil dept so the Creedmoor clearly wins this round if recoil is a factor for your dad. I've not had the opportunity to fire a Creedmoor yet but I have looked at one of the cartridges as well as owned and fired 300 Win mag and I just can't help but think that there would be a massive differences. Bottom line for me though is if I were going after elk or game as large a moose I am going to go with the 300Win mag, hands down. There's was a saying among the drag race crowd, "there's no replacement for displacement" and the Win mag certainly has more displacement and more fire behind it. Last but not least, if your dad needs a hunting partner for these "out west" trips I can sacrifice and make myself available! -
300 win mag or 6.5 creedmoor for long range shooting
Luke E. replied to a topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I think the Creedmoor is a flatter shooting round but I don't know that its the better hunter. 300 Win mag is going to have more powder pushing, potentially, a much heavier bullet which is not to say that the 6.5 can't get the job done. I guess it's going to come down to how far he might be taking a shot. -
Thanks. By the way, The upper looks great! I have yet to ever use the forward assist to force a round into any of my other rifles but I do use a .223 and 300aac to hunt with some so I do like that I can use them to chamber a round quietly instead of letting the bolt slam full speed ahead scaring off anything within a mile. I won't be using this rifle to hunt with so I had no use for the assist on this one and your slick side looks very clean. The next one I build will be more of a competition type rifle and I plan to use your slick sided upper on that as well. I know it's been 7-8 months now but thanks again for making the receivers available to the TGO members like you did!!

CMMG...Why, oh, why did I listen to Outpost Armory?
Luke E. replied to E4 No More's topic in Long Guns
Gotcha. Well again, glad you got it handled and hope you enjoy the rifle! An AR in 9mm or .45 is on my very short list of "must have ASAP" items and I've been looking hard at the CMMG offering or at least using their parts to build the upper. -

Luke E. replied to E4 No More's topic in Long Guns
I wasn't suggesting that you were one of them. I was simply agreeing that those people exist which is the only thing that I could agree with him on. Well I'm glad you have it resolved and you're happy. That's all that matters. -
You left the colorful language options wide open by allowing 7 characters in your "insert favorite curse here" area... I like that! :usa:

Not that this means anything but I have attended an impromptu archery tournament (a couple bows and targets got brought out during a cookout) within the Murfreesboro city limits in which 2 Sheriff's deputies attended and participated. I personally would get after the Garden destroyer and not think twice about it but I guess as a disclaimer I must say to check with your local law enforcement.

That would be awesome! I've got a few farms that I shoot when I don't have time to go to the range so a place to shoot is no issue. I'll send you a pm.

CMMG...Why, oh, why did I listen to Outpost Armory?
Luke E. replied to E4 No More's topic in Long Guns
I think the story of the first rifle and the story of the second rifle are being combined again as well as the addition of the OP trying to return something which he never stated trying to do. All he seems to want is a functioning rifle and until he carries his still un fired rifle to Outpost to show them the problem none of us, including the OP, will know how they'll choose to handle it. I tend to have faith that Outpost will see an un fired rifle that is missing a part and find some way to make it right rather than washing their hands of it and sending him down the road. And again, as for the first rifle, we have no idea as to the time that elapsed between purchase and him realizing that the sights were off somehow and just reading that first paragraph gives me the impression that there wasn't such a long time between purchase and test fire as there was on this second rifle. -

