i see and hear alot of people talk about carrying a blade for self defense. Those who carry a pistol for self defense will spend hours practicing their draw and shooting, as well as taking classes to better their chances in just such an encounter. Can you say the same for a blade? Blade skills need to be developed just like firearm and unarmed skills do. So no matter what style or method use choose, make sure to mentally and physically prepare yourself for the encounter we all hope never comes. that said, i found this article on another website, and thought I would share as its really well written KNIFE DEFENSE MYTH By Carl Cestari Instead of talking about alot of bull#### concerning so-called unarmed "knife" defenses, let's reverse roles for a moment. Let us assume the "role" of the attacker, instead of the "defender". First, let's consider the "choice" of weapon. A knife or any edged weapon is an "up close and personal" tool of ferocious and brutal mayhem. You have to close with your mark and physically, violently and with extreme prejudice stab, slash, and hack him to bits. It's not like a gun, which could have an element of detachment. No, a knife is about as personal, brutal and ruthless as it gets. So what kind of "mind-set" does this entail? You are going close with your target hard and fast, using deception, surprise or simply a committed and brutal pouncing. You are going to be determined, ruthless, brutal, ferocious, vicious, and most probably filled with hate and rage. You are going to seize the target with abject brutality and stab, slash, hack and eviscerate with totally committed rage, ferocity and hate. OVER and OVER and OVER. NOTHING is going to stand in your way. NOTHING! You are going to DESTROY whatever DOES attempt to thwart your murderous assault. You will attack repeatedly with ALL the strength, speed, and brutality you are capable of. And THAT will be heightened even MORE by rage and adrenalin. You KNOW that you MUST get this over with QUICKLY. Your attack will be a frenzy of hate, rage and murderous INTENT. You WON'T "feint" with your blade, you WON'T "spar" with your blade, you WON'T "half-step" with your blade. You WILL attack with brutal and ruthless rage. You WILL punch, kick, bite, gouge, butt, and do ANY and EVERYTHING that will accomplish you GOAL in as ferocious a manner as Inhumanly possible. Unless YOU are killed outright, NO injury will dissuade you from KILLING your mark. In FACT, anything LESS than your death, will ONLY add MORE FUEL to YOUR FIRE. NOTHING, short of your immediate demise CAN stop you. Rage, hate, murderous intent and adrenalin are fueling you to an almost superhuman state of FRENZY and FEROCITY! Even when your man goes down, and DOWN you are determined to put him, YOU still continue the assault. You stab and stab and stab. You kick and stomp OVER and OVER and OVER again. You DON'T even begin to "disengage" until your "blood" lust has been quenched, and your mark taken off the count. THAT is what REALLY happens when one human being uses a knife on another. Face that FACT squarely. Too many are "playing" knife gymnastics without EVER even realizing what the street has in store for them. It ain't going to be pretty! Are you REALLY preparing to DEAL with THAT? Or are you kidding yourself and others? REALITY sucks, as they say. But it is what it is! Carl Cestari

Your neighbor runs his mower all the time? Drive some rebar in the yard at the right height and it'll destroy his mower. See how that works. How about we leave each other alone one their own property. HOA's do a lot. They make stupid rules, charge ridiculous fees, and generally are run by power tripping little jerkoffs who are way more interested in your grass being 1/2" to high than actually helping the neighborhood. You can come drive through my non-HOA controlled neighborhood anytime Robetnashville. All the lawns are cut, the fields are growing in fresh hay, and not one single fuck is given about what your neighbor is doing. We all mind our own business, and do as we please.

Dude my note 2 doesn't understand a word on voice text. Not to mention I still use a lot of backwoods slang that doesn't come through when I type so it has major issues with my speech and grammar when I try voice text. sent from the backwoods

How is it your right to break the laws/rules you agreed to live under? No rights, including the right to own property or the right to bear arms, exist in a vacuum...as soon as exercising a right infringes on the rights of another then the state has an duty to seek an accommodation...in this case, the accommodation are ordinances about how a person is supposed to care for his yard. If these rules are written into the deed for the property then the property owner has even less of an excuse for not following them and no reason to cry about it when their refusal to follow the rules catches up with them You notice I said I won't live under an HOA or any other body or organization that wants to tell me what I can and can't do with MY land. If your dumb enough to live somewhere the governs how long your grass can be or which way your garage faces then thats your own fault. But its still not something a police officer should be serving a warrant for. Don't they have more important shit to do? Not to mention the fact that they acted like complete assholes. A lil common courtesy and a polite attitude goes a long ways. sent from the backwoods

