  1. This topic reminds me of similar discussions on aircraft oil. Get a group of GA pilots together and mention "oil" and they'll talk/argue the relative merits of their particular choice for hours on end. Interestingly, although it doesn't apply to automotive oils, probably the most exhaustive independent study ever done on aircraft engine oils concluded that "oil is oil" when it comes to engine longevity, adding that, for airplanes, the single best factor in determining engine longevity was how often the planes are flown ...
  2. M91's are probably my favorite variant, at least I think I have more of them than any other. The oldest is an 1895 Tula, which came packaged with an Austrian made bayonet (kind of rare). The US made M91's are cool as well, albeit I only own one, a New England Westinghouse that came back here via Finland ...

  4. The M44 is one of the shorter Mosin variants. If you want long, find an original M91 with bayonet ...

  7. It's always nice if the seller posts the conditions, but not necessary. If the seller asks for public notices, I'll give them, otherwise i typically go with a PM. As others have stated, I prefer purchases to remain between myself and the seller ...

  10. Gender reveals are getting a little silly..... Nope, they've been extraordinarily silly since the beginning. The whole concept is stupid, similar to Twitter and other such foolishness. It's the height of conceit to imagine anyone else cares ...
  11. Moved into my house in 1991. At the time, it had a relatively new range, oven and dishwasher, Magic Chef brand (no idea who makes/made these). They're all still there, although one of the range potentiometers is out and another is kind of flaky now ...

  14. True. I suspect taking on a new house, paid for or not, right before a divorce is not a good move for either your stress levels or finances ...
  15. That might be a factor, but if you're like me you were a teenager or young adult in the 70's, a time in every man's life when he will eat practically anything and think it's good ...
  16. Once you've replaced all the floorpans, quarterpanels, rockers, cowl and the other areas where they used thin sheet steel with no primer or other corrosion protection. The cars of this era were typically designed to last about 3-5 years before being scrapped, which most were. I've restored, driven and owned a lot of them, and while there are some advantages in terms of their simplicity, quality construction for longevity was not one ...
  17. Back during the Great Pmag Scare of 2012-2013, Brownell's was running a special on 10 packs of Pmags when it all flared up. Coincidentally, I had just placed 40 of them in my shopping cart when it all blew up. My order went rhough, but of course they were out of stock. My order, along with apparently everybody in the US, was listed as "backordered". Every few months, I got an email asking if I wanted to cancel or stay on the waiting list. As I was out no money, the price was still pre-panic, and Pmags were selling at 10x what I ordered them for, I waited. About 6 months later, I got notified my mags were shipping, and a few days later received a box with 40 Pamgs. Sometimes, patience is a virtue ...
  18. Many years ago, a good friend on mine worked in QC at a company that manufactured commercial grade heat exchangers, cooling coils, pumps and the like. His company was negotiating a contract with Sears to make portable air compressors, the type used by small shops and homeowners. It would have been a much larger contract than they typically serviced, so management was keen to get it done. Their original prototypes were submitted for longevity testing, the Sears engineers opened the draincocks and turned on the compressors, measuring how long they ran wide open. After 2k hour, they gave up and told my friend that their compressors lasted way too long for their needs. My friend's company cheapened up the pumps, motors and assorted hardware, and tried again. Same test, this time the compressors ran for about 1k hours on average. At that time Sears pulled the plug, told them they would never buy a compressor that ran over 500 hours during this test. The company never made Sears air compressors ...

  22. I would guess that both Covid and tariffs are partly responsible for this shortage. China is the world's largest producer of tungsten, and Russia that of titanium, both of which are widely used in the carbide tool industry and neither country is on the best of terms with the US now. In addition, carbide is essential to the manufacturer of silicon wafers for microprocessors and "chips", the worldwide shortage of these components has probably contributed to a carbide shortage as well. All this is likely to get worse before it gets better ...
  23. I doubt there's any bill, pending or otherwise, that allow one to wave a gun at a bus load of kids, even when standing on your own property. She's about to be a perfect example of the "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" maxim ...
