I once wondered pretty much the same thing, then I watched the videos of CCI's process for making 22lr. The equipment involved is much larger and more expensive than machines like the ones typically used for mass production of centerfire ammo, unlike centerfire ammo 22lr production is caliber-specific, and there was a shocking amount of hand labor involved in the production process. It's long been known that profit margins were very low in rimfire ammunition production, after watching those videos I was amazed that 22lr ever sold as cheaply as what we came to believe as "normal". It's easy for me to understand why manufacturers are reluctant to build the new factories and purchase the new equipment required to ramp up production, raising prices is probably a lot better option for their bottom lines, which is after all the primary function of ammunition production ...

As for the lengths, trailer axles tend to be sold in the most common lengths, trailers that need shorter axles are often made by cutting and welding the axle tubes to length. As for repairing yours, like the others said, look for welding and fabrication shops, trailer repair is a standard service in that type of shop.

Yes and no. As I read it's history, selective service (or the draft) has been in almost constant implementation since WWI, however Congress has passed numerous laws regarding how it is administered. At various times, the old requirements were replaced by updated regulations, including the 1975 version which abolished the registration requirement, due to the move to an all-volunteer force. In 1980, a new law was passed, which retroactively required all males 18 or older who were born on or after Jan. 1, 1960 to register. With minor modifications, this is the law we are under today, thus the law which required your registration is not the same one that's in effect today. As an aside, due to the changing laws, since 1917 the only men who were completely exempted form some sort of selective service registration were those born between March 29, 1957 and Dec. 31, 1959 ...

Both Remington and another company called New England Westinghouse were both contracted to produce about 3.3 million Mosin M91's for the imperial Russian government during WWI. During the production run, the Russian Revolution occurred, and the Karensky government subsequently defaulted on the contracts. Approximately 1.5 million or so had already been shipped to Russia, several hundred thousand more were waiting shipment, and additional rifles were in the production lines or stockpiled at the factories. Both Remington and NEW were facing bankruptcy because of the default, the US government stepped in and bought up all the unshipped rifles and even had the factories produce more, many of which were issued to reserve troops and units of the national guard. Both the US surcharged rifles and those which were purchased but never entered into Army stockpiles were later sold by the forerunner of the CMP to US citizens in the 20's, at a loss of about 90% of the original purchase price. Others were bought by companies like Bannerman's of New York, then sold both here and abroad (some were even rechambered to 30-06). Rifles that made it to Russia were confiscated by Finland after the Finns declared their independence from Russia, several were also sent to Spain during the Spanish Civil War of the 30's. Others wound up in various Balkan countries, and a large number were captured by the Germans and Austrians during the war, quite a few of those eventually were sold to Finland, as that country adopted the Mosin rifle as the basis of their firearms through WWII. It's uncommon (though not unheard of) for a Remington or NEW barrel to be shortened to 91/30 lengths, and converted to those specifications. It's much more likely that your friend's rifle is still in it's original M91 form, a lot of people who are relatively unfamilair with Mosins in general will often confuse those two variants. Either way, $150 for any Remington Mosin rifle would be considered a bargain today.

In the early 60's, the spot price for silver was nearing the point where the silver in US coins was soon going to be worth more than the face value of the coin. This tends to drive the coins out of circulation, the end result was the switch after 1965 to the use of base metals in coins. During that time, many people quickly put away vast amounts of the older silver coins then in circulation, I read once where basically all of them were out of general circulation within 2 years of the changeover. It's quite possible that your dad's stash is leftover from that time frame ...

Does this mean they hand you a fifth to drink while making the tour? -
Most of the ones listed on ebay and such are the Chinese knockoffs, they don't have a particularly good reputation. Hold out for authentic Russian strippers would be my advice ... ... no pun intended of course.
