  1. I don't see cocking a hammer being any slower than clicking off a safety. Both can be done while presenting the gun.

reloading from a gate sure does suck though.

I wouldn't feel undergunned with a single action...but it's not gonna be my first choice for carry, that's for sure.

  2. I'd opt for 9mm instead of .40 anyway.

it's more pleasant in a smaller package with negligible difference in performance.

<----PM9 owner. Love it. I got mine before the CM9 came out otherwise I'd probably decided to save about 200 bucks.

  3. The STI Spartan is made by Armscor for them.

There's a few Turkish companies making 1911's as well. I THINK the Magnum Research 1911 is one of these.

The Iver Johnson pistols may be Turkish as well.

I love me some Rock Islands though. They're well built for the price and backed by fantastic customer service out of Nevada.

  4. For the price, it'd be hard to beat a 4" GP100 for a first revolver.

it'll do about anything you can ask of a pistol. It's on the list of guns I need to get. Smith 686 as well.

and of course, the MOdel 19 or 66.

My unicorn .357 is gonna be a 4" nickel Python though. Unless I somehow find a Korth Combat Magnum.

  5. I think I'm gonna to look at one of the Ka-bar TDI's now...anyone bother making their own sheaths for them?

I find kydex rubbing my butt to be a little bothersome :) I'm thinking a leather/kydex combo ALA a Crossbreed holster.

Man...I need to suggest that to Mark on the xdtalk boards...might be on to something.

  6. all I have is a 2000 special edition.

it had rubber sleeves that made it look "armored" I took them off as one had a tendency to slide loose in my pocket...

so it looks like a normal brushed stainless unless you look at the bottom and see the year stamped in it to know it's a collector lighter.

  7. You might try one of the non-serrated ones too; amazing what a conventional well honed blade will slice through. And easier to resharpen.

That's how I feel. I don't care for serrations due to the pain in the ass sharpening and a proper edge on a plain blade will cut through anything the serrations tear through anyway.

  8. I've always enjoyed Guns and Leather in Greenbriar. I need to buy more from them. The staff has always been friendly, never pushy and don't try to be armchair commandos. Their prices have usually been the lowest in the area from what I've seen as well.

  9. The 66 is a fine pistol but one thing to watch out for is they don't like a steady diet of .357 Mag that the 686 can handle.

the K frames are some of the best all purpose revolvers built BUT, like the model 29, just don't live long on a steady diet of magnum ammo.

I'd say keep the 686 and buy the 66 out right but check things like the forcing cone and cylinder gap clearance as well as making sure it still locks up strong.

That said, I'd love to have a 2.5" 66. Fantastic guns. If you get it, I'd advise feeding it .38 Special for the most part.

  10. I need the serations to cut plastic tie wraps on crates along with rope, canvas, rubber and tons of other crap.....I'll fiddle with it when I get it and get it working right.

You need a nice utility knife as well as a good folder :)

That ####'s rough on a blade! if you're gonna use a blade on them, make it disposable ;)

  11. I've heard they're fabulous rifles for the money.

If I'm thinking right, it was one of the first "budget deer rifles" that shot substantially better than the other's before it...god, what was that remington that felt like it had gravel in the action? 710? 770?

Right now seems to be the best time ever to buy a very nice, very accurate hunting rifle for 400 or less. The Ruger American looks very appealing too, as is the Savage Axis.

    Sooooo many good choices.

Also, thread is useless without pics!

  12. eh, 629 is a stainless steel gun. They're solid.

BUT a 6" N Frame is not worth a damn for concealed carry unless you wear one hell of a purse.

I love the 29's but one thing to remember is that it needs more Special shot through it than magnums. Much like the K frame .357's, the frame was never really meant to for the magnum loads. Lots of heavy loads through them will greatly shorten the life.

If you want a .44 Magnum for shooting mostly magnum, I'd suggest a Ruger Super Redhawk or Super Blackhawk. They'll handle the abuse a lot better.

But yeah, it's still very hard to beat the Model 29 for the perfect handgun role. A 4" gun will do anything you should reasonably ask of a handgun and do it well.

  13. I love love love my Kershaw Blur.

I carry a plain edge drop point of the sandvik steel variety.

It's easy to keep a hair shaving edge on it and can be had for under 60.

It's an assisted opener that when you get accustom to, is faster than most autos (it has no safety on it too!)
