I know we see stupid stuff almost everyday. If you see something that catches your eye post it up so we all get a laugh. I followed this genius to work today. I got behind him on clinton highway, and his kitchen garabage was hung from the rear wiper. I understand not wanting trash in a car, but this is just dumb. About 5 min after this picture the bag popped loose..... at 60 mph and me behind him, in traffic, in the rain. It instantly busted, and I had to slam the brakes and cut to try and avoid the majority of it. I think this guy deserves a darwin award, since he never stopped or even slowed down. Idiot....

Cedar and redwood are both termite resistant. I don't know about anything else. I'm sure there is a way to patch a wall together, I haven't seen it done, but my Dad probably knows how. If you want to pm me a list of questions I can give him a call and get them answered for ya. Mixed species logs are fine, some of our sheds are mixed species. It took 6 years to build my sisters, but your talking a modern home with all conveniences. A liveable 2-3 room cabin would be a 2 month project if you worked on it most weekends, and had a decent idea what your doing. If you want the logs flat on both sides, the old way would be to take a foot aze and hew the logs out. The modern way is to take a big chainsaw like our 3120 Husky and one of those portable chainsaw, saw mills and saw them flat. Thats what we did with my sisters house, and there are some very large logs in that one. This is our blacksmith shop, but I wouldn't hesitate to turn it into a one room trappers cabin in a pinch. It could be built quickly, with smaller logs, and very little financial input. This is a storage cabin Most cabins in east wood have been done with wooden pegs, but a lot interior stuff did use hand forged nails. With a nail bar, good steel rod, and a smith who has a lot of practice you can make and head a nail in one heat, so about 3 minutes per nail. Also Ive seen some leather hinges, but I've seen plenty of hand forged hinges. I've also made a lot of period correct hand forged hinges and door latches, like the ones in my sisters house. Like I said earlier, if you can make it up this fall to the TGO rendezvous you'll see this stuff first hand, and my dad is a wealth of knowledge.

My dad built the log house I grew up in. 1500 sq feet, all done by hand. We built my sisters house, its all done by hand with materials from our land. Including doors and cabinets. $18k for a 2000+ sq foot house with central heat and air, etc etc. We've built several smaller ones for storage, etc. You can see them and siscuss the finer points at the get together this fall at my parents place. The thread is in the events section. Will post pics of the smaller, more primtive ones tommorow.

Are you sure on those number of people per square ft? That would work out to 10+ people per acre even on a vegan diet. 15 if supplemented. Our current garden is well maintained and grown with the knowledge and care of 150+ yrs of East TN farming tradition on home land, and if it was less than the three acres we have now we wouldn't be completely self sufficient on food. We have 8 adults and four kids, and from our experince Id say 4-5 people an acre is gonna be more realistic if your knowledgeable, and do alot of canning with rabbits, chickens, hogs, cows, and wild game to supplement. A person just starting out would be lucky to support more than one or two people per acre without prior knowledge and setup.

I'm am a carrying person, and would give the shirt off my back to someone in need. Now if mine or my familys survival was at stake I would turn people away, and if needed, kill without consiensce if need be to help my family survive. We have 8 adults and 4 kids in our group everyone has grown up farming, hunting, raising live stock, etc. We have 40 acres under fence with limited access where our houses are, plu another 120 acres of well taken care of fenced property less than a mile away, also limited access gated and fenced, with manual wells buckets, springs, and natural as well as family grown food aources. I gotta a good feeling we can survive without anyone elses help.

I'm a blacksmith, farmer, fabricator, and have military experince. My dad is also a smith, farmer, logger, and farm raised man who knows alot about everything, or so it seems. Weather grow a large 3 acre garden using draft animals, not tractors. We have land to support more livestock than our current 4 or 5 head of cattle, plus we could triple our garden and output very easily. We don't stock pile, my family has been and would be self sufficent without any outside help what so ever. We have forty acres of good land that is easily defended by the 4 grown men in my family Oh and to anyone who plans to "bug out" to the mountains. As Ive told countless other preppers. Remeber those mountains are already occupied, and we have one of the most clanish cultures in the world in Appalachia. Strangers will not be welcomed, so make sure to plan for a spefic area, either unoccipyed or owned.

For sure. Alot of my knowledge is stuff I learned in the Marines. And Ill be carrying my old bolt action .22 and military sleeping bag. I don't have a bug out bag, Ill be bugging in on my land if it hits the fan, but Ill bring my normal woods gear.