Not sure I would have admitted to wearing panties on an open forum lol. The improv thing is good, but they say briefs are horrible for the boys because of lack of air and heat build up. Those would have to be worse. Btw you can by mens synthetics that are specially made for support and will perform as good or better than the others. Any reasons not to guy with guys specifics underwear? sent from the backwoods

Actually ownership means just that. If I own 10k acres and wanna plant it all in posion ivy and kudzu then its my right. Thats why I will never live anywhere with an HOA or anyone else who tells me what I can and ca 't do with my land. I guess having the desire to tell those people to go do an impossible act to themselves comes from growing up way out in the country were we were the onlynones wh9 had a say on our land. sent from the backwoods

Yeah I'm done with it for awhile. Its beautiful, but its hard on all my equipment. The belt sander hates it as does the bandsaw. You can tell its hard when even the big saws labor cutting it. sent from the backwoods

Thanks man, I really like that blade. I wanted something lean and mean with a classy feel to it. Almost a gentlemans fighting knife. And yeah the prybar is an idea I've wanted to do for years and finally decided to make one. sent from the backwoods

I tend to laugh at people who say they'd last very long during a teotwaki situation; but after seeing the awesomeness that you post pictures of from time to time, I can say I believe that what ever team has you in it will stand a fighting chance if shtf. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 4 Beta I don't know how long I'll survive the end of the world, but I do my best to be as self reliant as possible. My main goal is to live in a cabin on the mountain and LIVE for a living. Do a little forge work for side money, hunt, fish, raise live stock and a big garden for food and be in a postion to not even notice if the grid goes down or the stock market crashes sent from the backwoods

I built this out of a W1 nicholson file today. 8.5" traditional tanto tipped blade, 4.5" handle with tong oiled purple heart. Handle is held on with epoxy and copper pins. Flat grind and will shave hair now. And I made a small prybar for my get home bag that may end up as an edc item with a custom kydex sheath. Its built from a harrow spike, about 1080 steel. Tempered for toughness and to give it some spring so it can be hammered on without mercy. Head it 1.5 inch wide with a blunt chiesel tip. The spike on the back is designed to bust auto glass. Its 9.5" tip to tip. sent from the backwoods

Do yourself a favor and buy a rip chain. Standard chains suck for ripping. If you can find the manual I'd look up the chain size. Go to Baileys logging supply, they carry everything for saws you can imagine. We use oregon chains if I remeber right, but I'll ask my old man today to make sure. sent from the backwoods

The local dollar general has them also for about $3.50 each. I bought 4 or 5 awhile back. They don't do well if you extinguish then relight but they are great for a pot of coffee and some hot food on the trail with no mess to clean up. Sent from the backwoods of Nowhere

This is all I can think of when that moron comes on television. I tried to watch an episode once. I'd rather have bamboo shoots crammed under my fingernails while being skinned alive and having my teeth pulled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YKb-B4l-OM&feature=youtube_gdata_player Sent from the backwoods of Nowhere

Contact is more of a study guide. Be aware it is very technical and can be dry. It has tons of good info but its not one of those things Id be reading at 300 am becauze I had to finish it. I read and study about 1 hour a night on stuff when we don't have company. Whether its primitive survival, blacksmithing or tactics or something else. So I use it as a study guide during that to supplement and refresh what I learned in the Corps. While I enjoyed all 3 of the Enemies triolgy I agree it was dry and fhe author seemed confused. It seemed he would make a big deal about this person or that, then they would fade into the background of the storyline and play no significant role. His second and third books are much better. I enjoyed the 3rd the most of those 3. Sent from the backwoods of Nowhere

Its a good book isn't it. You should read Contact: a tactical manual by the same author. I've read the first two of "Holding their own" series this week. Bought #1 monday, finished it and bought number #2 tuesday. Just ordered number 3 today. Great series and the man and women interact like me and my wife which makes it a better read also. Thats a good idea caster, never thought of that. You hit the nail on the head about doing it all yourself. I make, build, and do everything possible myself. I figure the more I learn the more I will know in a bad spot and the more money I save. So far I'm a blacksmith, farmer, I can do carpentry, lay block and brick, I'm an ASE mechanic, wood worker, hunter, helicopter mechanic and air crew and a Marine. I"ve never balieved in paying someone else to do something I can do myself, and I don't buy anything I can make. Sent from the backwoods of Nowhere
