I have not had Pappy, but I have had its sister recipe, Rip Van Winkle, which is ~105 proof I think. It was really good, but not 8 times better than Baker's, which is about the same proof. I couldn't pay that much for a bourbon when Maker's Mark is so good, and such a bargain.

I have waffled on switching to an aluminum lower for my SCAR--that will allow use of PMAGs rather than the proprietary SCAR mags by FN--for a couple of years. There are a few SCAR specific mags on the market now that are an alternative to the FN pieces, but they have had generally poor reviews. I have never really gone wanting for the FN mags for mine. I actually bought 5 back when they were hard to find before I even had the rifle. But they are expensive at around $40 each, and they are still harder to find than PMAGS. I had pretty well decided not to switch to this style lower, but the recent acquisition of an AR-308 combined with the new 25 round PMAGs in 308 finally pushed me to get one. Having commonality of magazines between the SCAR and AR-308 is a strong lure. There are two lowers on the market currently, one by Handl and one by Cavalry Manufacturing. There is also one in the works by Stryker Enterprises that looks amazing, but it has been in the works for more than two years, and in spite of constant teases and promises has yet to see the light of day. If they ever hit the market, I may consider one. It is the subject of considerable conjecture and cause of constant angst on the FN boards. The Handl is a really nice looking piece, but it has received a lot of mixed reviews. I decided on going with the Cavalry unit. It is not fancy and shares the same sculpting as the plastic factory lower, except that it will accept PMAGs, obviously, so it is a bit wider than the OEM unit, and the trigger guard is opened up. It will also accept AR-15 grips, where the OEM lower will not without some modification to either the grip or lower. The lower is slightly heavier than the plastic OEM version, but PMAGS are lighter than the steel factory mags, so it's basically a wash. The more mags you carry, the more it favors the PMAG compatible lower. Anyway, it came yesterday and I got it installed. I thought I would post up some pics in case any of the SCAR guys on the board have been curious. The finish is smooth and even and there are no sharp edges. The fit with the factory parts is perfect. It was very easy moving the factory components from the OEM lower into the new unit. PMAGS drop free with no issues and the bolt catch works as it should. This discoloration on the lower in my pics is just excess oil from the trigger install. My only gripe is that because the lower is a little wider than stock to accommodate the wider PMAG, there is extra width at the top of the gip. You can see it in the second pic below at just above the magpul branding on the Grip. It doesn't really cause any problem, and it exists on the factory lower too (just a little less), but I wish it were flush with the grip. Yes, the gun has green krylon on it. I have not fired it yet because it is 9 degrees today, but I have hand-cycled several rounds through it with no issue. The reviews I have read state 100% reliability, so I am not too worried about it.

I haven't been there since they started selling guns, but if their gun prices are anything like their knife prices...well, I don't see how they would sell anything with Bud's being next door.

I bet you had a smile. My very first shot was about 30 yards at a pop can. POP! Grins all around.

Ukraine might have been nuked, video inside.

I believe the flash would have been brighter if it were a nuke. They say, if you ever notice a second sun in the sky, don't look at it. From what I understand a nuke flash, even a little one, is as bright as the sun. That looked like a fireball. -
Amen Red. Even if the rich didn't hide theirs, it would make no difference for you and me because the government would do absolutely nothing different. They would just spend more on social programs. They would still print at the same rate because they consider that a legitimate form of income as a "taxing alternative". In reality printing is a tax increase too. If you had the only dollar in the world and the Fed decided to print another one for themselves, they have just taken half of your dollar's value that they can now spend. If the government had more money it would grow as large as it could until even the "newly found" proceeds weren't enough to sustain it. All a government does is eat. It eats what the makers make, so it can leave shit behind for the takers to take. The sooner our government is starved the better, and the less painful it will be.

HK hired an ad agency who didn't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Since then, HK has made several references to it in a self-deprecating fashion.

This would be a boon to TN Gun Dealers who lose sales on high dollar guns to internet sales. At least I believe so.