CMMG...Why, oh, why did I listen to Outpost Armory?
Luke E. replied to E4 No More's topic in Long Guns
I wasn't aware that making sure to fire a rifle within a certain amount of time was a matter of personal responsibility much less a personal responsibility that takes priority over work, family, etc.. Most of the men and women on TGO LOVE to shoot and spend time at the range or field so i'm going to go out on a limb and assume that leaving the rifle marinating in the safe for 8 months wouldn't have been his move of choice if more important responsibilities hadn't gotten in the way. Another thing is that the OP has not mentioned Outpost nor CMMG giving him a problem about whether it's been 1 day, 8 months or 2yrs since he bought it so i'm thinking his frustration is stemming from being pushed off on the manufacturer on the first rifle and/or having an issue with the 2nd rifle. Who knows, he may carry it in there Monday and Outpost tell him that they'd be happy to get it taken care or for him. I can certainly imagine that there are a great number of cases of "buyers remorse" and "my wife wasn't quite as receptive to a new gun as I thought she'd be" and that sucks for the shop and the salesman that may have be paid on commission but a xx day return policy would fix anything like that from happening outside of that time frame. The difference here is that the OP wasn't trying to "return" or "trade" the first CMMG rifle that had sight issues, he just wanted it looked at and fixed and felt whomever he spoke with at Outpost should have had someone look at it rather than brushing him off and telling him that he'd have to send it to CMMG himself. He didn't trade the rifle until after attempting to have the problem remedied. I have seen what you speak of first hand though, A friend of mine had that happen from time to time when he had his FFL and there were a couple of times, after some questioning, the buyer let something slip that made it very evident that he had gone home and found it cheaper on Buds or some other online wholesaler and decided that he would return it claiming it was defective and then turn around and order the gun online to save $30 or 40 bucks. One guy was so dumb that 3 days after returning the "defective" pistol (which my buddy offered to replace with another out of the case) he came in to get FFL info faxed over to have the very same pistol transferred at my buddy's shop.. Needless to say, this guy was the kind of douche you are talking about and he was refused service. Also, the OP stated that he "took it in the butt to trade it in on a SIG" which tells me that he either indeed told the shop that he traded it to that something was wrong or he wouldn't have had to "take it in the butt" (hypothetically I HOPE), or he traded it for the Sig at Outpost which they would have known of the issue since that's the reason he brought it in. I certainly am not and will never argue that FACT that there ARE tons of rotten A'holes that will try to manipulate the system to their benefit even if it's wrong, unethical and a show or poor character but i'm inclined to argue against life being busy and not having time to make it to the range in a timely manner makes the OP one of the aforementioned "rotten A'holes" -
CMMG...Why, oh, why did I listen to Outpost Armory?
Luke E. replied to E4 No More's topic in Long Guns
You're not married are you? I ask this for 2 reasons, 1 is that once married, things don't always go exactly as you would wish nor do they happen within the choice timeline that you would choose if your own wants and desires were the only ones to take into consideration.2 is that, and I know everyone has heard this before, weeks go by incredibly fast once you've hit that milestone. I'm sure others will agree but months go by like weeks, it literally seems like Christmas was just 4-5 weeks back.- 63 replies

When i'm at gun shows I seldom look at guns 9mainly just Davids tables and accesories and other random items), especially in the last couple of years but for some reason my eyes are drawn to the CJ's and I have to handle each one I come across. I always think "man, i'd love to have one of these" but like a few others have mentioned, there are many other firearms that are above it on my punch list. I would like to have one eventually so I hope you (OP) are right about them being a fad so that I am able to score one at a bigger discount when that time rolls around.

CMMG...Why, oh, why did I listen to Outpost Armory?
Luke E. replied to E4 No More's topic in Long Guns
I try to fire 20rds rifle or 50rds pistol through any new firearm within the first couple of weeks for this very reason. It helps that I can walk out the back door and fire into a dirt bank enough to function test or run a couple miles around the road to one of my buddies farms to get a bit more in depth. If I didn't have those places at my disposal then I would most definitely be in the same boat because it seems like I either get tons of range time, range opportunities or I get zero range time and anytime I get something new i'm sure you can guess which end of the spare time spectrum i'm usually in. -
Thanks for the tip. I have all new Lapua brass to load whenever I get it finished up so I won't be forming any 7.62x39 brass.

New Surplus Pistol Powder from David (DLM37015)
Luke E. replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thanks for posting this Gordon! My wife signed us up for a rather pricey beach house vacation so funds are locked down tight until that's over and done with at the end of the month but hopefully there will still be some or be more at that point. On one hand I have enough Titegroup and Red Dot to shoot pistol for years (unless I aquire a 9mm or .45 carbine) so it's hard to justify buying any more pistol powder but on the other hand I sure would like to give it a try. -
CMMG...Why, oh, why did I listen to Outpost Armory?
Luke E. replied to E4 No More's topic in Long Guns
I would take it back to Outpost in person and explain the situation and pull the bolt and demonstrate the malfunction. I have had good luck with the reloading staff as well as some of the "gun guys" but I am 0 for 5 with good experiences over the phone down there (when someone answers). It's also a lot easier to push someone off on the manufacturer over the phone and no one wants to try that move in front of others that are trying to decide whether or not to buy a firearm from them. I would suggest talking with Dan (pretty sure that's his name) in the gun dept. as he seems like quite the no nonsense kind of guy and also seems to truly give a sh!t about the Outpost name. I've been around a handful of CMMG rifles and never had an issue but it sounds like you and I have about the same kind of luck. Good luck getting it all straightened out. -
I'm 99% sure there is no law against a bb gun but i'm sure there's someone here that is 100% sure one way or the other. I will saw that I regularly shoot a BB gun at another members house on a 1/4 acre lot in Murfreesboro and have no fear doing so. I say pop that "wascally wabbit"!

I traded my TGO upper with bolt assist and dust cover to another member for a slick sided upper. I'm building a 6.5 Grendel (ever so slowly) and I liked the idea of not having the bolt assist and whatnot hanging on the side. Just curious if anyone has built one yet and if so, would you mind throwing a pic up of it. Here's mine for those that haven't seen them,
