Sandman you were a true joy to teach. I actually had three people come up this weekend. Broomhead and his father came up for the third time on sat. We worked on several things, including a hawk from a brick hammer, a kiridashi from a file, a blank for a kukri blade, a letter opener set for Broomhead Sr's better half, , a coat hanger for his office, and a horseshoe hook for his granddaughter. We worked all day, starting at about 815, and getting done around 430. As always they were great fun to have come out, they worked hard, got a lot done, and always bring some great ideas to the table. Very cool. As far as personal protective equipment man kind has survived without for years. I still forge without safety glasses, and I just accept the risk. Gotta get the job done somehow.

I very, very rarely get a telemarketer calling my cell number. I had the same number for 6 years, and its been posted online, on applications, and several other places, and I only get one call about every 6 months. They seem to focus on land lines more than cells with telemarketing calls. The only calls I get on my cell are friends and family, and the occasional business I have given it to that has permission to call me.

Second vote for cell phone only. Me and my wife haven't had a house phone in years. Only time its not an option is if you live in an area like my parents place where there is almost no reception.

AR500 is very hard and abrasion resistant. Its used for super heavy duty stuff, like dump truck beds. That said 5160 quenched in oil at non-magnetic will be hard as a rock, but it may shatter if you get it that hard. You could temper it back some and still have 55-62 RC hardness and it'd probably take almost as much as AR500. Just a fyi you could go to a junkyard and buy a pack of truck springs, and those will be anywhere from 2-4' long or longer, 3/8" thick or more, and 50-55 rc hardness. And you can probably get an old pack for $20 which can include 5-7 indivdual springs.

But there are always safer jobs. Nobody makes you become a police officer, just like nobody made me sign up for the USMC. I support my local LEO's, and appreciate what they do. But at the end of the day, you are still a civil servant that works for the citizens, not above them.

I can't stand the man. His abrasive, cocky attitude rubs me the wrong way, and is the exact opposite of what I expect from a professional. Coward or not, hes still a pot stirring ass with an attitude problem.

That said, it still irrates me when an LEO feels the need to disarm someone who has done no wrong, and openly provided information about having a weapon and its whereabouts.

Ok let me rephrase. I do understand that its illegal to carry a handgun, with the hcp being the defense. That said, I still see no reason for disarming a law abiding citzen. I've met some damn fine officers, but I've meet some damn fine idiots who I wouldn't trust with a slingshot. I will admit to not being as studied up on the subject as I should be, but I will leave off with this. As I said before, the man who is gonna shoot you at a traffic stop isn't gonna show you his hcp, and let you take his weapon. So the officer can give himself a false sense of security all day. And just because its legal, doesn't make it right.

Sounds like he was professinal. That said, he has no reason, nor right to disarm anyone who is in legal possession of a handgun with an HCP. If he conducted a search due to probable cause, and you didn't have an HCP then yes. He is a public servant, not an overlord or sheepdog. Sorry for the rant, it just gets on my nerves that any police officer thinks hes safer by disarming the man who openly discloses that he has a weapon and an hcp. The guy whos gonna shoot him at a trarfic stop isn't gonna tell him he has the gun beforehand.

[/quote] A striker has to be well versed in smithing. He needs to be able to follow the smiths rhythm, land accurate blows, and swing a big hammer. The smith has to turn the steel at the correct times, and not in the middle of the strikers swing along with trusti.g the striker not to break the anvil or hit him.

For a urban or suburban area nothing beats gas. But I love the smell of coal coking out, the old school feel, just connecting to the old ways. And yes i know charcoal is even older, but coal is so predominate in this area, and has been for years that its part of the experince for me

My normal hammer is a 4 lb crosspein, or a 6 lb sledge, and while I have no issues with a small useable face, Ive never seen anyone use an anvil that is as small as, or smaller than the face, as it usually becomes a bottom fuller and leaves some fun lil dents and ripples. Just went down and did some looking, and while my big track is slightly bigger than the face of my 6 lb hammer, its just barely, and I have no idea how you would straighten and flatten out a blade like my normal bowies. Though I do understand having that amount of metal under the hammer to work better, I think I'll stick with making a "london pattern" style anvil like the smaller track, as I am used to having a normal horn and stuff, and prefer that style. I have seen several post anvils with a 3x3 or 4x4 face, about 16" long or longer, and they seem to work good, but there doesn't seem to be enough surface on track. Anyways some pics to go with this post, and I will definitely keep your idea in mind.