Just out of curiosity, what are your suspicions? -
It was worth watching, but they really took a LOT of creative license. Gage, for instance, wasn't regarded as a total shit...and wasn't even at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was actually fairly sympathetic of the colonials. They went too far in trying to "modernize" the dialog. I don't think Ben Franklin would have called Prime Minister North, "Bro". They also give Sam Adams WAY too much representation in the Continental Congress than he deserved. There will be a lot of people who watch this and take it for Gospel. My biggest gripe is that they really made Farmer Dickerson of Pennsylvania out to be a smug and prissie ass at the Cont. Congress. That man was amazing, and humble. He opposed the declaration due to his Quaker beliefs and the desire to avoid war at all costs, but when the die was cast, he served proudly in the Pennsylvania Militia during the war. My other peeve is that they showed the Declaration being voted on July 4th, rather than July 2nd. John Adams on HBO was much better written and acted, and was really superb. It portrayed Dickenson VERY well. It took creative license too...they made Adams' relationship with his son Charlie out to be caustic when there is no evidence to support that. They also kill Charlie off at a young age, when in fact he lived to be much older than the series indicated. I majored in History, so that kind of stuff bothers me. None of it was harmful, but there are plenty of other shows/movies that are made that really are dangerous. There are kids out there that believe Lincoln was a vampire hunter for Pete's' sake.

Looks to me like he is playing the role of hostage taker in a simulation...using Barney as cover. No point in putting the revolver to the hostage's head if no one cares about the hostage.

What movie would you like to see made and Made well?

Starship Troopers...the book, not that 90's movie horse shit. -
American Rifleman had an article in the two years or so about the Army moving away from the 338 round. They have been playing with a 220 Grain 300 Win Mag load that is somewhere around 2800 FPS at the muzzle. Anyway, they say that though it starts out with a lot less energy than the standard 338 round (I don't know the weight) by the time they are around 1500 yards the 300 and 338 are within 25lb-ft of energy each other, I believe. Here is the article: http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2013/9/12/advances-in-us-sniping-ammunition-from-vietnam-to-afghanistan/ The 338 is awesome, but I am really impressed that the 300 Win Mag can be that great. 220 is a heavy bullet for a 300 with that short neck.

I really like it...but giving up 15 rounds in a G20 seems like too much of a stretch to trade my glock in for one. We need a HK VP10!

Oh, the Termi. What a car. I had an 04 back when they were new. It was my daily driver for 6 years. I was running a Kennebell at 23lbs with a hair over 700HP at the wheels. A 700RWHP daily Driver. And no one really knew about the Terminators. Many a Viper, Vette, Camaro, you name it...rolled up and were stunned. Here she was out on The Dragon about 10 years ago. I'm all misty! And I agree the New GT is the best looking supercar I have ever seen.

Off topic, but also the reason noises are so much louder at night. Cooler, denser air. An acorn falls in the woods at night and scares the shit out of you when your camping. You never even hear it during the daytime. -

I have had mine fail to cycle with a booster-less can on with some light loads. With the booster it ran fine. Having said that, with quality ammo, it is never failed to cycle without a booster. I just figure with one, you can run whatever you like. -

HK USP 45 Is awfully quiet with a YHM Cobra M2 can. I have GEMTECH clone 9mm can that I run on my HK VP9 and Beretta 92 that with 147 FMJ's are quiet. A Beretta 92 can be made to cycle without a booster, which is neat. But with a booster it is exceptionally reliable, so why chance it? I have a Remmy 700 AAC SD in 300 BLK that just clicks with a good suppressor, but I'd still rather shoot a semi. -
There is a tendency among us to think of dog ownership and gun ownership in these cases to be comparable things. The difference is that guns cannot simply "get a mind" to kill someone unless someone interacts with them. If there were to be invented a robotic gun that--at times, free from any user input, just jumped up and blew an innocent person away, I don't think there would be any of us arguing that 99% of the time robot guns are fine. I truly respect those of you who raise pit-bulls to be gentle animals, however I believe you could work equal miracles with much less aggressive and dangerous breeds. If pit-bulls cannot be gassed into extinction, at the very least, they should be governed as other dangerous animals are when it comes to ownership as pets. I would be equally leery of someone who insisted on keeping lions and tigers as pets. I love lions and tigers, but they belong behind bars when not in the wild, and certainly not in living-rooms. One last point, I keep reading the statement, "I wouldn't leave children around them". This was an adult that was killed. House cats can asphyxiate babies while snuggling up them. Don't leave your babies alone with any animal that can make physical contact with them. This was an adult that was killed by a monster, which was trusted--as was the case in so many of these cases.

Do you use a quick detach optic mount?
atlas3025 replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I have had several PEPR's, and they are great mounts as far as I can tell, though I have never tested the return to zero with them. My only real gripe with them is how heavy they are. -
I thought is was good. Frankly it was worth it for Tricia Helfer's ass alone. It left a lot hanging, so I am thinking they will do a series. The mini-series start reminds me of the Battlestar series, which was phenomenal.

I have had good luck with American Defense on a 10 power scope. A Larue on an EOTech, and a Bobro on an ACOG. Those are the only combos I have tried.
