Wanting (maybe needing) to start reloading...
Ray Z replied to charlessummers's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I suggest that you go on line and shop for a rock chuckermaster master reloading kit [amazon and ebay are a good place to look]. I think if I were you I wouldn't buy a lee reloader. They aren't built to last. You should always start with a single station press and later, you can go to a production press [Dillon] after you have experience [1 1/2 - 2 years] . Everybody has their own preference on bullets, powder, and primers. I like Montana gold bullets, solo 1000 powder, and Winchester primers. Somebody else will have different likes and dislikes. To save the most money buy your primers by the sleeve [5000] you powder by the largest container, and bullets by case. Before getting started get yourself a good book on reloading and a couple of reloading manuals. Keep them in the bathroom. It's a great way to stay regular. -
If they do that what am I going to do for my second midlife crise?

Getting started in competitive shooting

[quote name='2Alpha' timestamp='1353288236' post='847883'] All three guns you listed are fine entry level guns for USPSA. I am not a Glock fan but a Glock 17 or G34 are also good choices. Nothing wrong with the Ruger SR9 if it fits you and you shoot it well. If you are considering shooting some IDPA, all the guns mentioned, EXCEPT the XDm, are legal in the SSP division, which is basically equivalent to USPSA Production. For IDPA, the XDm is legal in the ESP division, but not SSP. And yes, 9mm is the way to go. Cheaper ammo, encourages more practice. [/quote] I like Ruger firearms. But they don't have a very good double action triger. I have an Xd, xdm, and M&P. Of the three personally I prefer the M&P. They are a little easier on the pocket and I just shoot production better with it. -
Our pets are house pets. We go outside for a while 2 or 3 times a day. With King [the Shepard] Layla [our golden retriever] and Murphy [our overweight Yorke] our house if full enough. When I ask them if they want to go outside now, I end up trampled in the stampede to the door.

We stopped at the animal shelter in Madisonville about a year ago. Wife wanted a cat. We ended up with a 2 pound cat and a 87 pound [way under weight] black German Shepard. He was on his way to get put down when I spotted him. Best dog I ever had. He is over 110 pounds now [about where he belongs] and smart as a whip.

Getting started in competitive shooting
Ray Z replied to jwinter's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
[quote name='jwinter' timestamp='1353250494' post='847590'] I had a great time out at ORSA match this weekend. While I did not shoot, I did follow our group (started on stage 2 with Ray Z.) to all six stages and looks like it will be really fun. I suggest to anyone that might be interested in this type of shooting to go to one of these matches. I will most likely go to next the IDPA match and shoot if able. Thanks to all that gave me so much information on the forum and at the range. [/quote] Thanks jwinter. I hope you had a good time. The fat kid from the end of the block Ray -
[i]Poachers make it difficult for the rest of us that hunt. They slither onto someones property, take the game, then slither back away. My sons and I ask the owner and get written permission. I would make sure that my land was posted, then prosecute fully.[/i]

Hold on there bobba louie! Before you go to those extreems, try automobile cleaner wax. I never was able to get the stuff off the front of the cylinder but the stuff on the sides came off with good ol simonize and cloth towel.

Lost my mom and my sister to this damned disease. But treatment is much better now than it was then. If you love her, stand with her. She is going to go through some difficult times. There are a lot more happy endings to these stories now.

OK, now I'm confused. Does this thing have left hand threads?

I've got a Colt AR [6700] that I'm trying to get the flash suppressor off of. I've never been a hammer mechanic so I'm not putting a lot of twist on it. I've got a barrel wrench that I'm using and a 3/4" open end that I'm using on the flash hider. Is there something that I don't know or is this one of those cases of muscle over mind?

The smoke isn't really smoke. It's the lube coming off the bullet as it leaves the muzzle. If you think the lube that professional casters use is bad, try the NRA formula some time. On a clam day after shooting a practical pistol stage you can't find the targets.

reloading. neck sizing only. affect on groups?
Ray Z replied to vujade's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
+1 For what Dolomite said. If you're shooting off the bench it works. If you're shooting in the field or autoloading out of a magazine you are asking for trouble. -

Where do you buy your reloading supplies?
Ray Z replied to enfield's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Found the only deal at the gun show in Knoxville. Russian primers $109/5000. Boy! those guys like retail on their stuff. -
Is it Legal to Sale Personal reloaded ammo?
Ray Z replied to lshel's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Got to have the license. We can't forget Uncle Sam and Aunty Clinton. But all disgust aside, If I were to sell reloaded ammo, along with the proper licenses, I'd have to have a couple of million in liability insurance. With all that cost in the budget, you'd have to load millions of rounds a year to pay for overhead. -

Wow! I'm learning a lot. Any suggestions on gun/caliber? -
New shooter and I'm horrible at it. Looking for training.

Find a local gun club and get involved in practical pistol or IDPA. Great bunch of shooters and are willing to give you plenty of advice with your shooting. -
When we raised our boys we lived in one of the more affluent school districts in Ohio. We still had fees for this and fees for that sometimes twice a year. We always had school supplies to get. Didn't like it, but it was just part of school. Now they are grown and on their own. We still like to buy the school supplies for our grand-babies. It's our way of showing them that we support them. According to the local newspaper, Monroe county is one of the poorest county in Tennessee. Average family income is $21000/yr,. The schools spend $6020 on each student. Some of the supplies that are purchased go to those that can't afford $45 at the beginning of the year.

As I think about it, my USPSA production guns all have Lucite sights on them. My house guns are bare bones basic. Why? if the day ever comes when I have to use one to defend my family or myself, and it comes to court, I really don't want the prosecutor waving some high tech thing around with lasers and flashlights on it to the jury. Like TMF I really don't like killing the wildlife I have here. A couple of weeks ago we had a wild dog trying to get at the ducks in the lake. I put one over his head with the bold gun and he changed his mind. I could have dropped down a foot and put him down, but it wasn't necessary. I do my best hunting at the meat counter at the local wally world.

I'd like to hear what McMinn county does about this. They should have run the numbers, I'm sure the owner would like to have his gun back. How about keeping us up to date on this one?
